The New York Times notes that the city's new $500 million high-speed wireless secure data network can, among other uses, expedite the disposal of dead opossum. The city's NYCWIN network, built by Northrop Grumman, includes some 400 cellular antennas (see pic) covering 95 percent of the city, with nineteen city agencies developing about 53 unique applications for the UMTS-based network. State Technology Magazine has a bit more detail on the network's surveillance uses.

Same thing with congestion pricing. The govt will know where all cars are at all times, and possibly who is inside the cars (if cameras good enough).

1 interesting fact

The system does NOT do voice. It is a data only network - at least for now. But no speculation was mentioned about voice in the future.

Re: 1 interesting fact

Seeing that it runs UMTS, there's no reason that it couldn't.

Interesting name for the network 'NYCWIN'
Sounds more like 'Nice Win', which would have been more appropriate to Northrop's contract.

DEP billing

The DEP is notorious for bad billing. This may be a good thing.
