Netflix Targets Broadband Users
Gears up for video-download launch in 2004
(old news - 01:50PM Tuesday Apr 06 2004)
tags: Video
On-line film rental shop Netflix has become sort of a cult geek favorite, and the company hopes that popularity will branch into a new broadband download service. CNN reports that the company is looking to deploy a new video-on-demand service in 2004, as well as considering getting into the video-game rental business. As we've mentioned several times, on-line VOD isn't a viable business model yet; companies are simply planting flags and gunning for name recognition before the concept becomes popular. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is obviously aware of the risks involved in branching out; "We're playing it a little defensively, because if we lose the digital download market, you'll soon be hearing about the rise and fall of Netflix," he says.

won't happen anytime soon

ISP's need to increase download speeds and GET RID of caps.

Even if these movies were compressed to 50% DVD quality, they would still be ~2GB+. For the average cable user, that is 1/15th of their monthly download limit, just for 1 file.

For most DSL users who have 1.5mbit or less, this file would take a while to download. Even 3mbit would have to have a few hours.

I don't see VOD happening anytime soon.

The average Bit-rate on full quality DivX is quite low. I wonder if there is a way to stream a DivX file.

It is possible to stream DivX, but it is a CODEC that is meant for archival. Things get UGLY when you try to stream it - instead, look into NSV. It is a wavelet compression CODEC (VP3.x and VP6.x) that makes extremely small files and is streamable rather easily with the same quality. (And it is free)

Now why am I bringing this up?

Too many "video on demand" places are too busy trying to imitate - not innovate. ;> Newer, better, faster means are HERE and are FREE no less...

there's already services which offer downloadable movies (although I can't find the link) for $2.99. You download the movie, hold it for 30 days and can watch it for a 24/hr period. Then again, if you have 3mbit lines, you can stream movies at a very high quality with divx/xvid compression.

Check out the community on »www.winamp.com
Look for the Shoutcast forum, then click the link that takes you to "Nullsoft Streaming Video". That should answer your questions for the moment - but as you play with it, you will have more. Extremely beta stuff, but I have been successfully playing with it for over a month now.

Yeah, this cap BS is going to hamper deployment. Also, the compressed video is OK...I guess. Kinda reminds me of a mediocre(sp) VHS recording...but it's a start.

Me either, not until download speeds are raised and they stop the invisible caps.

Very Interesting

Strange because just yesterday I was reading an article about Online DVD Download companies and the thought came to me if Netflix would ever switch to that model.

The answer is definitely yes. But the success of something like the greatly depends on the MPAA and individual ISPs.

I love Netflix and am a big supporter. But as the previous poster said, it may be a while before they can implement this.

Re: Very Interesting

It won't be long before the pirates find a way to crack whatever encoding the Netflix people use, then start redistributing the films accross the typical networks. What will be interesting is to see if the MPAA will cooperate with such a plan, there is considerable risk involved from their viewpoint. I'd be very supprised if they supported such a move.

It can't be any worse than the amount of people cracking the CSS DVD protection, and releasing the full DVD as a torrent file. I'll bet that better than half of the DVD torrents you find came from NetFlix Customers.

Yes, but they will have a much better selection to chose from now compared to most local rental stores that only have the latest releases on DVD's, or at least this is the case in my area.

Re: Very Interesting

I'm currently a Netflix customer. I can have 8 DVD's out at a time, which generally gives me about 40 DVD's a month (with mail time). This service costs $40 a month ($1 per DVD).

I'm building my library now, copying every movie I rent to DVDR. After 3-4 months, my old movie collection should be complete, and I'll switch to the cheaper, $20 a month service.

While I don't make them available on P2P, I do make them available to friends on my private FTP site. I'm afraid I don't see the difference between someone renting the movie from netflix and ripping it, or downloading it from netflix and ripping it.

Re: Very Interesting

What you say makes perfect sense. But im guessing the MPAA is already working on a solution.

What you're doing now is not that much of a threat. The biggest threat to their profits comes from easy online access worldwide.

Then again, my assumption can be wrong.

I could be much happier with them. I signed up a week and a half ago and have yet to receive any of the movies in my queue. Also, I can't figure out how to add games to it. I'm going to have to cancel my account with them before the 2 week trial is up, without even having anything out of them.

They suck!

