Netflix Nets First Run Rights For Weinstein Films
Netflix struck a major deal with The Weinstein Company this week that will give Netflix exclusive first-run rights to Weinstein films during the traditional pay TV window, giving Netflix a leg up on its attempt to compete more directly with premium content channels HBO and Showtime. The deal doesn't take effect until 2016. It's a far cry from the deals many broadcasters have gotten Netflix to sign to reduce the company's competitive impact, such as all of the deals that force Netflix to delay offering new releases in the belief that doing so would prevent the erosion of DVD sales.

Not what I would call a big win for Netflix. Their stable of films is pretty weak. Their big stars are foreign films and documentaries.

Re: The Weinstein Company Filmography

It's ONE of the elements they need to be a cable competitor.
A lot of why HBO and SHO have so dominated the high end of pay tv is they gain the rep in the Industry as willing to buy and back the development of projects and spend the time to polish them for release without destroying the creators vision.

NF is in the process of gaining right to a broad stable of works, they HAVE to be seen as a consolidator of channels, not just a single channel/network/genre in order to be seen as a cable substitute worth buying stand alone.

I was going to bitch about the story not telling us the names of some films but then after reading the list it would have been hard to list any films we knew.

I don't watch many movies either, but I have at least heard of 3 of them. Most of them seem to have a bit of a racial or political axe to grind, so they don't have much value to me as entertainment.

I'd have to see what they offer in 2016. They may be better by then.

Prevent the erosion of DVD sales? Who buys DVDs anyway?

I never could see the point in buying DVD's.

Unless you have kids, who is going to watch the same movie over and over again?

recently subbed to netflix in canada

And not needing to proxy for US netflix either (kinda funny the us courts making proxy illegal, their own government uses it for secrecy purposes doesn't it?) So what if I have to wait to watch it, we have to wait for the DVDs to come here as it is anyway, what with Canada being a bastion of piracy and thieves, at least according to the recording industry and Hollywood.
