| Re: Why bother The problem was that that Ed Rendell decided that verizon has to go to every single township and sign the deals with them instead of just signing with PA and having that work state wide. There are a lot of different municipalities in PA as there are in many state. I can imagine that taking a lot of time. | |

The concern is not so much that less profitable areas will get deployed later, it's whether they'll get deployed to at all.

So if a business chooses to deploy their capital first where it makes the most economic sense, they're racist. Okay. Actually, in this country even poor people watch plenty of cable TV. So while there may be some economic incentives for wiring the rich areas first, they probably aren't as strong as a lot of people seem to be assuming.

| Finally some competition This is a great deal for everyone. Since when did the Cable Companies think they were going to operate in a competitive vacuum? Now all Verizon has to do is offer A La Cart TV services to go with the 'no caps' on data plan and we'll be getting somewhere. | |

| Its only a matter of time before verizon implements there own caps on there service. I will bet that it happens within a year. Any takers? That is good news that they have a goal(wiring the entire city with FiOS by 2014) and even better that they have a way out(those who've actually read the monster say that by and large it's a gift to Verizon, allowing them to wiggle out of those promises down the road). Either way competition is good for business and lets see where verizon takes it. | |

| Re: Its only a matter Why are you so sure Verizon will "CAP"? Caps are being employed by cable companies in an attempt to scare people away from on demand online services like XBox 360, Netflix and Hulu. The Telco's like Verizon know this and will continue with the unlimited data plans. Its called competition in the marketplace and I'm sure the consumer will benefit. As to Verizon hating poor people, It isn't happening here in NY. | |

| Re: Its only a matter Well the thing is Verizon offers their own VOD and cable TV service with FiOS, so they have the same incentive that the cablecos do- except that they're less dependent on cable TV for revenues. (They're instead dependent on landline telephone, which is a much worse market to be in and can't be eliminated with caps anyway) | |

| Cherry Picking????? Verizon is a business and it needs to make decisions that will allow them to see a return on their investment. That being said, Verizon will not be able to cherry pick easily or at all in NYC. When Verizon rolls out FiOS in the area served by a Central Office it rolls out to the entire area served by that central office, in NYC it would be rare to find a CO that only serves an affluent area without also serving areas that are much less affluent. For example, on Staten Island (which is a part of NYC), the Central Office that serves homes in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island also serves the Park Hill section of Staten Island. While Todt Hill has multi-million dollar homes Park Hill is much more economically depressed. Yet, both areas have FiOS service available to them. | |