The system was hit with a virus on the day of launch. I have received my movies. In fact, I just sent one back to them today.

I would suggest you at least stick with them for a while, then of course if your experience doesn't get better you should cancel.

Re: Cheap & Better Alternative

Well, I just tried to cancel. I called their number and selected 1 for customer support, but got forwarded to the executive office answering service

These guys seem to be an example of how not to do things. Nothing works. Their support service, their queue system, their search system, etc.

Edit: in my 5th attempt, I finally got a hold of someone and canceled my account. I had to press 0 instead of 1. It seems that their prompts are being routed incorrectly (like most of their web site).

I may look into them again in a few months, if and when they get things straightened out. In the mean time, I can not recommend them.

Gameznflix.com is a great company. I have gotten all my movies and gamez on time and very easy round trip mailing for a low fee of $18.50 Netflix can't touch that. I am sorry you are having problems, but this is a new company and they have a few bugs to work out. Fortunately, you are in the minority as I know many people that have signed up and received their games and movies. Good luck. Mac

They have at least one. When you put "series discs" in your queue, they will not ship them out of sequence. I had Voyager Season 1 in my hold queue as soon as it showed up in a search (I checked daily), then as soon as it moved to the rental queue I moved all discs to the top. They received one of my titles back on the release date for Voyager, but they shipped me something from like #7 in my queue, and disc 1 of Voyager went to "Very long wait.." even though the rest of the series was "available now". Same situation for 2 weeks, so I emailed them. They replied that people want to watch series in sequence so they will not ship out of sequence. I finally had to remove disc 1 from my queue in order to get them to start shipping the others. When season one of Deep Space Nine released last year, I had the same sort of issue, but they didn't insist on shipping series in sequence. I had disc 1 as #1 in my queue the day it became available to add to the rental queue, and it took almost a year before I got the disc, even though it was at the #1 spot in my queue the entire time and for about 6 months I was on the $30 5 out plan!

Re: Cheap & Better Alternative

GreenCine has solved that issue by letting you choose which discs, if any, you want to view in a specific order. They call it a "personal series" and you can create as many of them as you want within your queue. By default, titles are shipped in the order they are available unless you add it to a personal series.

Gameznflix could learn from this example. Actually, they need a lot of work with their queue. Currently it doesn't even show availability of titles in it. The only thing it shows is a list of your titles in order. You can move titles throughout your queue, one position at a time by pressing up and down arrow graphics. As you can imagine, this takes a lot of time as the page reloads every time you move a title one slot.

One flaw that they did have (when I tried them last year) was that they really seemed to only cater to mainstream viewing. Everything else was secondary. It was frustrating to see them have only 6 out of 8 titles in an anime series.

Another flaw is their practice of limited which popular titles are available to you based on your past renting history. The more you rent, the harder it becomes to get the most popular titles. There have been independent studies showing this, and they have even confirmed it themselves. They claim that they do this in order to give the people who rent less often a chance to get the more popular titles.

Edit: yet another flaw with Netflix is that their web site doesn't work properly with Mozilla.

I know that some people here have invested in Gameznflix. By your's and eco's tones, I'm thinking you are among them. I've talked about them in other forums and everyone else I talk to are having the same experiences that I am. From what I'm seeing, I'm in the majority and you and eco are in the minority

Hopefully they'll get things straightened out.

I admit that I'm an investor, but I am also a happy customer. I really did receive my movies on time. The site has some issues, as do most when they first launch. They're working daily to fix the problems though. They already made it where Firefox users can access the site, so it's evident they're working around the clock to alleviate any issues.

I respect your opinion stet, but I do think you should stick by what you said and give them another try in a month or so.

I intend to. I hope they succeed as I like the idea of renting games and movies at the same time. I also like their catalog of anime titles (something Netflix is lacking with) and music video titles.

They must be desperate

First, I doubt they are going to be offering full bitrate movies for download as the time for download (and even streaming) would require a rather robust and reliable connection. I do not see this happening when consumer broadband is based ona UBR philosophy combined with an oversubscription mentality on a carrier's network.

Movielink does this, but the streaming is of a movie with lower bitrate (higher compression and lower quality). I would never pay to see a movie with less-than DVD quality when I could go rent it for a couple of days, make several copies, and resell them at will (example, not actual scenario).
