NBC Universal Planning Up to 9 Different Streaming Services Monday Jan 11 2016 07:32 EDT In addition to the "Seeso" comedy-themed streaming service Comcast NBC Universal launched last week, NBC is considering launching nine other streaming video services, all specifically catering to one particular theme. NBC has yet to decide what the exact themes will be, but NBC Universal VP of digital enterprises explains the push into $4 per service streaming video like this: quote: We feel like we’re providing the curated, niche experience that cable provided in the 1980s with the huge advantage of having watched the last 30 years take place. We can go right to original programming knowing that it’s the ultimate destination for any successful new channel. We knew going into it that the market demands original, exclusive programming, so we are getting ahead of that.
The problem is that NBC Universal is owned by Comcast, and generally speaking, streaming services owned by incumbent, legacy TV companies go out of their way to avoid being too compelling and disruptive. Still, a catalog of different streaming options can only provide more choice, even though it's unclear just how many monthly subscriptions broadcasters think the average consumer (or cord cutter) can afford. |

I'm guessingThat they are trying to make it so complicated to watch what you want to that just getting cable will be the easy way. | |

Themes or 'Channels'Yes, comcrap OWNS about 40 'channels'. Does this mean they are offering different 'channels', or just 'shows'. Now, to me $6.00 for CBS alone is a total ripoff. However, $2.00 a 'channel' would be tolerable, or $4.00 for 4-5 channels would be a sweet spot. I WOULD be willing to pay $4.00 for a package of 5 channels, ESPECIALLY if I had access to their back catalog. I'd pay for one of the local NBC channels, SyFy, USA Network, MSNBC for $4.00 a month. I would NOT pay for any of the sports channels, spanish channels, weather channel, murder porn channels, BET, etc, etc). Having said that, the bean counters are SURE to realize what 'most' people would want, and would therefore separate local/SyFy/USA/MSNBC into different 'streams', so you would AGAIN end up paying $20.00 for the 4-5 channels you DO want to watch. I'll pass until I see what they actually offer. | | spewakR.I.P Dadkins Premium Member join:2001-08-07 Elk Grove, CA
