NSA Would Prefer You Not Photograph Their New Snooping Warehouse
Forbes Drives Around New NSA SuperComputer Center in Utah
by Karl Bode Wednesday 06-Mar-2013 tags: business · bandwidth · privacy · world
With carriers now happily (and retroactively legally) dumping all voice and Internet data in real time in the NSA's lap, the agency needed more computing power to dig through the noise. The NSA's new $2 billion supercomputer warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah, exposed by Wired last year, is the answer to that problem -- housing 25,000 square feet of traffic analysis computing power. Forbes (hat tip to Techdirt) rather unsurprisingly found that the government doesn't like visitors with cameras at their under-construction super spy-warehouse, and the story is worth an amusing read. The supercomputer center is slated to come online in September.

Classy Sign

So the sign either means it's serious business or it's a massive joke. Take picks I'd say to this one!

Re: Classy Sign

Hmm I see this building, and anything connected to it, as being really all that it really is, the ultimate, the pinnacle of creation for any hacker worth their reputation.

Holy eggs all in one basket batman.

Way to go NSA, nothing like pretending to be the ultimate in hacker porn eh.

Re: Classy Sign

It's not just the NSA. Most Federal Government agencies frown upon, and even forbid, pictures/videos of their facilities, especially the security and protection mechanisms. This is not surprising at all, especially since the "authorized personnel" and "no trespassing" signs were posted upon entrance to the grounds.

Why did they build it near a highway if they do not want pictures of it? Because if you take the pictures from the highway they cannot legally stop you as you are taking them from public land.

Technically they were not on private property either, their taxes and ours are funding it so we own that place too.(Not that I would use this excuse against the NSA goons with guns at gate. They like the CIA can lock people away and throw away the room.)

Just because your taxes pay for it doesn't necessarily mean that you have unfettered access to the grounds/facilities. That goes for any federally owned lands/buildings.

Notice the General's being taken out over emails to their girl friends??? The big problem is all this can be used to take out any one you want especially political foes. Whether you are doing anything or not it makes it very easy for a group to get into power and never leave. Any ways why did we spend all that money fighting the "cold war"? Wasn't it something about oppression like phones that were monitored by the police in east block countries???

No, but the Constitution/Bill of rights are there to protect me from an intrusive government. Snooping my communication without a warrant, or notifying me, is against those rights.

Thus shrugging ones shoulders and saying "I have nothing to hide" is akin to saying you would like to live in a country that is run like North Korea, China, where the individual has no rights at all.

And that's where I take a little bit of issue. Are your communications being intruded upon or snooped anymore than what already happens by your ISP? Or is it just because it's a government agency that scans your e-mail for keywords and then stores them in some bit bucket that will likely never be looked at again?

I will respond, but it more then likely is a waste of my time. We have an oppressive government that thinks americans are a threat! Rand paul has been on cspan about the oblamer administrations weaponized illegal drone use in America....Wake up dude!

I've heard/read/seen the Rand Paul filibuster actions. Good for him. As for use of drones in the US, you're crazy if you think that a drone will ever fire on a US citizen on our soil. The publicity would be insane no matter what ideology/party you subscribe to.

It can, and will be covered up. Anything this administration says they won't do, they will. What about that recent incident in crapafornia? The one where they pulled a waco and were caught saying burn it down...Trusting anything this administration says would be foolish, this one is much worse then the W Bush era...

Someone has been reading too much Prison Planet and Drudge Report.

What of the incident in California? The scumbag murdered how many police officers? They gave him a chance to surrender, he declined. Frankly they should have just shot him after that, but people who have never had to worry about dying when they go to work would whine. We're reduced to trying to gas him out and hoping that the gas is actually effective enough to negate his ability to kill more innocent people before we can secure his person and weaponry.

We had an incident in New York State a few years ago, where someone crippled two State Troopers and murdered a third. Google "Bucky Ralph Phillips". I thought for sure that SOB would be shot while resisting arrest, but the coward sneaked across the border into Pennsylvania and surrendered there in full view of the TV cameras. Apparently he was man enough to shoot three State Troopers in the back who couldn't even see him (not that it would have mattered if they had, scoped rifle vs. handguns...) but not man enough to engage them on equal footing.

Naturally NY gutted capital punishment, so the taxpayers get to feed this piece of trash for the rest of his godforsaken life. He'll have better medical care than many taxpayers, all on the dime of those taxpayers. It really would make so much more sense to hang the SOB.

Re: So they want no pictures and all that...

I listened to the same radio broadcast that you just cited. So what? He killed multiple police officers. They gave him a chance to surrender. He declined. So they killed him. I'm not seeing the problem here. The fact that they killed him with tear gas instead of a bullet is immaterial.

The use of deadly force is perfectly legal and morally just when one expects it to be used against them. What would you have them do? Kick down the door, enter the building, and give him a chance to kill yet another person? Deploy dozens of LEOs to wait him out for weeks, spending tens of thousands of dollars, and leaving their home neighborhoods unprotected?

He could have come out and surrendered when the building went up in smoke. If he had been shot with his hands in the air attempting to surrender you'd have an argument to make. Of course that's not what happened. He decided to go out in a blaze of glory, and I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

No Pictures location

If the NSA wants no pictures of their complex, they will get it by any means they choose or at their disposal including violation of life and seizure of property, intimidation/threats. Name your unconstitutional violation and it will happen. They will declare this site a national security facility and bypass any judicial recourse of freedom of the press violations. Those who choose to Violate the no pictures edict will face the full wrath of the latter day brown-shirted Danite avengers "as needed"

The sign is the sign at the entrance to the base.

The sign is the sign at the entrance to the base. Yes BASE, the NSA facility is contained fully within the boundary of Fort Williams military base.

Like any military base, they don't like people snooping around their perimeter. I'm not sure why they would be surprised that the military wouldn't want people snooping around.

2Billion for a 25K sq ft data center??

At my old employer we built many DC's from 90K to 150K sq ft in size data centers and they didn't even come close to a billion dollars each even AFTER factoring in all of the gear that goes inside them..

What a waste of money!

2 billion dollars, for a warehouse location. When it's other people's money the government is ready to waste it.

A lot of the US government is waste. Take a look at

CityTime- Original project cost: $63 million, 5 years
Ongoing project cost $600 million, completion date unknown.

SAIC the prime contractor on the project, paid NYC back so they wouldn't be indicted by the Feds, which would bar them from government contracts forever.

One way to put a stop to that, is charge the contractors on the job with fraud and give them a life sentence in the Supermax in Colorado.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration

What business does the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have spending our money, allocated to them for space exploration, on spying on the public (us). Come on really, think about it. Our government is becoming an abomination. I'm not saying whether or not there is a valid reason, making this type of thing necessary. I'm just saying our own government feels the need to circumnavigate due process and clarity of purpose, and we continue to let it.
