Netflix Streaming Hits iPhone, iPod Touch
Free app with Netflix plans $8.99 or higher...
by Karl Bode Thursday 26-Aug-2010 tags: Video · business · wireless · alternatives
Netflix this morning announced that they've developed an app that will allow both iPod Touch and iPhone users to stream video selections from their instant queue. You'll need to be a Netflix customer on a $8.99 or higher to use the free application, which will work over both Wi-Fi and AT&T's 3G network (just in time to run smack into AT&T's new 200 MB and 2 GB caps). Progress made on movies or shows while at home is saved for use within the app, allowing you to finish watching your program while on the go. Users can also manage their instant queue from within the app, but only for streamed programs (not DVDs).

AT&T is going to LOVE this!

Now that they've eliminated their unlimited data plans, the next obvious step is to encourage massive amounts of data consumption.

People are sheep. Mobile web access is officially the new crack cocaine of the new millenium. Never thought people would willingly fork over extra cash for something like this.

(When I say extra cash, I mean their stupid additional data buckets)

For other carriers that do the exact same thing.

You misstated the facts, or at least left out one extremely important detail. They eliminated their unlimited data plans for new customers.

I have unlimited data and will hold on to it until they rip it out of my dying hands. (they allow grandfathering of unlimited plans in case you are not aware)

Wrong. at&t does nothing when your contract runs out, you just go month to month with what you had before.

Re: AT&T is going to LOVE this!

But if you want that shiny new carrier exclusive phone at the subsidized price, guess what? You're going to have to renew your contract.

So you have a choice; either buy your future phones unlocked from a third party or from the carrier at the retail (non-commitment) price, or kiss your "unlimited" data plan goodbye.

I'm running into this exact scenario right now.

WRONG

My contract is up. I purchased a new iPhone 4. They grandfathered my unlimited plan, it just required that I agree to be a customer for another 2 years (with my grandfathered plan)

You state the opposite.. I suspect its because you THINK that is what will happen. Grandfathering of the unlimited plan for current customers is well documented and I challenge you to show proof otherwise...

Re: AT&T is going to LOVE this!

I was trying trying to upgrade my iPhone via the at&t Premier website (so I can keep my corporate discount.) When I looked at the plan options a couple of days ago, I didn't see it. But I looked again this morning and it is indeed there just at the very bottom of the page: the option to use my existing $30 unlimited data plan.

Funny how how far down the page you gotta go to see it. (as if they don't want it to be easily seen.)

I apologize.

Per dictionary.com (for grandfather)
quote:

4. to exempt (something or someone) from new legislation, restrictions, or requirements: The law grandfathered all banks already operating at the time of passage. He was grandfathered into the pension plan.

No need to be pedantic, you know exactly the context I used the word in. So, let me simplify since you're at least pretending you can't understand what I meant...

If you have unlimited plan, get a new iPhone, you have the option to keep that plan if you are current customer. You are just required to sign a 2 year contact.

You are so wrong it is laughable.

They will allow you to keep unlimited data.. PERIOD. You stay month to month unless you upgrade to a new phone. If you upgrade to say an iPhone 4, then you can still keep the unlimited plan, but you are required to sign a contract that you will be with AT&T for 2 more years.

I'm so confused... all these things are public, documented knowledge... 5 minutes on google could have found everyone the correct answer.. YET.. here we are having this discussion...

At&t can take away your grandfathering anytime it wants to. They can come out TODAY and say everyone is going on the new plan. There is NOTHING you can do about it. You are grandfathered in at THIER discretion not yours.

Correct, they could pull the plug on it with a sunset date. But if history repeats itself, it will likely be quite some time before ATTM throws the current crop of folks with lovely grandfathered unlimited data plans under the bus. It wont' be happening any time soon since it's very bad PR and ATTM knows it plain and simple.

In general though, I'd say that consumer knowledge of the features that are grandfathered to current customers, upgrading techniques, etc. are simply not common knowledge and change too often. Pop over to Howardforums.com if you want to see questions that are not always cut and dry regarding changes to plans/service/features. It's not wonder that everyday folks (not tech/phone geeks) can't keep it all straight(!)

And I am suffering from that ridiculous cap which Karl has hit on the head

I do NOT use my iPad for Netflix or large downloads or anything that is even remotely big

I check email and news quite a bit and maybe play some NON-ONLINE games....but every month I have come close to that 2 gigs and I do NOT go over b/c I intentionally do less the last few days

It is a freaking crime that they have pegged only 2 gigs as their top limit and expect people to pay EVEN MORE above that

It is AT&T's way of screwing its own customers and getting more fees.

OK.. but what does that have to do with the incorrect facts that you were spitting out before that I rebuked?

Answer = NOTHING

You're reacting to me pointing out that you were incorrect by speculating as to what AT&T might do in the future with their plans. Why would you react like this? Because it is a knee jerk emotional response because you know you are incorrect.

So again, go back to what you stated about not being able to keep unlimited data.. you are incorrect.. still. If you think I'm wrong about unlimited data.. prove it

or have another emotional outburst..

If AT&T takes away Grandfathered Data Plans from customers who are still under contract that's essentially giving those millions of customers a way out of their contact with no penalty.

Why couldn't the VZ's and S' of the world simply hold a press conf. one day announcing that they have GSM (although i hate GSM's call handoff process+voice quality) up and running and that GSM Devices e.i. iPhone are now welcomed on their network.

