Netflix: What Recession?
Streaming successes surprise even Netflix...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 27-Jan-2009 tags: Video · business · alternatives
Tipped by RadioDoc See Profile
While many companies this week were busy announcing layoffs, Netflix indicated a 45% jump in earnings. The company's already successful DVD rental service was buoyed by their recent broadband video partnerships, which allow the carrier to offer streaming services via Xbox 360, Roku, TiVO or BluRay players by both LG and Samsung. In a conference call with analysts, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated, not too surprisingly, those who use broadband streaming rent fewer physical disks. That spells trouble ultimately for physical media -- though Hastings says physical disk rentals still won't peak until at least 2013.

Re: Netflix streaming rocks

I'm refering to the Streaming only
I don't really give a care about the mail rentals

If I want to see a movie I want to see it now so if its not available for streaming then I'll likely just buy it

but if I just kinda would like to see it then I'll have it sent to me if I can't stream it

I understand. It's still a rental...unless you purchase the movie.

Well then, I can purchase the "right to watch it". I don't have any recurring fees to pay and I never have to return it to the rightful owner of the purchased license.

Philosophically speaking (or...er...typing), you don't take anything with you when you die, so everything is a rental.

Personally, I've never bought a movie in any format. I've only rented online or at a local Blockbuster/Hollywood-type video store. I rarely watch a movie more than once. Now with Blu-Ray and HDTV, I enjoy seeing an older movie on one of my HDTV movie channels at home and I always try and get the Blu-Ray versions if they are available when renting at a store.

But I am not a stranger to the Netflix model as I use Rhapsody music monthly service. I have an MP3 player that I use with the service, too, that allows me to take my rented songs with me to play on the go or in my car. While I rarely do it any more, I am able to record any of the songs into a format that I can permanently save. I've done this with all of my old favorites, but for new music and listening to custom radio stations and such, I just listen and save a few that I really like.

To a point. I do both (3-out plan + Roku) and the Instant selection becomes scant fairly quick unless you have quite a varied taste in genres and don't mind 2 and 3 star movies constantly.

Another thing is that come the weekend - prime time I'm guessing - streaming rates drop leading to less than stellar picture quality even with 10M connections and good ping/speed test results.

Best to watch your disks on the weekend and stream during the week if possible.

Re: Netflix streaming rocks

Well for the most part I've been rewatching shows that I ether didn't pick up on due to not noticeing it or to see it without commercials or having to press the 30sec skip on my remote

there's a few shows that I only vaugly remember for long ago that I rewatched only to find that they wern't as good as I remembered or that I had totaly missed the story back then

its good and there are shows and movies that I hadn't given a shot before but I can just take a look and if I don't like it no loss

on my 16/2 connection week or weekend its fine

I'm sure the selection will grow and I've already gotten my money's worth

Well I am sure BlockBuster has had a wonderful time too. Why? Renting a movie is by far the CHEAPEST form of entertainment. Either by mail or the local video store, it's like 4 or 5 dollars tops. Make some popcorn, and you just had family time for cheap. This compared to 8 dollars a movie ticket, fuel, and food. So while in a massive recession, people look for alternatives. Once things pick up, I will doubt these numbers will even out. In the mean time, enjoy the money Blockbuster and Netflix. May the good times roll.

Re: Not for long

I continually contemplate canceling DirecTV and using only an over the air antenna, Netflix, and the internet. Most things I watch on TV are available on network OTA channels and the rest of it is really garbage. Between work, going to school, and hair-brained business ideas I don't have a lot of time for TV either.

I enjoy getting whole seasons of shows on DVD and watching them in one shot. My wife an I enjoy Weeds but we don't get Showtime. We'd much rather watch the DVDs and we end up getting through them in a weekend. Sometimes the DVDs take too long and I've downloaded whole seasons to get them the minute the season is over almost.

I really see television and cable/satellite providers declining. The days of watching what they give us are slowly ending. The internet opens up a whole new means of entertaining yourself. Newspapers have already seen this and I think we'll see more and more new "networks" spring up online and skip the traditional delivery methods such as cable networks.

That's really funny. That's exactly what my fiancee and I do with Weeds. Love the show, and we just blow through a season in a day or a day and a half.

My wife and I just recently cancled Comcast, and are going OTA (used very little, mostly for news) + Netflix (including streaming over Xbox) + internet. It's been incredibly nice so far (been doing it about a month).

Actually, it's a little jaring to go over to somebody else's house when they have the TV on. I've become re-sensitized to commercials. You don't realize how annoying they are until you don't see any for a few weeks.

Quoted for truth. Right now I'm on OTA, Some Net stuff, and Netflix, plus my old trusty ReplayTV.

I hardly ever see an ad, now. The OTA has them, unfortunately, but I record most everything and skip the commercials---- and Netflixing DVD seasons of TV shows and watching them sans ads is well... awesome.

Re: Not for long

I too am thinking about ditching DTV when my contract is up. I really watch mostly movies. Just this Sunday I watched three movies from Netflix' site. Never had a problem with it and I'm on Comcapped.

