NETGEAR's 802.11g products
(old news - 03:23PM Sunday Feb 02 2003)
80211gnews.com reports that Netgear is readying its own set of 802.11g products. Netgear's complete 54Mbps/2.4GHz line includes the WG511 Wireless PC Card, WG602 Wireless Access Point, and WGR614 Wireless Router.

Netgear's 802.11g products provide up to 54Mbps wireless connections in the same 2.4Ghz ISM band as 802.11b (tops at 11Mbps) but most 802.11g AP and routers will be backwards compatible with 802.11b. Netgear also delivers next generation wireless security with a simple future firmware upgrade to Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which includes Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP).

This (that a real AP has to do wireless to wireless bridging) is a misconception. Both of these router run Intersil AP firmware to provide AP functions.

By IEEE 802.11 standards, an AP is only required to implement an AP. In other words, it should provide connection point for stations (clients) in infrastructure mode and MR314 and MR814 certainly does provide all required AP functions including association, deassociation, roaming-in and roaming-out etc.

Now, bridging, WDS and all the other fancy stuff are not mandatory functions of an AP. They are extra or bonus!

DR. TCP: I have read your replies to many posts. While you seem very knowledgeable, you don't seem to answer anyone’s questions?

Can you tell IFM (and myself) if it IS possible to connect 2 MR814s as he asked. Not in theory, but in fact.

I have been trying to find this information for weeks... Netgear's support is abysmal!

If ANYONE has any information on this subject, it would be GREATLY appreciated!
