Network Neutrality Sock Puppets For Hire
Disinformation and spin on demand...
by Karl Bode Thursday 14-Aug-2008 tags: legal · business · Politics
CNET's Declan McCullagh has an interesting article on a shadowy lobbying group named the Law Media Group (LMG). The group works for clients like Comcast and Microsoft ghost writing pseudo-objective editorials for the nation's largest papers and websites, and forging bogus consumer-centric coalitions tasked with supporting client positions with farmed statistics. Comcast used LMG heavily during the network neutrality and throttling debate, while Microsoft has used the group to attack Google. While astroturf (bogus grass roots and fake consumer advocacy) is nothing new, LMG is a particularly secretive player, and McCullagh's article is a great read for anybody interested in K street and disinformation/propaganda.

Disinformation?

I can imagine how they are playing this act.

"Hello boys and girls this is pink the pig. He represents the ISPs like comcast and AT&T. Pinky the pig loves money, just like the ISPs. Without Net Neutrality, Pinky the Pig can take the money from companys such as Microsoft and Google, and while you would think this would just lower your monthly internet cost; Pinky the Pig really likes money so he will just raise your monthly fees because he really likes money and since he is getting even more from the big corporatins he will want EVEN MORE money...so he will have to rasie the rates for broadband access. Plus he will also decide how fast or slow your traffic will goto certain sites. So, that ma and pa shop that you buy all your yarn for cheap will load slower than the big corporations sites that sell the same thing for more! Boys and girls, don't you all love Pinky the Pig?"

Now I have a strange feeling to shoot a pink pig....bbl

Lawmedia Group isn't new. It has been around for some time. It is just a new name for "Law and Media Strategies" - another Epstein company.

$9,250 distributed across 7 organizations, from 4 separate employees, qualifies as a "big time contributor"?

Come on now.

The real number in the current election cycle is at least $47,600. You have to dig deeper than just the 1 link:

You have to look at each individual, because to beat election laws, they contribute thru more than 1 organization and/or job title.

Epstein: »www.campaignmoney.com/political/···cycle=08
$19,100

The other 3 come to at least $28,500 (more when digging deeper). And this doesn't include money funneled thru spouses and children's names(a std dodge).

Guillermo Meneses: »www.opensecrets.org/indivs/donor···uillermo
$2100

Jeffrey M Sharp $250

Joe Velasquez »www.opensecrets.org/indivs/donor···z,%20joe
$26,150

google why dont you build a network in canada

WHY dont google build a net neutral network in canada.
THEY GOT THE CASH, we all would jump on board and it be perfect way to put the nail in the coffin of whats that best buddy
bell canada aka MICROSOFT.........
you'd get all rogers and telus and everyone jumps to new provider that is open and true to net neutrality , would not traffic shape......

Doesn't Canada have foreign ownership restrictions on telecommunications infrastructure? Considering that Google Inc. is an American company, this could be an issue.

As you know, I've been watching the NN thing unfold over the past year or so. This weekend, in fact, will be the one-year anniversary of the TorrentFreak article.

From this perspective, my layman's observation of Google is this:

They're really interested in preserving a neutral network. It got them where they are, and even though it also helps their competitors, it keeps every ISP on the planet from picking a "preferred search engine" and throttling all others.

Google is even open to becoming an ISP to advance this cause, but they're currently not excited about the prospect. In other words, chronoss2008, I think they'd be willing to listen to any proposal you guys have.

To put the situation into the context of publishing, I think that Google wants to publish telephone and business directories, maps, placemats, and indexes. But if paper manufacturers start putting the screws to it, Google is willing to make pulp, too.