With a lot of the TV shows are now available on DVD and through their View Instantly portal, I'm really wondering what I need to spend $60/mo on TV service. I mean I love it, and the one time I'd really miss it is for sporting events...which is pretty much my main viewing interest other than film.

I love Netflix' service...its great having my media pc hooked to both tvs. Excellent value for the $15/mo considering the amount of movies I like to watch.

Same here. My wife is now asking why we didn't do this earlier... (you just can't win).

OTA + TiVo + NetFlix = screw Comcast. Even adding DirecTV at $40/mo we're still about $40 ahead.

I prefer Amazon's Video on Demand model, where they charge $2-4 per rental instead of a monthly subscription amount. I like movies but I've never rented enough (or had enough time) to make a subscription to Netflix worthwhile.

Until Amazon has HD, I'll stick with netflix.

Also, the monthly subscription amount is well worth it for me since watching three movies you get your $ worth.

Yep, that's correct. The new $8.99 ($9.99 with blu-ray) plan is working out just fine for me.

The wife and I can have a movie night once a week, plus if we want to watch more movies on demand we can.

Just get the $8 subscription with Netflix, gives you unlimited streaming, then buy a Roku, since they are about to add Amazon VOD support to it, so you'll be able to stream both Netflix HD and Amazon from the same little box.

And the pay-per-movie model works if you are only watching 2-3 movies or less per month on average, but if you rent 5+ then a subscription system that lets you do all that for $10 (the 1 DVD at a time plan) works out better.

Well in terms of entertainment costs, Netflix / Blockbuster are by far cheaper. I mean 20 a month for unlimited movies or about 4 dollars each at Blockbuster, you can't beat it. I mean, to go see a movie in the theater is 8 bucks a person + food if you get that. Entertainment prices climb by leaps and bounds from there

Who is Netflix trying to kid? Non-essential entertainment was the first luxury I cut when the shit first started hitting the fan. And streaming services isn't something that I have the time, money, or inclination to fight with the ISP about.

Re: Live in denial much?

The numbers don't lie. If they are announcing an earnings increase that means they are making money. Back during the depression the movie industry never faltered because people would still find a way to go the theater. Same thing here. Hard times call for a means to escape the stress of daily living and renting movies does that without paying the premium at the box office.

Meanwhile,
I have ditched my Cablevision DVR's (2 X $6.51 + $0.24 remote chg.ea/mo + $9.95 Service per/mo.), and cancelled my IO on-demand service($10.95 + Family Cable per month). For equipment, I bought a Ruku box ($99.00)Tivo HD($12.95/mo.{$299.00}), and rent 2 cablecards for $2.00 ea. per month.
Net savings: $31.85 per month.

As to streaming quality, I use Verizon Fios 20/20 service w/the RUKU box and have not had one single streaming issue ever. The quality is near DVD for SD and even better(real 720p) for HD content. It takes about 6 seconds for an instant movie to begin streaming, and Netflix adds new streaming content nearly every day.

NetFlix?? is the streaming...that good??

I formerly subscribed to Netflix, then Blockbuster
made offer one couldn't refuse for renting dvd's
I switched during wars between BlockBuster
trying to 'buy out' Netflix.
The NEW streaming seemed and sounds attractive,
BUT appeared questionable on quality of the picture. HOW GOOD THEN IS THE PICTURE?? ~ Anyone?? ~
Is it worth the $8 or $20 bucks monthly?? [what $8 package??] How about the LIBRARY of movies?? Is it up to date?? [which was a past disappointment with Netflix, too far behind in new movies, new releases and availability]

I love online movie rentals.

I had a free trial netflix account but they didn't have the movie I wanted so I canceled it. Now I just prefer iTunes because I may only occasionally rent a movie each month so I only pay for what I get. All in all I think these movie rentals are definitely a great idea. Once streaming hi def (blu ray quality) videos becomes popular I think thats going to be the media of choice for people who rent movies.

Netflix over xbox360 is good however,

System capacity seems not enough because at times I only get 1 to 2 bars.

Renting from the library is fine, but the availability of a particular video depends on your area and the popularity of the library in question - some titles could take weeks to receive.

However, if you don't watch many movies to begin with, then your response in this thread is moot.

$16.95 for 3 DVDs out at a time and unlimited streaming via my Roku is the best solution for me as I don't have cable/Sat and am not able to receive a descent OTA TV signal.

Has anyone else had issues with the streaming quality lately? When I first signed up about a month ago, the quality was awesome. Streaming HD and usually always 4 bars on nonhd content. Its just a monthly late fee...

You can watch one movie and turn it in...weeks later.
Or you can watch 3-at-time, rotate them in and watch over 16 movies a month, for flat fee.

I went back to Netflix when they lowered their rate (It was $16 for 2-time). So now if I watch 2-3 movies a month, $3/movie isn't going to kill me (since theaters are at $10.50 a ticket!).

But when I look at my TV rates going up ($744/year for FiOS TV without pay channels), I can see folks ditching TV for movies (no commercials! BluRay!) and OTA. I am considering this route. $81/yr for dozens of movies is a deal.

But I Just want NetFlix to BUY GameFly and make it one fee-all you can rent!
