Netgear Buys Westell Consumer Gear Division Will Take Over Hardware Deals With Verizon, Cincinnati Bell Tipped by stunod2002
stunod2002 directs our attention to the fact that Netgear has acquired Westell's customer networking solutions division for $33.5 million. Westell says they'll retain "customer relationships" from its HomeCloud brand and product line, but all other consumer platforms will now fall under the Netgear umbrella. More specifically, all of the hardware that Westell provides to both Verizon and Cincinnati Bell for VoIP, video, and broadband services will now be under Netgear management. Netgear insists the deal accelerate our service-provider revenue growth and strengthen our market position among North America telecommunications operators."

| Re: Because Frontier now has much of Verizon's old Do they currently sell/give/rent Westell modem/routers to customers? If so, they'll probably soon be doing the same with Netgear stuff.
As a former Verizon tech support agent I have mixed feelings about this. Say what you will about the quality of the hardware itself, but the Westells were pretty easy to walk people through. Netgear's interfaces are not so simplistic, in my experience. On the other hand maybe they'll get less calls where the modem's the root of the problem (say what you will about the UI, the hardware's pretty solid at least in my experience). Ah well, at least I don't have to deal with it anymore.
Now, if they bought out Actiontec with the intention of gutting the company, I'd be frikkin' cheering. I hated their FIOS routers. If I ever move to a FIOS area, I'm insisting on an ethernet connection so I can use my own damn router... -- Think Outside the Fox. | |
