| disrupt? I'm not sure why Karl always wants to disrupt traditional TV. I like many shows that are on TV, but want some different/additional legitimate distribution outlets of which NetFlix maybe one. Hulu, google, amazon, etc. all have a chance to be others, hopefully at a netflix price point. | |

| Re: disrupt? But it's not disruptive if it is a legitimate outlet for the content producers and owners. Far too often here I see disrupt=destroy!!!! some people believe that that will make content much cheaper... it won't. However you may end up with a choice of who you pay, and how when where you get to watch it. | |

I had a discussion with someone, who feels netflix should offer a tier system. The 8 buck tier you get ads before the content streams [not during the show]. You also get the limit of 2 streams per home.
Then maybe at 15 bucks a month, you get ad free streams, up to 4 streams a month, and access to "new releases" [Hollywood would have to remove the 90 day delay that netflix has before this could go into effect. Then maybe at 20-25 bucks a month you have up to 6 streams per home and access to "adult" content [porn]. Granted there are may sites that already stream free porn, so this might be a reach.
I can't see Netflix streaming porn as an issue, as they stream UR/NC-17/NR content already. Stuff that borders on porn. I dunno if a tier system would work, though it would depend on what they were offering. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? These companies need to remember they are providing a luxury service.... a want, not a need.... also, if people feel miserable because they are being squeezed heavily on every side, well, there's always the other choices.... not to pay at all.

They should remember that. Businesses remember that just fine, however most consumers to date haven't flinched when it comes to absorbing rate increases. Until that trend shifts, don't expect anything else to change either

If they continue to increase rates, people will make choices... like you said, doing without is about the last option, so paying necessities, then pirating entertainment will grow.
The higher they price, I believe more piracy grows. Of course, we're trying to have piracy placed in the same category as terrorism or genocide, but still... can't stop the signal. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini

If people really like the shows, other networks would wanna be able to license the show, this way Netflix gains leverage on saying something along the lines of: "You scratch my back, i ll scratch yours..." - Or: "I license my show to News Corp, if News Corp offers me good deals on licensing their content".

With cable that can be a problem, with fios most likely not. BTW I have zero problems with NetFlix and I have a 10 down 2 up cable connection. I know neighbors down the street that don't get the steady speeds I get, why I have no idea except maybe there is a cut in the cables somewhere down the street.

That will get the ISPs slapped down by the Net Neutrality Nannies faster than anything so it will never happen. While I think that case needs to be tested, Netflix can certainly negotiate content delivery that doesn't violate so-called NN. Mirroring their content to an ISP-local cache, or routing traffic over strictly private links would do the trick.
NN Ninnies will cry foul, but they'll have no case.
I don't claim to know the $ figures involved for their private studio efforts versus guaranteed bandwidth - the former may be insignificant. But I'd at least like to know that Netflix is working on behalf of its customers, not against them.

To me the actors aging wouldn't be a problem, but I could understand them not wanting to spend money on building the set. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils

I've got an assortment of devices (bluray players, rokus, PCs, handhelds) that all stream Netflix. The kids rarely watch TV anymore... and I'm glad. They have none of that angst about watching stuff religiously at certain times that I remember as a kid.
In terms of quality, I never expected full 1080p or anything approaching bluray quality. However, I usually get stuff at better than DVD quality. I figure things can only get better with time. Meanwhile, I will continue to get new releases on bluray by mail. (Ironic that netflix almost killed themselves last year when they tried to separate their services. LOL!) -- My Site
