What specific phone is it? Some phones have had GPS chips in them (Nextel for example) since 2002. GSM phones don't even need GPS at all. They use TDOA triangulation for 911. My AT&T LG CU515 which i got this year has no GPS chip. My Sprint and Nextel phone however does. But AT&T and T-Mobile don't use GPS to determine 911 location Thats a broad, but incorrect statement. Some GSM handsets use TDOA, while others use GPS. Still others use AoA technology to determine your location. It all depends on the manufacturer and how they designed the phone. -- If history teaches us anything, it teaches that simple-minded appeasement or wishful thinking about our adversaries is folly. -Ronald Reagan-

| Re: Election The real thing is Americans need to stop being a LAZY BUNCH and start holding politicians accountable. It doesn't matter who wins. What matters is we're so disenfranchised, we have let these corrupt NITWITS run things into the ground at our experience. Even if a 3rd party were to get elected, they'd become like the other two in no time. What needs to be done to instill change is the American Public SCREAM, KICK (not literally)YELL, and SHOW UP AT DOORSTEPS every time these guys have legislation that is BAD for Americans. WE as a people need to be involved. Unfortunately, only 30 percent of us vote. Then, our next interaction in politics is going to the polls a subsequent November. Politicians know this and they get a free ride. Then come election time, it's back to empty promises and being corrupt once elected. We're to blame as we LET IT HAPPEN. | |

| Not stupid at all.
Lets say you vote for a Democrat because you didn't like the Republican. That says nothing.
Vote for a 3rd party that supports an issue like privacy and sets that as one of their core values. Now, if the incumbent loses because a large number of votes went to that third party...
You can bet that privacy is going to be a big focus in the next candidate's platform.

If Obama loses because people voted 3rd party, it says to the Dems that their platform was flawed (once again). If McCain loses, it says the same thing about Repubs.
Voting 3rd party causes the 2 major parties to refine their platform to something more palatable to those who voted 3rd party previously. voting 3rd party does nothing but make the people who vote 3rd party feel good about themselves - "see, it's not my fault, i voted for ______"
that, and inflate the egos of the candidates themselves. creating inflated egos and hot air is the baliwick of american politics, but producing a WINNER would be the goal, IMHO, of any political party. if voters are as disaffected by the two party system, as it's been claimed to high heaven, where the fuck is this magic third party that will fix everything?
oh wait, there isn't one-you know, a real political party with money, people, and a chance to win.
i personally believe our country is way too diverse for two parties, but nobody has created a third or fourth party with real interests behind it.

| Re: Election said by satellite68 :As I stated originally, third party voting NOW is a waste of a vote, that proves/says nothing other than "Look at me, I did something different that only makes me look good" And that will magically change when a party with what YOU define as "real interests" comes to the forefront?
Tell me, how does this magical 3rd party get so much money that it can afford to burst onto the national scene with a presidential candidate - against the onslaught of negative ads by the deeply entrenched Republican and Democratic parties? Hell, if you saw the Republican debates then you've seen what happens to a moderately well-funded Republican who doesn't toe the party line (Paul).
You see, if you actually knew anything about 3rd parties, you'd understand that they've tried that for decades to no avail. So, some parties (like the Libertarians) have focused on electing local reps first so as to gain some familiarity from those who don't understand the flaws of the 2-party system, or worse yet from those who, like you, think it's pointless no matter what.
I guarantee that if you post your personal political preferences online, that there's ALREADY a third party that advocates for you, but instead of supporting that party, you'll continue to vote for the flawed 2-party system. -- "What makes us omniscient? 1 edit | The private companies are selling data around the world
This is just an NSA possibility, and not proven as true by this story. But these firms mentioned in the story are foreign private firms that collect info from all countries and sell this data around the world.
a number of private companies now sell off-the-shelf data-mining solutions to government spies interested in analyzing mobile-phone calling records and real-time location information. These companies include ThorpeGlen, VASTech, Kommlabs, and Aqsacom--all of which sell "passive probing" data-mining services to governments around the world.
After describing all the ways that the government could legally collect real-time data on millions of U.S. citizens, Gidari said that essentially, the existence of such a program would likely remain a secret (barring a whistle-blower or leaks to the press by government officials).
Ohm said that Congress would not be too happy:
If [the sharing of data by niche telecom providers] is seen as allowing an end-around an otherwise clear prohibition in the SCA, Congress is likely to throw a fit when it is revealed and try to amend the law. DOJ is sensitive to this kind of thing (despite what the NSA wiretapping program would lead you to believe) and would probably try to avoid blatantly bypassing otherwise clear language in this way. Thorpeglen based in England. Vastech based in South Africa. Kommlabs based in India. Aqsacom based in the Czech Republic.
Short version: NSA getting and using info this way is possible and apparently legal. But it doesn't mean they are actually using this capability on U.S. data. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

YouTube is another one that has a huge data base on the things they know you like to watch or do and can even check the popularity of a subject and now you wonder why your local news may play a youtube clip. Even places like walmart know what you like to buy during a storm and I could go on all day but remember its all for your safety. -- Are you part of the cattle?

| Nothing new - conversations too It doesn't surprise me that the US Govt is collecting data about your whereabouts.
After all, they have spent tens of billions of dollars on a network of 'secret' spy satellites - low orbital satellites that are able to pick up and collect cell phone conversations. (Remember Colin Powell's address to the UN, with the supposed cell phone conversation on WMDs?) Low orbital satellites fly over every point on the globe. Do you think they turn them off as they pass over the USA?
The network is such that there is always one overhead collecting transmissions of all of the entire cell phone bands, which is then downlinked and digitally stored.
