1 edit | Wait a minute.... How can they claim to be working with residents, when the residents don't know they are coming until the back-hoes show up in their front yard?
Not that I am completely on the side of the home owners, I understand these things have to go somewhere. But I find it hard to believe anyone is putting any thought into the actual placement beyond the basic engineering of it. A box that size being moved 10ft one way or the other makes no difference to the network, but could make a huge difference in how much it detracts from the home. -- Intel Q6600 @3400Mhz/GA-EP35-DS3P/2x 2048Mb G.Skill/Seagate 750.10/EVGA 8800GT's SLI/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler

(although something that hurts the visual appeal of their home could end up costing them far more than what they'd get in free internet) Unfortunately companies don't even try to reach out like that anymore - they say "We're GOING to put that big thing in your yard, and then if you want to go ahead and use part of its services you can for a mere $60+ a month."

| Shrubbery It would an interesting survey to find out how many of the complaining homeowners just have 'Lawn' in front of their house and nothing else... These are generally the same people who complain about power poles and all the lines attached to them, spoiling the view out the second story windows.....
Electrical transformer housings are bigger. And people fix the look of them on the corner of their lot with Shrubbery.
But the only real problem is when the cabinets trespass onto private property, due to no surveys being done for property lines.

They will have to go to the corner, or the end of the block, which would be fine with me. -- dnoyeB "Then said I, Wisdom [is] better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom [is] despised, and his words are not heard. | Ugghhh Ummm... People want to complain and moan about high internet prices and high cable TV prices...yet when an alternatives come to light they say "screw that, I don't want that". Beggars can't be choosers. I don't care if it decreases my property value (by how much probably isn't even worth mentioning...home owners probably just want to complain about something), I am all for competition and bringing prices down. When prices for services like internet decrease, you get more money in the economy, more money in the economy means more jobs, more jobs means people get more money. Especially if there is competition for internet access, I mean that just opens up so many doors (good and bad) for everyone. Yet we are more worried about healthcare than improving our own economy (there was a petition against the bailout and their argument was that it could be used for healthcare). What these people don't know is they already have free/cheap healthcare! It's either a bowl of chicken soup and a nights rest or its some duck tape to realign the broken bones. And if you know you might get hurt...don't do it; otherwise be prepared to suck up to the pain. I never played any sports, never had a broken bone in my life. I have been pretty sick a couple of times, but nothing a nights rest and a bowl of chicken noodle soup couldn't fix....

| Re: Ugghhh That's correct. Its ran from the small pedestal box (2 ft high roughly) to your home. The pedestal box may be several houses down. The day of or day before installation is when the fiber is pulled. (This is for burial fiber, not sure how/when aerial fiber is ran) | |

Yea great plan give me a break having vrads in your yard does not lower your home price, but not having dsl,or cable does lower prices nobody wants to buy a house that only has dialup.this is a very stupid discussion because we are talking about right-aways if you don't want to see the vrads then plant bushes problem solved, and these isp need to cut off the people that complain and let them use dialup we will see how many complain then.AT&T i welcome you to put one in my yard

I think that AT&T actually did have what amounted to a "no bitching" policy in their Service Agreement, saying service may be suspended if a customer's comments "tends to damage the name or reputation of AT&T, or its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries.".

But by how much? This is the question that always runs in my mind.
But, seeing as uverse is the new "thing" on the market, if we make the argument that it will decrease property value we can inturn say it will increase it. Sure the other houses values will increase but does the ((increase in value by the vard) - (decrease in property value by the vrad)) >= 0?
I would love to see one these homeowners who are complaining to give me paperwork to prove my formula wrong.

True, but the whole neighborhood is increased, except perhaps for the unfortunate house with the neighborhood cabinet.*

@direcpc.com
| it doesn't matter anyway as they are putting these vrads on county or utility right aways.they can do just about anything they want to ,and nothing you can do about it
also its not like they are putting vrads in every yard they are only a few yards in a 4 or 5 mile radius, and we all have much more to worry about when it comes to lower home prices than utilities in the yard.if people don't want to see utilities then move to the country, use dialup, and stare at trees

said by Eat Me :Some people are real idiots. They want utilities yet don't want the infrastructure to do it. People complain about dropped calls, yet don't want cell towers. People are buying more devices that use more power, yet don't want new power lines or power plants. People want FiOS and U-Verse and don't want the lawn boxes. Might as well toss these idiots back into the digital stone age and leave them with dialup, because that's exactly what they deserve. Agreed and 2 shiny gold sovereigns to you 'Eat Me'
However I have a slightly different take. Everyone has heard the saying 'Money Talks And Bull$hit Walks' haven't they? Now I don't live in Nashville, however I'm close in Clarksville. I have a fiber connection, and ditched AT&T about 6 months ago.
Why not this plan? 1. Talk to local homeowner. Negotiate to pay said homeowner $XXXX a month to install said device on premesis, much like how cell phone towers are constructed. 2. Install the entire box 10'-30' completely underground, leaving a small pedestal or two for ventilation, and a strategically camouflaged staircase, or perhaps a ground level elevator for technician access. Install compressed CO2 fire suppression to put out a fire when the batteries explode. (If ever)
This way homeowner is happy because they have some money coming their way for use of their property, and the neighborhood is happy they have faster internet, better tv and phone service, no one sees a 'box' in there yard and so on. It might be more expensive to implement at first, but in the long run the cost would become neutralized by: 1. not being forced to spend money to send someone to paint over the graffiti that will inevitability end up on the box.
2. With it being underground it would be impervious to most weather conditions and other possible forms of destruction that would damage said equipment: Tornado, Hurricane, Earthquake, Nuclear attack, et al.
3. Depending on how these systems work, (and I'm not sure how they do) It seems to me they could install 5 or 10 of these 'boxes', strategically placed throughout a neighborhood and run a service conduit with the local service drop to each home (or business) forgoing the need for a pedestal every hundred feet saving money on pedestals and copper line.
However, like I said I don't know if that would work. I don't work for AT&T. Maybe I'm too idealistic perhaps?

| Re: These people are idiots there several problems with that idea. 1-utilities/township 'owns' so many feet into a property from the road and can pretty much do what they please while cell phone towers are most likely put onto land in which it is either bought by a cell phone company or is renting space on private land 2- 10'x30' all underground? ARE YOU CRAZY?? do you realize how much it would cost to build that and how long it would take to get the permits for each site and how long it would take to build it? nevermind if there are already underground lines or other utilies like gas, sewer, water. home owners would start to kill ATT for doing this. also you are ignoring that in some locations you CAN'T build underground (high water table or permafrost near groundlevel for a couple reasons or there is a building in the way) 3-'cost neutralizing'? BS! graffiti cleaning is total BS. most graffiti occurs places where there is high population density, thus pretty much no room to build underground that is away from the street and diging in the street would create a nightmare for pretty much everyone else. saving money on copper wire? uh last time i checked, the VRADs more or less use the existing wire for the last couple thousand feet.
people are already throughing a fit that a cabinent is being placed in their yard, and you want to completely destroy their yards to put in a underground bunker? even i would through a fit, if i put years and thousands of dollars to make my yard look nice, i'd probably take them to court without thinking twice.
have you ever heard of a reality check? i'd suggest you should look into one.
