Netherlands Tops Netflix Streaming Speed Country Rankings
by Karl Bode 08:30AM Monday Dec 16 2013
Netflix's latest ISP Speed Index has been updated with the latest data from November. Not much has changed in the ISP rankings from last month, other than Time Warner Cable and FiOS jockeying for that sixth place position. After lauching Netflix in the Netherlands three months ago, Netflix notes they have has taken the top spot in terms of the fastest streaming countries. "With a country average of 3.16Mbps the Netherlands takes a firm lead compared to the other nations in the index," notes Netflix. "No other country crosses 3Mbps, but runners up Sweden and Denmark come close with 2.83Mbps and 2.8Mbps, respectively."

OpenConnect Performance

This seems to show a continued decline in performance in the US across multiple ISPs since Netflix moved to their own CDN (OpenConnect) vs other CDNs

Is customer performance the mechanism to drive free peering for Netflix?

If you look at the numbers, this doesn't make much sense...

Re: OpenConnect Performance

Peering saturation which is pretty sad given I find a lot of Netflix videos being served to Verizon these days is via Level3 and LLNW.

You're just trying to confuse the issue with facts!
You know that's not allowed on the internet, when talking about broadband.

I think that is exactly what Netflix is trying to do. If they really wanted to use their own servers they could choose to buy high quality transit links to avoid the peering problems but they choose not to.

I have found myself using Amazon Prime during peak times now instead of Netflix.

Re: OpenConnect Performance

But at times Amazon can be congested too. (though they add capacity ASAP, so it is unlikely to stay congested)
I've even received a "server is too busy" message from ComCast on demand and streampix now and then.
The difference being Amazon and Comcast's business model allows the to think- More usage> pay for more capacity, while Netflix's low fixed price means> convince other to pay for more capacity.

This is not clean data, this is Netflix PR spin.

Netherlands Tops Netflix Streaming Speed Country Rankings

Something's odd here. According to PC Magazine at »www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,24 ··· 7,00.asp , it is FIOS, not Cablevision, which is the fastest American provider. PC Magazine reports average FIOS download speed is 34.5 mps versus Netflix's reported 2.20 mps. I would characterize that as a significant and confusing discrepancy. Explanations, anyone?

Re: Netherlands Tops Netflix Streaming Speed Country Rankings

It's in the article, ie what spin the author/editor has chosen
" We've said it before and we'll say it again: FiOS is the absolute fastest nationwide broadband service. The only shame is that the company has no plans to expand beyond its current locations. "
In one paragraph, he calls FIOS nationwide, yet laments they won't be expanding beyond Verizon's (now very limited) current footprint. (and not even 100% of that)
Using different numbers/covering different dates, you can pick your way through the stats to support almost anything

One question is what exactly is Netflix measuring.

They make it pretty clear what they're measuring, but it seems so many people fail to comprehend simple English.

What is the point of your post? That part isn't even clear.

The point was that Netflix's numbers were totally different from the PC Magazine tests. How could that be?

I think you mean that Netflix is not measuring ISP speeds or end user connection speeds.

No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that it's strange that Netflix's numbers are so completely different from the PC Magazine numbers. I don't have an explanation for that discrepancy, as you appear to erroneously believe. Instead, I'm LOOKING for an explanation.

Inaccurate title

Netherlands Tops Netflix Streaming Speed Country Rankings That Doesn't Include All Countries Served By Netflix.

Where's Canada, which is probably currently Netflix' second largest market?

Re: Inaccurate title

They dont show canada because of the piss poor speeds, ( also they ajusted our bandwidth speeds to fit into the caps we have)

the 3 were complaining for the whole hour canada was on the index
