There is also no deadline for applicants, the solicitation is non-exclusive and open-ended. However, only Verizon is expected to seek a franchise. The company hopes to obtain one by year-end. You are dealing with government - which means SLOW. City council OK'd this in 2006. The city admin delayed until now. And Verizon won't get its franchise agreement until year end. -- My BLOG .. .. My 1Mb line costs just a little over what I used to pay for dial-up. Perhaps before long they'll be throwing away piss-ant 10 Mb lines for $25/month. Roll on FIOS!
ISP's are working hard to create higher revenue connections. Like cable, who would like to give over a hundred more stations for only $30 per month, faster speeds are only "a little more." With premium cable, internet, and cell phone I could easily pay more for them than I do for my house. We're being eaten alive I tell ya!

Time Warner is going to have to invest heavily in upgrades/price cuts to keep those customers because FIOS has the potential to steal them away in droves. FIOS is kicking Comcast's ass nicely in the Boston area. One of Comcast's techs who recently installed my Comcast Phone service told me he transferred down from the Boston area about one week before my install. He said that Verizon is doing so well, the amount of routes that Comcast had available to service went from 1400 down to about 86. Comcast offered him the option to come down to Atlanta if he wanted to stay with the company. My brother in law is also selling FIOS door to door in New Jersey. He said he signs up on average about 10 people per week (doing this part-time) who switch from Time Warner. Comcast better take note. If Ma Bell is allowed to come back together and it is Verizon who takes over AT&T and the other Bells (Qwest?), its pretty much a done deal for Comcast and other cable ISPs. Those guys make a lot of money... I heard they make a $100/commission for each triple play. I know someone who works in NJ part time doing that also.. He also tells me that most of the salesman are scam artists.. The local cable company also is sending them around trying to recapture FIOS customers. LOL.

Don't you just love the cableco commercials where they say "telephone company internet is 5-10X" slower than cable internet! Yeah, DSL!!! What a bunch of schemers! Then they say they have "always been fiber optic, the phone company is starting to talk fiber!!," Yeah, but if you can get 100% fiber vs a HCI hybrid network, FIOS wins!
The sad thing is that there are people out there that will believe this clever advertising and actually think FIOS is 5-10X slower than the average cable connection!

| FIOS No wonder why Time warner has been dropping analog channels and will add 50 channels by the end of april, and 100 by the end of the year because they knew that FIOS was coming.I've been a TWC customer in manhattan for so many years, they basically ripped me off along with many others customers. If they want me to stay with them they will need to improve the HD picture without compression, add many more channels and give me a discount from my current bill. which is $129 triple play without premiums channels. | |

The problem is the article summary, its misleading. The city council still hasn't seen the TV franchise agreement, it wasn't yet drafted back in 2006. I'm not sure what they did sign off on - perhaps allowing FiOS to initially deploy fiber OR to allow the mayor to initiate negotiations for a TV franchise agreement. As for the mayor and his flunkies delaying things - do you actually believe that Bloomberg needs the money? Bloomberg personally handling the negotiations was the ONLY chance we had for getting a deal done swiftly. If you wanted a quick negotiation, which would you rather see: the mayor "and his flunkies" or the city council? I know I'd rather have the mayor, and I'm sure Verizon would too. -- Happy With What I Have To Be Happy With

The fun's just about to start. The council didn't even open the market to more TV franchises when they voted in 2006. This announcement clears the way for Verizon to submit the proposal - something that the city council did NOT do previous. | awful RR & City Council RR has been awful 'broadband' in Man'h as pretty much the de facto provider. Evenings & weekends are downloads at dial up speed below 1000 on 10/500. Verizon can charge min of $150 month for Triple Play and get it easily unless TWC were to cut price in half. As to the crap City Council -- Ms Quinn (wants to be next Mayor) and crew are all over front pages for years of hiding millions in slush funds and doling our the funny money to non-existing crony organizations with made up paper account names. Idea is/was to keep them on the yearly tax budget. They make TWC look good. NYC with the Peso Dollar is like Cairo in terms of grease for all. Yeeh hah.

| Re: Peter Cooper/Stuyvesant Town Wiring Now Depends on what happens in the courts. The FCC recently issued a directive banning exclusive cable/internet contracts, both going forward AND backwards, i.e. cancelling previously negotiated exclusivity provisions. As you can imagine, a number of companies - both the providers and the apartments or housing developments that agreed to the exclusivity, typically in return for some compensation - are upset. I don't think a lawsuit challenging new rules has been filed yet but one is coming as sure as day follows night. | |
