Netflix keeps expanding broadband delivery...
(old news - 03:47PM Monday Dec 08 2008)
tags: Video · competition · business · hardware · alternatives · content
While traditional TV operators really have nothing to worry about just yet when it comes to Internet TV, one company cable and telcoTV execs have to be keeping an eye on (as they scurry to implement metered billing) is Netflix. In addition to the recent launch of the $99 Roku streaming player, and the Netflix streaming functionality of the Xbox 360 and LG and Samsung DVD players, Netflix today dropped streaming functionality on TiVo Series 3, HD, and HD XL owners (see Engadget impressions, Zatz Not Funny impressions, and this video).

ISP Caps

Why should the ISP's be afraid? They would just modify caps on the Internet.

the first ISP to work out a deal with Netflix would be genius. basicly a good thing would be that connecting to netflix would not impact your caps.

Re: ISP Caps

And thus breaking network neutrality. It would be the beginning of ISP's going for a walled garden approach and they would slowly drag us down into another AOL situation.

Looks like Netflix is struggling in economy & technically

»news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-101184···1_3-0-20
Web video-rental store Netflix has laid off 50 technical specialists, the people who typically do most of the trouble-shooting for customers with tech issues, such as struggling to connect the service to their laptop or set-top boxes.

This may be strange timing to those customers of Netflix's streaming service who have experienced a drop-off in streaming quality during the past month. In the past several weeks, some Netflix customers have complained about poor video quality and long buffering delays.

Last week, Netflix said engineers corrected the problem. While some customers continue to see shoddy streams, Netflix does appear to have licked the malfunction for most customers.
Looks like both the economy and scaling the operation for more customers is taking a toll on Netflix customer quality.

Re: Looks like Netflix is struggling in economy & technically

Sort of makes sense, they probably over-hired in anticipation of the Xbox launch and needed to cut back. While at the same time, when launching the new services, you see a spike in complaints as the kinks get worked out. 50 employees, that's like the seasonal staff at a Macy's.

I've had good a good experience so far with the Roku on a 3.0 DSL line. I don't watch much until after 9PM, and I get full or near full stream quality on everything I choose. Whether that lasts ... who knows. I do know you'll need an 8 to 10 connection for streaming HD, and the selection will be far worse than what's available now. If you like TV shows, indie films and Starz, netflix streaming can't be beat for the $$ if you're a member, and even if you're not, at $8.99 for the whatever unlimited plan. Something tells me this will all change soon enough

You didn't read the full article. Netflix is cutting the 50 helpdesk tech jobs do to the dropoff in service calls from customers as the product improves. They are still adding technical positions in other departments, they just don't need as many phone support techs.

PS3 and Wii?

Wasn't there talk of also making software available for both the PS3 and Wii?

PS3 might make sense. But the Wii doesn't have a high def connection to a TV - it uses composite connections only. So, unless the Wii upgrades the hardware, I don't see that happening real soon.

I doubt Wii not having HD is a reason why it wouldn't have it.

Wii can do component at 480p. But that's it as far as I'm aware.

Unless it just came out, the Wii has no COMPONENT connectors. It only has composite.

Well, they sure did a good job hiding it on their web site. I'll have to check and see if my niece & nephew have component inputs on the TV they will use this for. I ordered it std from Walmart and it will only come with the composite cables. After I find out what they have, I can order the component cable somewhere.

These guys have NetFlix streaming working to the PS3 today, and claim that they'll have Wii support in 2009.

Great service!

Since Netflix recently added Starz lineup to the list of available Watch Now movies I've used it quite a bit. No reason for me to pay $4.99/movie to my cable provider when I get unlimited movies via Netflix.

And as I stated months and months ago, the number one reason for metered billing is to curb 3rd party content offerings such as Netflix.

No TiVo

Too bad I don't have a TiVo since I'm on DTV. I'd try it out on the xbox but that thing is just too damn loud to enjoy a movie with it running.

Are ISP's behind the Netflix issue?

It will be interesting to see if the streaming issues that Netflix customers are having are directly related to certain ISP's.
I have a Ruku box since it's launch, and I use it nearly every day. I have never had a streaming problem, period.

"Netflix today dropped streaming functionality"

Dropped? Do you mean "began" or "offered"?

Guess I'll have to upgrade my Series II soon.

Almost interesting...

Recording (aka downloading) to TiVo I'd like (for watching later, which [my] TiVo is really for). Streaming is, I guess, better than nothing, but this won't get me to upgrade my current TiVo to one of the latest models, and as far as I can tell it's only "live streaming" right now.

I suspect Comcast is throttling already

My mom's Comcast connection has been very problematic when trying to watch movies on her Roku box. My Roku has a Paxio connection and there are no problems or limits (except the Roku player does not stream HD yet).

The more popular these streaming players get, the more yelling we'll hear about Comcast and their customer-hostile policies. Maybe if we all yell loud enough we'll get some changes in their attitude.

ISP not keeping up.

Living in the country and having a cable modem service provided by Suddenlink, I've had little success at streaming my Netflix movies through my XBOX 360 these past two weeks. I subscribe to the 2 Mbps download service and I can watch the first 10 minutes of a show without any problems. After that though, Suddenlink throttles my download speed to 300 kbps making any viewing impossible.

After spending 3 hours on the phone today with Suddenlink, they have confirmed that they throttle the speed when someone is downloading too much.

Would love to find a company with a consistent, uninterrupted download speed.

Netflix, not just the net, add a VOD & HD-VOD channel

My thoughts is Netflix should stop fighting cable companies and, sort of, join them instead. Offer it online & through the ROKI unit, if desired, but also offer it as a VOD & HD-VOD service over cable.

Will you be alone, I don't think so, but you'll be a choice and if you make the deal great for the carrier, & the quality great for the customer, it can be a home run for you and for cable.

Offering up a new VOD cable channel is a way that gives you the content choice without limits to the customer while not hurting cable, possibly resulting in their service costs going up. Maybe Netflix would offer up the channel and an influx of content at either $3.00/flick to as little as no additional charge if, say, the customer has a "3 or more movie by mail" deal. The carrier could add a $1.00 surcharge for SD or $1.50 for HD, per flick ordered, for the price of carriage. Customers would be able to enjoy movies in HD quality for as little as $1.50 a flick. Since these are rentals, DVR functionality would be disabled but the movie could be watched over and over again for up to 3 days.

Now, no more cap hassles and I don't have to worry about my HBO or Nick at Night being in danger. There are customers who want their HD-VOD but also those who want Nick at Nite, HBO, etc. I can just envision it now, Netflix VOD on channel 130 or HD-VOD on channel 530. Blue-Ray would still be quite desirable since its bitrate is still even better at about 25-30Mbps. With people out there buying up 65" HD displays, there should be a noticeable difference in quality so I don't see Blue-Ray sales getting hurt in this. Please, Netflix, make it a reality.

Re: Netflix, not just the net, add a VOD & HD-VOD channel

too bad cable companies like Cablevision will play hardball and probably not make deals with netflix. i have to say I played with the netflix service last night on my tivo and it works very, very well. Looks really good too. Much better than anything Cablevision VOD was able to offer... when it worked.

Any netflix plugin for GBPVR yet?

For those using GBPVR as your HTPC software, is a Netflix plugin available so I don't have to connect yet another device to my TV?
