NebuAd Not Too Chatty With Press These Days
After their entire business model got up and walked away....
by Karl Bode Tuesday 02-Sep-2008 tags: legal · privacy

Apparently a Congressional investigation into buying user browsing data from ISPs without a functional user opt-out process is bad for business. The Associated Press pens a short exploration (postmortem?) of behavioral advertising firm NebuAD, who saw all of their ISP partners run to the hills when the investigation began. Not too surprisingly, NebuAD doesn't appear to be very chatty these days with the media, so it's not clear if they actually have any customers left. The company is developing a new opt-out system that actually works, but under prolonged inquiry by politicians eager to see such services be opt-in, it's not clear they'll survive long enough to implement it.

Gone For Now But Not Dead Yet

Don't worry, NebuAD will be back once it pays off finances the re-election campaign of the appropriate Congre$$ional puppet(s) to add an obscure national security clause buried in a five thousand page report on subject matter that has zip to do with broadband and whose sole purpose is to allow its business model. I further expect NebuAD to return with a fuzzy new name, as well...something along the lines of LuvUAD...yunno, because selling private data to the highest bidder without disclosing it is a form of love for the subscriber.

Re: Gone For Now But Not Dead Yet

Of course we will see them again. Someone has to be funding them. I actually believe it is still going on but people have shut up about it.

Cable companies and telco's don't give in this easy when there is a buck to be made. They freely give customers information out at the drop of a hat. Why should this be a problem for them?

Actually. You are correct. I should have included them.

Well, anything to enhance your browsing experience

We already have an honest opt-in ad based ISP called NetZero. I agree, to change to opt-in would be to change their business model. Changing business models doesen't make much sense. You are who you are. They should be allowed to die peacefully