Bell Canada, Verizon D.R. (now called Claro) did the switch as well as so many other carriers around the world have. When will VZ & S do this?

I've given up on an American TMobile iPhone.

I agree wholeheartedly. My user preferences certainly won't be the same as yours or the next guy on the same carrier. It's funny how many folks who rant in forums like this one stating they simply 'must have unlimited data' can't stop themselves for a moment and think of what other possibilities exist. Oh, you know, the kids who 'want' a shiny new iPhone 4 but have no clue how to really do anthing except talk/text (ROTFL).j

I wouldn't think of using a non-smartphone now, especially since I'm on a plan I like (with smartphone data exception) and have access to wifi 98% of where I go on a typical day.

Here's we go again...

Believe it or not not everyone uses the devices the same way, even after having them for awhile (several years). Many folks could care less about streaming video and/or audio (myself excluded). Hence, they have much lower data usage patterns. You honestly don't think the folks behind the scenes at the big carriers haven't already thought about this and have used hard data to help determine price points(?) Yes, there will be folks who at some point end up going over their 200MB data plan. It's unavoidable. However that's why they can upgrade to a higher one (or one that has not yet been rolled out).

Do you mean that "unlimited" data plan that has the 5GB limit on it and has for years?

So they may not be able to charge you more per your current contract, they can certainly terminate your account because you exceed that "unlimited" restriction. Or they could encourage you to move over to the new plan to avoid termination.

Yes, that 5GB "cap" (ahem) that ATTM has so consistently policed (?)

It's a lot like the Comcast 250GB "cap" that all of their customers don't seem to experience.

As usually with this stuff, YMMV.

Expect stalled streams as the commuters start to stream The Office episodes on the train ride home...

One thing that is starting to bother me on the Netflix horizon is that the streaming titles are more than LIMITED. Are you finding that "AVAILABLE ON DISC ONLY" in the series you Add Instant selection? I was watching Family Guy and 8 episodes of 13 were available, while the remaining 5 were DISC ONLY.

Smells of either copyright issues or something else. Frustrating.

How long before they inject commercials in the stream...(those black screens seem awfully ripe for some subliminals...)

Most viewing will be WiFi and not 3G, so caps on wireless cellphone plans will mean little to most users. It is a good deal for Netflix customers. They can watch on their PC; iPad; Touch; & iPhone.

The 3G did have a few buffer issues, but after pausing it for a 30 seconds or so, and resuming the buffer issue went away.
The netflix video quality on the 4 is absolutely astonishing, and no it does not check appear to check for bandwidth streaming quality.

Will not sign up for a AT&T new contract

Appears that the other carriers have not followed AT&T lead at eliminating unlimited smart phone data usage. This will be one other reason to sign up with Verizon Wireless when they finally get the Iphone next year. (Verizon will tier 4G data usage).

For the Iphone, the requirement to switch to a tiered data plan in order to tether is ridiculous. They are making a grave mistake.

iPod touch data rate

With ISPs having caps (The Concast 250GB cap for example) I wonder how much data is consumed by streaming a 2hr movie to an iPod touch.

I am fortunate to have the unlimited ATT on the iPad, but the touches in the house are going to add to the local cap. I imagine at some point the ISPs are going to have a run in with Netflix as their quality and offering picks up.
NF continues to announce new content for streaming which is certainly welcome, let's not forget, there's no additional charge for this, I get it free with the $9 single DVD service.

UPDATE - I corrected typo yes, "250GB" - thanks.

You'd have to do a HUGE amount of streaming to even cut into the Comcast Cap which is 250GB (about 250,000MB), not 250MB, as I'm sure that the iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone use pared down datarates/quality when compared to the average PC/Mac.

Smaller devices, Slower CPU's, and Lower resolution screens all come into effect when redesigning applications to a mobile device. Finding the best compromise between Quality, Speed, and Power Usage is always a concern. It was also said above that 43 minutes of streaming was about 210MB. I'm sure I don't need to do the math in how much streaming you would have to do.

Re: iPod touch data rate

Thanks, 250GB, yes, typo.
So a 2Hr iPod movie about 500MB give or take. I agree, not a bad amount of data.

Device increase?

With all of the desktops, laptops, gaming consoles, tvs, and now ipods, I hope Netflix increases the number of streaming devices from 6. I'm already at my max now.

Survey: to those who use iphone over 3g instead wi-fi and

need unlimited data plan

Tell me where you use the Iphone? Where you use it most often? Where you use it least often? Subway? Beach? Friends's barbecue patio? What's your climate moderate or tropical?

I can't imagine using Iphone regularly for video streaming on the walk in my home city Chicago during cold winter I'd rather stop by Starbucks for a hot cup of coffee but there already have free wifi to use

Re: Survey: to those who use iphone over 3g instead wi-fi and

Don't have the iPhone anymore (thank God) but here's my data usage for my Evo. 1.7 GB with 12 days left to go. Should be in between 3-4GB by the end of the cycle.

I do web browsing, moderate YouTube viewing (in high quality) and I steam Pandora and Sirius XM. I'm a delivery driver and stream audio most of the day at work. Plus I use the GPS a lot, and I believe some of the info comes from Sprints data network as opposed to the GPS satellites. And personally, given to option, I’d rather do things over 3G then Wi-Fi. If I’m paying for data access on my phone I want to use it. Besides I don’t circulate many places that have free WI-FI. I don’t stay at hotels or stop at truck stops and I think coffee is utterly disgusting.
