NetZero Tries Wireless
Signs Pact With Clearwire
by Karl Bode Monday 07-Nov-2011 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · wireless
While dial-up is largely dead, it's interesting to note that AOL, one of the mainstays of dial-up connectivity, still claims to have 3.5 million dial-up customers. It's not clear how many of those people either couldn't get cancel-stingy AOL to close their account, or just put the subscription on a credit card they don't keep tabs on. Regardless, AOL dial-up competitor NetZero is braving onward -- announcing that they've signed an agreement with Clearwire allowing NetZero to sell wireless broadband. "NetZero has been delivering high quality, free and value-priced Internet access since 1998, and we believe this deal with Clearwire will give us the ability for the first time to bring affordably-priced, 4G high-speed mobile broadband service with 6 mbps to 10 mbps speed to the masses," insists Netzero.

Still know.

I still know at least a few hundred people on dialup. Multiply that by the US ration non-56k:56k and those numbers sound a bit right if on the low end I might add.

You know of or personally know a few hundred people on dial up?

Re: Still know.

Still do. That's an aspect of my field I'd love to be able to upgrade every client from, but let's face it, not always an option.

For example, Where I live now, I know of at least 11 people on dialup that have no other financially viable option.

Some of my other networks have dozens of clients still on dialup, with no end in sight as they are in non-servicable areas for coax or dsl. A few of them would qualify for Sattelite, but I only say a few because a majority of them feel it's WAY too expensive. As for WiFi networks they seem to have coverage not much bigger than coax/copper because of FCC regulations, so whats the point. i.e. still not big enough to reach them.

2 problems - no prices yet; Clearwire availability poor

This is a "who cares" offer because it isn't priced yet and the availability of Clearwire 4G coverage is so poor.

Re: 2 problems - no prices yet; Clearwire availability poor

This is moot in my area of rural southeastern MD. The nearest Sprint tower is nearly 30 miles away, and that tower just got 3G last year. We are not on the list for an upgrade to 4G/LTE from any of the national carriers for at least another year, if not longer. The nearest Clearwire tower is in Baltimore 150 miles away.

Not all Sprint towers have the Clear equipment in Clear markets. Clear co-located on other towers as well.

Clear probably won't put any of their equipment in this section of the state. The largest town (30 miles from me) has a population of about 30,000.

Is Netzero still $0?

When it first came out Netzero cost what it name said, zero. When you dialed in an ad window paid for your online service.

I'd like to see an updated version of this with video ads as long as it's free. And I'm sure with an unemployment rate above 9% I'm not alone in this. Ramen & YouTube anyone?

Maybe i can stop paying them for my usb modem now...

I guess if your use to getting 5kbs then 70kbs a second is a hell of a upgrade huh?In a perfect world clearwire is a smashing success giving millions an alternative to high cableprices but in large citys its worse then 10 year old DSL.

Re: Maybe i can stop paying them for my usb modem now...

If you have clearwire, and you live on a municipally maintained road, you have cable. The wimax shills that promised a mom and pop WISP on every hill 5 years are all quiet now. I would say useless (5gb cap) Verizon 3G covers 20x more than clearwire and cable covers 10x more. Even Sprint CDMA has more coverage than clearwire. Clearwire is urban. Not rural or bedroom communities.

Cap?

If no caps I would sign up.
I wont last long on ATT as I got some BS overage notice for my unlimited internet last month and I am not sure how many months I can go before they say they no longer want my money.

If there are caps then it will just be another ISP that refuses to take my money.

Do you mean another ISP that you refuse to give your money to? Significant difference

Re: Cap?

I would never refuse to give my money to a real ISP.
All I can do is call and say I will give you $50 or (whatever they charge) per month if you give me real internet that is not restricted/capped.

I had uncapped internet from 1995 to 2011. (uncapped att DSL from 2000 to 2011) It makes no sense to revert back to pre 1995 internet days.

If I did not have a job, I would go occupy the ATT office parking lot. LOL

So your ISP has refused to take your money? I'm guessing not.

No yet. But what happens when I keep going over their cap?
Will they eventually refuse to take my monthly payments and cancel my service???
(FYI, I am not downloading any differently then I did for the past 11 years with ATT, actually I probably do less downloading now than back in 2000).

relevant? gonna take alot of effort to prove it

Clearwire is trying to find a business model that will get consumers interested. Right now that doesn't seem to be working, so they're (apparently) putting out all the so-called familiar brands consumers know to partner with.

My question is... when Clearwire fails who's going to draw that map of how many tenticles they've partnered with over the short timespan they've tried to hock wireless spectrum for Sprint?

Seriously, with all this effort being put to partering with NAMES YOU MUST KNOW (yeah, sound like a movie quote..) you'd think they could just lower their prices and just offer the services themselves (LET THE LOW PRICES TALK!) Unlimited 6-15mbit broadband for $20 a month would bring a whole lot more customers online who previously can't even get DSL (shucks, even those WITH DSL)-- that's who they should be targeting.

If Net0 actually becomes a partner they should offer an AD business model that supports 1-3mbit unlimited OR 300 hours of ad supported or 6-15mbit for FREE (TO THE CONSUMER)/MONTH.
