(1010 WINS) (ALBANY) Unemployment fell from 6.5 percent in March to 6.2 percent in April, the lowest jobless rate in New York state since November 2002, state Labor Department statisticians said Thursday.

Private jobs grew by 0.1 percent in April, or by one-third of the national rate for the month. For the April 2003-April 2004 period, private employment grew by 0.7 percent in New York state, compared with 1.1 percent for the nation.

The April 2003-April 2004 private job count increased by 49,200, the best year-to-year growth since March 2001, when economists generally agree the national economy started to turn sour.
