NEW Pet Food Recall: Natural Balance Recalling Venison Dry Foods
by lilhurricane Tuesday 17-Apr-2007
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Natural Balance Pet Foods recalled two kinds of pet food after receiving reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.

The recall includes all date codes of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food. The company does not know the cause of the problem, but said it is focused on one particular lot.

Natural Balance Pet Foods is working with the FDA to investigate the matter and is urging consumers to not feed either pet food product to their animals.

Re: MORE????????

Mix it with plain boiled white rice

Chicken liver is inexpensive...also can be boiled & mixed with rice. Ground turkey..boiled same

Re: MORE????????

Nice idea, too bad he doesn't like rice. OR liver (beef or chicken or otherwise), ground turkey, or most anything else you can possibly think of...lol

I've mentioned before, He could have given MORRIS of 9-lives fame a run for his money in the finicky department.

P.S. last time (first time too) I gave him rice, he buried it in my shag rug in my bedroom. Got rid of the rug like two years ago and still found a few pieces of rice in it...lol.

Re: MORE????????

My cat also turned his nose up at the chicken and rice so I added a few pieces of stinky oily sardine. He bolted through that bowl and looked around for more.

It's not balanced though so I am looking around for a "safe" prepared food.

Tried Fancy Feast packets which are not on the list and I even called the company and was assured they were OK. Adding a bit at a time and will see if he will eventually come off the home made meals and accept the prepared food exclusively.

he's turned his nose up at Sardines twice recently (we used to feed them frequently to the Collie, and still have many cans.)

He HAS eaten tuna, but only very rarely.

Believe me, I've tried everything you can possibly think of....

Hope everyone else has better luck with their kiddies....

They use Menu foods, so I'm not going near their food. I thought of them too cos I buy lots of meds and stuff from them.

Re: MORE????????

This is becoming infuriating. Apparently the Chinese government is dragging their feet in helping the FDA in the investigation. What a surprise.
Anyway - we've switched to Pedigree as none of their products are made by menu foods. Maybe some of you can try some of the products for your dogs. Don't know for the cat people, sorry. Maybe Trader Joe's Tuna for Cats?
Dog lovers,

We would like you to know that PEDIGREE® Food For Dogs is not a part of the recent nationwide pet food recall initiated by Menu Foods and other companies. The safety of products not involved in the recall was validated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the FDA, pet owners should feel confident feeding unrecalled products to their pets. All of our PEDIGREE® products remain a safe, nutritious and delicious way to feed your best friends.

Menu Foods does not make PEDIGREE® dry or wet Food For Dogs and there is no melamine in our wet or dry products.

As dog lovers ourselves, the safety and nutritional quality of our food is our top priority, and you should continue to feel confident feeding our food to your dog.

If you're unsure about what to feed your best friend at the moment, we'd like to invite you to try PEDIGREE® products and rest easy that it's 100% safe for your dog. But let me ask you this, if a company has one contaminated product, are you going to assume that that's ALL that there's a problem with from that company? not to mention the fact that Menu foods isn't exactly being open and helpful with the authorities from what I hear. Why would I support the company? I'd much prefer to support someone who didn't have contaminated products at all.

Have I totally missed the mark? or is that a coherent position to take?

Suggestion update.

I just spoke with my Vet who is very good, and he suggested BABY FOOD. THat's one thing I haven't yet tried. Just make sure there's no ONION powder in it.

For those that have NOT seen it, I went to the NAtural Balance web site this morning and the recall HAS been extended to include the canned Venison too....

Petco actualy questioned WHY I was returning the entire case yesterday. I couldn't belive it. They didn't give me a hard time, but I can't believe they asked WHY......

P.S. after 5 different kinds, he ate the beechnut turkey & rice dinner, so I guess he'll be getting that for a while.

»Pet Food Chemical Contaminant Found in Second Ingredient, Recall

Ok, maybe that explains WHY, but it sure doesn't make me feel any better, much less the people who actually lost family members (pets).
