Netflix Says Streaming Only Option May Hit U.S. This Year
After already having launched such an option in Canada
by Karl Bode 06:31PM Wednesday Oct 20 2010
Netflix recently launched a standalone broadband video streaming service that wasn't tied to their DVD rental service. The catch? They only launched this in Canada but not in the United States -- where Netflix last year oddly claimed there "wasn't much interest" for this kind of service. Apparently Netflix has changed their mind, and told attendees of their earnings conference call today that they're testing such a service now, and "if our results are as strong as we think they will be, then we will look to start this offering later in this Q4." Netflix recently upgraded their streaming service to 1080p with 5.1 surround, albeit first for PS3 customers. All of these are nice features, assuming U.S. consumers aren't too self absorbed (to use Netflix's CEO's words) to notice them when they launch.

1080p

1080p, IT'S 1080P!
I'm anxious to see if this comes close to vudu HDX quality, that would blow them out of the water. Streaming only option for cheap would be exciting.

Nintendo Wii users only can watch 480P anyway. Should they wait too?

I mean devices that can currently do 1080[like blu ray players]
eventually future incarnations of the wii will be able to do 1080[should they have to wait because netflix doesn't want to support them?]

But for $1 more/mo you can watch about 7 or 8 DVDs too

But for $1 more/mo you can watch about 7 or 8 DVDs too, based on round trip mail times, assuming you have a DVD player in your house. And many of the DVDs will be available sooner because of the deals that Netflix signed with studios to delay "instant watching" availability.

You're exactly right. I suppose it is an appealing offer for some people, but $1 doesn't break the bank for me...especially considering there are MANY shows/movies that aren't available for streaming (yet).

Streaming only should be more than $1 cheaper. At any rate I have ZERO interest in getting DVD's in the mail.

You really need to learn to read. Netflix's new deals delays the DVDs, not streaming.

Re: But for $1 more/mo you can watch about 7 or 8 DVDs too

It probably will be >$1 cheaper. Canada's streaming only option ($7.99) is $3 dollars cheaper than the package that includes discs ($10.95).

We don't have a disc rental package in Canada

Discs cost $8.99, not $10.95. So $7.99 is (ignoring exchange rate) $1 cheaper than discs, not $3.

Unless you think there is a $10.95 disc option in Canada, which there isn't. Netflix doesn't do DVDs in Canada.

nice!

the current 720p hd they have on select content looks pretty good already on my 1080p tv and 24" monitor. i have the cheapest tier + the blu-ray option if i want full-on quality but 1080 streaming and 5.1 sound is awesome too.

I think streaming only has already started

When I go to netflix now it says unlimited streaming for $8.99 a month and $1.00 extra for dvds by mail. Looks like its started.

Re: I think streaming only has already started

I checked my account and I don't see a "streaming only" plan. They offer one DVD-at-a-time and unlimited streaming for $8.99

That is weird. I just signed up for my plan 2 days ago and my $8.99 plan includes DVDs and streaming.
The regular price of the 1 DVD out at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is $8.99 (plus any applicable tax)

You are currently on this plan:
1 DVD out at-a-time
+ unlimited instant watching
$8.99 a month

2 DVDs out at-a-time
+ unlimited instant watching
$13.99 a month

3 DVDs out at-a-time
+ unlimited instant watching
$16.99 a month

4 DVDs out at-a-time
+ unlimited instant watching
$23.99 a month
Did the rate you quoted include Blu-ray? But that adds $2/mo

Tengo unas preguntas...

•will it be unlimited?
•what resolution will be available?
•will Netflix increase their streaming selection?
•and pricing?

That's the big issue for me. I mean, if the movie/show I queued on DVD is not available for streaming, then there's no point.

already started

I just happened to sign up yesterday for netflix, and it was $7.99 for streaming only.
It says so right on the front page of Netflix today too...
Research a story before writing it?

That ad says $2 extra for unlimited DVDs/mo.
So that would be $9.99/mo. I signed up 2 days ago and am paying $8.99/mo for unlimited DVDs and unlimited streaming.

The Deal

The streaming-only plan is being test marketed in certain areas. As others have noted, it's already visible on the website in areas where it's being tested.

It's actually more expensive than the current deal. So, the cheapest plan is $7.99 + $2 if you want DVDs by mail also. The old plan was $8.99 for the same package. Blu-Ray is additional in both cases.

Existing customers will be grandfathered in and will still be allowed to change their plans up or down in the old pricing structure.

Re: The Deal

If they up the price for current customers to $9.99 a month for one disc-at-a-time, I'll probably just knock it back to streaming only at $7.99 a month since I get a lot more use out of the streaming than I do the discs.

More streaming titles needed

I'm on a 30 day free trial. They need more newer movies. Most of the newer movies they do have are actually STARZ movies. The video quality of those is not that great. Make 720p standard and offer more movies and I might bite.

Now $8.99

Now $8.99/mo for just streaming. With DVDs it's $9.99. So basically, there's a new option that costs the same as the old one but without DVDs...

Re: Now $8.99

Clear your browser cache and cookies. I was only seeing the $8.99 until I did this. Now I see the $7.99 deal.

Hope they don't raise the rates I just started my 30 day trail last week. Not good if they start increasing it now.

Deal

Still not a bad deal considering the price of pay per view. And they make it real easy to receive and mail back DVD's. I can average 4-5 DVD's a month on the single plan.

Dumb Luck

Just by dumb luck I singed up on Monday for the $7.99 mo Unlimited streaming only. Had No Idea this was a trial, they never said it was. Now I am going to order my Roku since they are down to $59 for the sudo HD of 720p and $79 for actual 1080 version you can't beat it. I was waiting for Boxee but they will never touch that $59 price point.
