Netflix Tax Goes Live in Pennsylvania
Netflix has formally begun charging consumers a tax for using services like Netflix. State lawmakers have extended the state's existing 6% sales tax to cover online streaming services in order to cover a $1.3 billion budget shortfall. In addition to streaming video and music services like Netflix, Spotify and Hulu, sales tax will also now be applied to music, e-books, apps, online games, and ringtones. Magazine and newspaper subscriptions, as well as digital versions of the Bible will be exempt from the tax. Chicago began charging a similar 9% tax on Netflix and other streaming services last year.

Not right..

This is a terrible tax. It doesn't even have any provisions that say something like "1/4 of the collected taxes go towards building Pennsylvania municipal fiber network." This is just a cash grab. Don't even get me started on how works of fiction are exempt!?! grrrrr

If there's one thing PA politicians can't get enough of

It's other people's money.

Thanks PA, now fix my internet

So, you've been charging me for 30 years a tax on my phone bill, now you're charging me a tax on my Netflix, and I'm sure you've taxed a hundred other places, and the best I can get is 3mbps DSL? Thanks. Glad to see that anyone that we vote in is a corrupted screwball that takes money from any corporate donor as long as it's not for the good of the people.

Ya know, my school district's teachers are going on strike, my roads are falling apart, you can't even pick up my kid at my house to ride the bus, you don't fund anything, anywhere, you can't get people off welfare, you can't get good paying jobs, you can't keep intelligent workers, you can't do anything that helps out anyone under 65, yet you can somehow find it in your power to pass more taxes on cigarettes, gas and netflix?

Go F*** Yourself PA Politicians.

This state has absolutely ruined itself and the only thing it has to blame are the scumbags in Harrisburg. Congratulations!

I'm confused

Can't you just change your address to a non PA address and avoid the tax? I assume netflix will be collecting the tax based on the users address, so just update your profile to show you are not in PA?

Texas

We've been paying 8.5% sales tax in Texas for years. Don't believe the conservative BS line about reducing taxes. They just wav my to shift the tax burden off of themselves

Magazine and newspaper subscriptions, as well as digital versions of the Bib

does it count porno mags as exempt?
Just the bible? what about The Quran? torah ?
Do athiests get an exemption?
It's not that tax shouldn't be applied to internet purchases, but the exemptions that clearly show bias.

Take note from the chicago thread..

Killroy said " Easy fix There is an easy fix for this. Netflix stops streaming to Chicago "

Well I guess the same should be said to the entire state of Pennsylvania and any other state or city that follows suit.

I don't want to get political but, These cities and states are becoming ridiculous with there laws, bylaws and new money grab schemes, mostly in the disguise of taxes.( Also: red light camera scams "Chicago") If these states and cities officials would take a minimum 10-25% pay cut ( Sorry government worker if your city or state population shrinks so does your take home pay you don't get a raise while every one else goes broke) a lot of states/cities would be better budgeted. Example Chicago's City aldermans make 115K a year! there are 50 alderman in Chicago ( the most of any US city) The national average wage is $46.5K why are alderman getting paid almost triple what the average American makes. There salary should be caped at 65K IMHO and be raise or lowered dependent on how the city finances are doing.

If this was the current pay scheme they would not need to over tax there residents. If your state or city politicians want to receive A raise then actually come up with ways to raise business and add better than minimum wage jobs in your state/ city. But Hey, this is just My 2c.

Exactly what are they taxing?

You have no physical property, you don't even get to OWN anything. You are paying for access rights, nothing more. This would be like taxing a parking space. The taxes Netflix pays are already part of the fees for that company to exist and factored into the fees they charge their customers. Magazines and DVDs and CDs and even books I can see, though normally books are tax free since we should be encouraging reading. But without a physical item that you own, and keep in perpetuity (not like Steam games where you 'own' the access on that account forever, or at least until Steam closes up), how the heck can you justify the tax for it?

This is not a proper tax and should be forcibly revoked by the state members during a plebiscite.

Why fault Netflix?

Why do I see several comments that Netflix should boycott PA? This tax costs Netflix nothing, and since I went there, taxes of any kind cost companies NOTHING. If Netflix were to decide to not service PA it would then cost them money. Why don't people stand up and understand tax money comes from individuals not companies. If YOU don't like the tax lobby and have it changed. I know this would take time and effort so I guess it will just be easier for people to pay the tax and then complain about it.

Taxylvania...

PA politicians never met a tax they didn't like... :-/

They just implemented an additional $1 per pack cigarette tax just about a week ago.

Two years ago they socked it to us with a .28 cents a gallon gas tax, giving us the highest gas taxes in the country.

The tolls at the Delaware Water Gap used to be .10 cents. Then they jacked it up to $1, a 900% increase. And all to maintain one miserable little bridge.

Just like every other toll and tax around here- it's lining somebody's pocket...

Believe me, there's a reason people are fleeing this state like rats deserting a sinking ship. :-/

I would cancel service

I would rather go without than pay yet another tax. I refuse to feed the tax man on anything if I can help it.

$1.3 billion deficit

I wonder how many times cutting $1.3 billion of government crossed the minds of the politicians? Actually allowing the people and business of their state to decide how best to spend their money themselves.
