NSA Freely Gobbling Up Your Cell Data Too? Interconnect and backhaul companies circumvent wiretap laws... Monday Sep 08 2008 18:35 EDT Tipped by FFH5 Those of you still laboring under the illusion that privacy still exists online after the recent wiretapping debate might find this CNET piece a highly speculative but interesting read. Sure, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint can now hand over any and all of your data without accountability or a warrant, but cellphone tower operators may also be handing over your locational GPS data and much, much more. Companies like Sprint are increasingly selling their towers to other companies, and, given wiretap laws don't always apply to these interconnection agents, it's likely the NSA has direct access to large datasets of mobile phone usage records. CNET's exploration of the software that mines this data for relationships among "troublemakers" is particularly interesting. |
