Napster Marks Comeback with Oct. 9 Test Debut

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Napster, the pioneering song-swap service that was shut down for copyright infringement, is coming back next week to face the music as a paid site in a vastly changed online music arena.

Digital media company Roxio Inc., which bought Napster for $5 million last year, plans an Oct. 9 test launch for a new, legal version of the service called Napster 2.0, according to Napster spokesman Seth Oster.

Oster said the company also will unveil full details and the official launch date for Napster 2.0 at the service's "beta," or test, launch event in New York City, next Thursday, where over 200 members of the press and industry are invited.

A major recording artist will be featured at the event.

In the past Roxio had said Napster 2.0 would launch by Christmas, but sources familiar with the matter said the new Web site will be online and running no later than November.

Roxio bought the Napster assets in November 2002 touting the strength of the once popular brand name.

The strategy seems to be paying off as Roxio's stock has risen nearly four-fold from a low of $2.29 in late October last year to more than $9 currently. Roxio shares ended trading up 6.57 percent, or 57 cents, at $9.25 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday in a generally positive day for media stocks.

But while Napster commanded over 60 million users in its heyday before being idled for promoting unauthorized copying and free swapping of music, it now has to compete with a growing number of legitimate entrants to the online market as well as several renegade but popular swap sites like Kazaa that have sprung up in its wake.

Oster said Napster was confident it will be the strongest music service available by matching brand awareness with a superior product offering.

This past summer, Napster said it would be the only music Web site to offer consumers a choice between an a la carte download model or a premium subscription service.

Napster also will debut with a catalog of more than 500,000 songs, more than any other service to date.

Do you get to keep what you pay for and download?

I didn't see any mention in the article concerning restrictions.
I also didn't see any mention of the quality.

Appears to be like many of the others

The new Napster almost certainly won't be in mp3 format,
but will be in Windows Media Player 9 (read: DRM enabled
content). It will offer both individual songs for
download and a premium service. Even if there are 500,000
songs, it won't fly due to the restrictions that are
almost certainly going to be placed on the files.

Uh! What?

Yawn!!

It will fail!

It will probably be in the hated Windows Media format and therefore DRMed. Why buy something with restrictions when you can get the same item FREE with no restrictions at all!!

According to -> »www.napster.com/facts.html

You can "enjoy fast and easy CD burning", "Quickly and easily transfer music to an integrated portable device" and "Integrate tracks from Napster with existing MP3 collection". And for $9.95 a month you can have "Unlimited streaming and downloading".

To me this means for $9.95 I can download everything I want and burn it to CD or transfer it to my car mp3 player. I would pay it if it means good quality, fast downloads, CD burning, and none of this misnamed beeped static filled kazaa downloads.

hey hold your horses! :) Read that very carefully. "Integrate tracks... with existing mp3" means nothing. You probably have already wma music files and mp3 files in your music folder. What they don't tell you is that you will have to fire up your Windows Media Player to play the songs you download from this Napster since they will be DRMed.

They say that for $9.95 per month you can have unlimited streamming and downloading, BUT they don't mention "CD burning" You are assuming you can burn them, but that might not be true. Always look for the important things NOT mentioned in the ad. Don't you think they would be shouting in big words that you can burn to CD all the downloads that you get for the $9.95 monthly price? What would happen if you stop the subscription? What would happen if you burned your songs to a cd and then wanted to copy them back to a new bigger hard disk that you buy or to another pc? Would a secret code transfer to your cd during the burning process that would keep you from copying back your songs to another Hard Disk?

Like you, I would like to buy cheap high quality music, but these people write their ads very carefully to deceive and I don't like to be fooled.

Until they say very clearly: "no DRM, no windows media player required, music to own forever, no tricks", I won't buy.

One suggestion: make a list of things you would like to do with your music and then read their ad again and don't assume anything. You will be surprised! :):)

Re: Uh! What?

look at what they define as a download...
something like:
copyable to 3 different machines(including the original one)
play unlimited times while you still pay them the monthly fee
no cd burning
