Network Solutions Defends Holding Domains HostageStill apparently a security 'feature', not anti-competitive endeavor... ( old news - 10:41AM Monday Feb 18 2008) tags: competition · business · networking · domainsIf you recall, back in January Network Solutions found themselves under fire for purchasing and holding certain domains for five days after they're searched for at the company's website. The tactic allowed the provider to keep shoppers from doing business elsewhere. At the time, Jonathon Nevett, Vice President of Policy at Network Solutions, issued a statement saying that the practice wasn't anti-competitive -- it was a security feature: ...we have implemented a security measure to protect our customers. The measure will kick in when a customer searches for an available domain name at our website, but decides not to purchase the name immediately after conducting the search...You are correct that we are trying to take an arrow out of the quiver of the tasters. As you know, domain tasters are the largest Front Runners. [...] Some folks may not agree with our approach, but we are trying to prevent this malicious activity from impacting our customers. ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) recently investigated a number of front-running complaints, and found more often than not, the complainants generally misundertsood the domain business. While SSAC did not formally investigate Network Solutions, they did have a chat with Nevett (see this transcript, about halfway down), who continues to defend the practice as their response to front-running. | If they wanted to deter domain tasting They wouldn't allow any sort of refund on domain names! If you buy it, it's yours for the duration you selected. Check your spelling before submitting the order because once you click "Submit," it's yours. If they keep making the business financially viable for these domain tasting fleas, they'll continue the domain swapping game since it costs them only pennies a try.
I also think the article here at DSLR misses a key point of the article: quote: The report, brought before the ICANN board in New Delhi on Friday, did not examine a controversial practice by domain name seller Network Solutions LLC of grabbing names that people search for on its Web site but don't immediately register.
There you have it: they didn't even consider the real issue at hand. Nobody ever accused them of actually registering the domains. They just hold them hostage for a week so you can't register them anywhere else. That's what the original complaint involved. -- John M - Cranky network guy

100% agree. Domain name tasting is wrong. You buy it, you own it. This practice only encourages it. -- »www.queenofcyberspace.com/usenet

| Never Use Registrars Domain Name Search EnginesFirst lookup up with a DNS request (nslookup for Windows users). Then back it up with a WHOIS search to see if the name you want is registered. Then select the registrar of your choice to register the name with.
This is how I have always done this. I never have trusted registrars not to be running some sort of scam to hold a good name hostage or even worse, flat out register it if it is a really good name.
Everything to do with internet has sunk to the lowest common denominator. Worst that dealing with used car salesman. User, buyer, operator beware.
Which brings me to another pet peeve of mine. There are way too many resellers out there. They are all selling the same backend services for any one of just a very few providers. This yields less and less differentiated services available. It is quickly becoming one size fits all with no real meaningful competition differentiated by services and capabilities. Just a few resellers slugging it out over price differences of only a few pennies.
The little guy is hosed yet again.
Check this out and see what I mean, can not even find a shared web host that allows outbound connections (without use of CURL etc. to go through their proxy). Why do you suppose that is? I believe it is because they are all (most anyway) just resellers of the same very few backend provider(s).

| Re: Never Use Registrars Domain Name Search Engines Great advice NOYBNOYB. Unfortunately 95% of the users on the internet are not going to understand what or how to use nslookup. I can't believe the management of Network Solutions keeps on doing this crap! I guess they realize that 95% of the users on the internet are not goign to be savy enough to realize this is going on and the rest of us are just going to bitch in forums. Too bad a news media outlet hasn't embraced this. Network Solutions new slogan should be "We steal it before someone else does!" That pretty much sums it up. | |

| Just checking availability of a domain... A week or two ago a friend of mine went to Network Solutions website and checked to see if a domain was registered. It was not registered. The next day he went to another registrar and tried to buy/register the domain. He was told that the domain wasn't available. He went back over to Network Solutions and tried to buy/register the domain - and yup he got it!
This really sucks! And he ended up getting 3 years with them, so I guess they achieved what they wanted to achieve.
I cannot believe this is allowed!

| Fight Fire with FireEverybody go to Netowk Solutions right now and enter hordes of bogus searches.
»Who uses network solutions to register a domain?
Just searched for domainnamehostagetaker.com from Network Solutions, it is available. Immediately went to GoDaddy and searched for the same name, you guessed it, already taken.
Then searched for domainnamehostagetakers.com at GoDaddy (notice the added 's' this time), it was available. Went back over to Network Solutions and searched for domainnamehostagetakers.com, it was available. Then went back over to GoDaddy and searched for domainnamehostagetakers.com, you guessed it, already taken.
Network Solutions = Network Scum-Bags. This is worse than SPAMMERS. Glad I am not one of their customers. And now never will be.

| Re: Fight Fire with Firesaid by brawney :How can this be legal?? I don't know. But when you think about it there is huge potential here for fraud with Network Solutions, or anyone for that matter, having the ability to hold domain names they have not paid for and registered.
For example they could hold a bunch of prime names to force anyone who wants the name to register it through them and prevent them from being registered through the competition.
Network Solutions = Network Scum-Bags
Anyone who is a customer of Network Solutions should immediately take their business elsewhere.
Transfer your domain names, hosting and other services elsewhere.
Boycott Network Solutions scum-bags.
