Netflix Makes History: Streaming Series Nominated For Emmy
Push Into Original Programming Makes Great Strides
by Karl Bode 04:47PM Thursday Jul 18 2013
Part of Netflix's core strategy moving forward as it does battle with the disruption-phobic cable and broadcast industry is to offer more and more original series, and judging from Emmy nods this week (the first ever for an online-only series) -- that effort is going well. Netflix made history this week with the news that their original series "House of Cards" and their scrapped-then-salvaged series "Arrested Development" have both been nominated (the full nomination list is here). House of Cards saw particular attention, the political drama receiving nine total nominations including best drama, best lead actress in a drama (Robin Wright), and best lead actor in a drama (Kevin Spacey).

And I just Cancelled

It's a great service and AD and HOC are top notch. I just wasn't using the service.

Isn't it nice that it's month to month though, and affordable. No 1 or 2 year contract. Sign up when you want it, stop when you dont.

They are really accelerating their content. I was just finishing up Lost (you really need to see it together) and noticed this Orange is the new black which is the same wacky director as weeds. So they are already grabbing talent from the payTV channels. If you think about it ST maybe has 2 good shows HBO 4-5. For $17 a month for HBO it's an absolute RIP compared to Netflix at half the price. They are even starting to get some good movies again. If you must see GOT it's way cheaper to buy it or pirate it. I've never seen it because the buy is expensive and I figure in a couple of years it will be cheaper and free and then I can enjoy it. I dont care if I see a show 5 years later. Even so it's only $28 to buy the season...Not that bad actually....Content is in the cloud now.

Amazon is getting into the game too... Inside the Dome is Lostish and much lamer but it's a good start. They have a few good shows. Their Roku interface blows chunks tho, Netflix is marginally better. Xbox better on both.

Until Netflix produces a show as good as Game of Thrones, then it is not an absolute ripoff.

GOT is really good. Had to read the books which are so much better than the show. The show's well done, but the books are so much deeper. House of Cards is excellent and Arrested Development.. is just comedy genius.

Which one? weeds had 10 maybe 12 directors (executive/managing) and dozens of first and second unit 'film' directors, as well as dozens of producers over the series. Each had a somewhat unique spin.
All Hollywood at it's best. it would be nice to see another hit(not smoke ) for/from that group.

Think he meant creator/director Jenji Kohan.

Honestly I've never understood the point of the terms writer/creator/director/producer etc. Just another way for more people to cash in.

Re: And I just Cancelled

They are specific jobs with specific skills, some that can be trained (like how to write things down in an organized way) and some you are born with/learn very early on (like how a writer imagines a develops a story)
A million monkey on a million typerwrtters MIGHT write an episode of weeds, but
1}who would make a single episode that monkey wrote?
}2 who would notice this epsode?
3 who can afford a million monkey, typerwitters and paper per episode?

and could they type and develop characters for 7 seasons of consistently funny to humans TV shows?
seems unlikely

You live in LA and really don't understand what those roles all do? Do you think the creator of a show rights every bit of dialogue for each episode and then directs it all while supervising the entire production until the series ends?

No, but I do think that the creator of a show does WRITE some dialogue.

Re: And I just Cancelled

Yeah actually, I expected a creator to do the majority of those things except provide the financial portion.

My bad and for the record, doesn't really matter that I live in LA. I don't really spend time trying to learn things that are not beneficial for my lifestyle :>

Under the dome is a CBS show. Amazon shows it five days after it airs on CBS.

I see new episodes of Under of Dome hours before it is on TV. The show sucks anyway. To much sex.

Orange is the New Black is a fantastic show. That should get some award nominations too.

Agreed. I was going to watch it over a longer period of time, however, I got caught up in it and am happy to hear that it's already renewed.

It's nice but....

The movie selection is horrible... The only reason I keep it is for my daughter and my mom, otherwise I wouldn't have it, but paying $7 so my daughter can watch disney cartoons is worth the cost.

Who is to blame for the movie selection on Netflix?
Content providers or Netflix? Providers want lots of money, Netflix wants to pay as little as possible.

How high should Netflix raise it's rates to get the content you want, then would you use Netflix?

I'd be willing to go 15 bucks a month, but not much more.
I doubt that there are many who would be willing to ggo that high.

An excellent value for what it is...

... I'm current on hold with NF as we kinda striped through a lot of the series we wanted to see and got a year promo from ComCast which ends soon.
then we'll probably drop back to Netflix, huluplus and Amazon prime My son just got a cheap follow-up to his college prime acct. this one has video so we are going thru their best effort for now (interface is awkward to search on TV ok a on computer, big advantage Netflix) still a couple original hits doesn't fill a network or even a single channel.

Netflix needs to bring in all cheap content it can get

Old TV shows. Foreign shows and films. Anime. They are already good with Documentaries.

It's worth it. And it will get better and better.
