Though the company doesn't rule out the possibility

Earlier this week, a job post at the Netflix website resulted in speculation that Netflix would be bringing their popular broadband streaming service to the Playstation 3, and potentially the Nintendo Wii. In comments to Gamesindustry.biz, Netflix vice president of corporate communications Steve Swasey dances the familiar PR two step, neither denying or supporting expansion to the PS3 platform. "For now, Netflix streaming on game consoles is exclusively on the Xbox 360 - and it's a terrific hit," says Swasey. Netflix proclaims that 1 million users have watched over 1.5 billion minutes of video since the service launched in November of last year.

I love it...

The selection could be better, but catching up on 30 Rock in HD anytime I want is great. It's good for my daughter also when she wants to watch a movie. Streaming it to the 360 is fantastic.

My PS3 is waiting

I'll be glad when they get on the stick with PS3 support. I've been waiting for a reason to switch from Blockbuster Online but Netflix's Blu-Ray upcharges made me rethink the switch. If they hurry up, I might actually have a reason to switch again.

And it'll give me more ammunition in our fight against Time Warner bandwidth caps here in the Triad/Greensboro market!

Have you checked out PlayOn? It's a retail product, but it streams Netflix Instant to any DLNA device, including the PS3.

Re: My PS3 is waiting

Yes. The downside is it isn't the same quality due to the required transcoding. Native Netflix support on PS3s will resolve that problem. For now it's just easier to hook my laptop up the TV via HDMI if I wanted to do it.

It has to. PS3 doesn't play Silverlight. Which is what Netflix uses for the web content it's delivering. Netflix used to use Flash but most people have been converted already to Silverlight.

That makes sense. I thought it was still Flash and I just assumed they created some sort of Flash proxy that would proxy the content to the DLNA device.

I've used other apps (like TVersity and Orb) that want to transcode everything and it destroys quality.

Netflix didn't use Flash for streaming, it was some Windows codec with DRM.

Netflix used to use Flash until they switched to Silverlight, which is the "Windows codec with DRM" that you're referring to.

Netflix never used Adobe Flash. The requirements for Netflix "Watch Instantly" was Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. The new method allow Macs to access the "Watch Instantly" streaming video because of Silverlight, which is available on both OSes and multiple browsers.

IIRC, It's VC9 with MS DRM wrapped around it. Closely related to MPEG4 but still 100% proprietary MS crapola (can you tell I hate MS and Silverlight)...

You do know Silverlight is free right? It's not open source, but MS doesn't charge a licensing fee for it. It's also superior to Flash (Flash in it's current form anyway) in every way imaginable minus ubiquity. Microsoft even worked with Novell to make sure it was developed for the Linux platform. (Moonlight)

Silverlight is absolutely a good direction for MS to take.

I have a paid version of Playon working with my PS3 as well, but don't believe it will be a long term solution. They seem to be playing a bit of cat & mouse with the content sources, where a given supplier (Netflix, CBS, Hulu, etc.) will drop off or become unreliable for a week or two and then return. It's also a pretty fragile application. Anything other than pause or play seems to freeze it up pretty fast.

I like it and it works as an interim solution, but native support in the PS3 would be better.

Same and same...thought the PS3 Media Server kicks ass They (Netflix) needs to get with Google if they're going to do it, as they've got it figured out....though isn't Silverlight a MS thing? Yeah.....that'll happen.

Dang! You beat me to it. I've been using it for about a week now. Works great and logs in to Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and Amazon video.

It works great with the PS3 and works pretty well with the DirecTV HR-21 boxes (the minor issues I've had I'm sure are related to the DTV box and the fact that that stuff is still "beta").

I even tested PlayOn with my Archos 5 over my wi-fi. Works like a charm!

And it transcodes everything and doesn't half way work. Google TVersity and the browser plugin.

It was just another product to compare with PlayOn. Working fine for my Wii, other PCS and my Dlink Media Lounge. PlayOn transcodes as well.

The UPnP media server does work well, it's all the other features that don't. If you want to just use it as a UPnP media server, it will work well.

I used to have netflix blue-ray service, but price hikes made me cancel it. Now I download mp4 content and play it natively on PS3. It also does decent job on divx / xvid.
I would rather have PS3 netflix solution for convenience, but I guess they don't want my money.

I know it's nice to have everything in one device

...but there are plenty of inexpensive set-top boxes for streaming Netflix. I use my 360, but it always worries me because video game system hardware is notoriously fickle and I don't want to have to replace my 360 in a year because of "overuse".

Re: I know it's nice to have everything in one device

Except that buying enough stand alone boxes to fullfil the uses of a PS3 or a 360 would cost the same as about 2-3 of the consoles, take up a lot more room, need a bunch of differnt cables and cable management to hook up, and you'd still need a console for the gaming aspect.

Re: I know it's nice to have everything in one device

It would be nicer if there was a way to easily stream both paid and free content from the internet to any TV we want. An article in the latest PC World magazine ("The Connected TV: Web Video Comes to The Living Room"), lists over a dozen gadgets, boxes, etc that offer internet content on a TV.

But, it's all paid or rented content, no mention is made of any free content- Hulu, CBS.com, ABC.com, AOLTV, MSNTV, etc etc- except for You Tube. If the networks are going to put the latest episodes of their series online, it would be nice not to have to watch them on the computer.

Streaming to the PC still good enuf fer me

With my 22 inch widescreen, streaming to the PC is just fine and dandy, thanks....

Better picture and sound (with my 5.1 Logitech system) than any of the tv's still workin in the house.

Pretty much all the tv's are used for in my house are to hook up the kids PS2 and xbox 360 with.

Sadly none of the Netflix streaming content has 5.1 audio. It's one of the things I really don't like about the solution -- once you get accustomed to true 5.1 surround on movies it's really hard to go back to 2 channel audio (even with "simulated" surround).

Hell no. 5.1, is utter amazing (if you got the system) to listen to and enjoy. I've tried listening to 2 channel stuff, and for myself, i thought it was a joke.

Two rooms and because the Roku is easy to travel with. Fits in your hand...built in wireless... Works great in hotels too!

Re: Roku and XBox360

I have a PS3 and a TiVo HD box. I'm good to go with it on one. If it came to my PS3 that would be cool too. I just want to see some PS3 love. Sucks it's playing catch up.

Streaming on consoles would be awesome

I could see it doable on the PS3 but having it on the Wii would make it amazing as well. I'm interested to see how that will turn out
