| Scum This doesn't sit right with me. This prevents the consumer from purchasing the domain name at a different provider if he wishes. For instance, if he doesn't like how network solutions is run or finds a cheaper price he can't go somewhere else. Simple solution, don't use network solutions for anything. Don't even search using them. Starve them. | |

| Why? Network Solutions has bought and paid for them. The fact that every time the monopoly on .com registrations comes up for renewal it automatically gets handed to Network Solutions is a good indication of that. The best workaround is TO NOT use NSI for domain availability queries but rather one of the other providers. The question I do not see an answer to is this activity taking place from www.networksolutions.com queries or from www.internic.net queries? I guess I need to do some testing and see what is up. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. | |

| Re: Contact ICANN I stopped using NetSol for ANYTHING, even looking anything up, since 2002. The funny thing is that I always suspected something like this would EVENTUALLY happen.. I was always afraid to look for domains until I knew it was time to take it.. and to be honest, I'd never use their site to search for anything either - whois or just to see if something was available.
This company needs to go, and now.

NOT WAY, this is what Bob Parsons of GoDaddy termed domain kiting. They have NO out of pocket fees. Network Solutions and others allow scammers to register a domain and then cancel it within 5 days with no fee (not even the 20 cents to ICANN). They are then allowed to re-register the same name for yet another 5 days, and so the process begins. Free domains with a simple automated register / cancel script.
I'm all for the 20 cent fee being mandatory at the time of registration. Charging even this 20 cents will make it unprofitable for scammers to keep re-registering these domains.

It doesn't really work that way but it is the same process they use when doing transactions. They "float" the domain for a few days. Technically it's a client hold process, testing the viability of the client's status.

| Network Solutions is a terrible company A friend had 2 domain names registered at Net Sol. He switched ISP's and his old email address used by Net Sol was lost. He never received emails regarding his password being changed on his Net Sol account.
Net Sol make it almost impossible to renew the domain name which went into the "awaiting renewal or deletion" status. 3 times he faxed off the required info to get his password and update his email address. They kept sending back information on the wrong account. You cannot get a real person and he ended up loosing one domain, the other went into a 30 day hold where Net Sol wanted a premium to get it back. Nothing like holding the customer hostage!! The Net Sol web site plainly said it was a 30 day hold, which in itself is wrong.
Eventually after more like 60 days, not 30 the domain became available so he purchased it from a much cheaper (and better) registration company. There they had to do some manual intervention because even though Net Sol said the domain was available they still had some kind of hold on it
I would not use Net Sol to register anything.

| ICANN looking in to this - BUT could take a couple years
ICANN says they are aware "domain tasting" or "front running" is a problem. And they are going to study the problem - which could take months to a couple years. »ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jQ6j···8U2GJPO0
In a draft report issued this week, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers outlined key issues for a committee to study further and craft recommendations. A final report is due after a public comment period closes Jan. 28.
Don't expect any immediate relief. The committee, the Generic Names Supporting Organization, could take months or years to review the matter, after which ICANN's board still would have to vote on any changes. Here is the ICANN report on "Domain Tasting": »gnso.icann.org/issues/domain-tas···an08.pdf You can comment on their report here: domain-tasting-2008@icann.org And see other comments here: »forum.icann.org/lists/domain-tasting-2008/ -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page

| Can see it both ways Having several domain names to myself, and done domain registering for others, I can say that I'd see this both ways.
From the negative (which seems to be the majority around here): Yes, they squat on the name as soon as you search it, preventing other registrars from being able to register it if you find it some place cheaper/better.
The positive: I've had to research domain names for companies and individuals who want a particular name, only to find that one has already been taken (and is in actual use). So, I start brainstorming alternatives, and I will search every one of them and then make a "alternative List" of the ones that are available and the ones that are not, so when I go before the client (business or personal), I can give them options, and if they suggest some obvious options I already though of, I can tell them straight off if it's available or not. Now, with Network Solutions doing this, I know that in the time I'm discussing options with a client, no one else can "take" the options I am presenting so when the client picks one, I can go back and get it knowing it's going to still be available, thanks to Network Solutions policy.
So you can see this both ways. I think a lot of you are seeing it from the personal level where the domain you want is initially available, and therefore the lock out is unfair. But for those who are trying to get their second/third/forth choice or need to discuss options with business management, this service might be good for them.
-- "No one will believe you solved this problem in one day! We've been working on it for months. Now, go act busy for a few weeks and I'll let you know when it's time to tell them." (R&D Supervisor, Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing /3M Corp.)

| Terrible Company I had an email and hosting account and several domains with Netsol that I decided to move because of the cost. The move pretty much went without a problem except once the domains and email became active on the new server, I started receiving a significant increase in spam. From just about nothing to around 60 a day. I don't know if Netsol dropped a dime on me or if the new company just wants me to buy a spam service or something. Anyway Netsol is way over priced. | |

| I Was A Victim To This Scam
I did a search for a domain through them (Bad Move On My Part) for a domain that was available and after a few days when the Customer was ready to purchase the domain it was taken. I e-mailed the "New" owners and they wanted $100 bucks for it. I balked at paying that much and decided to wait out the year and hopefully pick it up after they let the domain expire. To my surprise however a few months later the domain was once again "available" so this time I snatched it up for a few bucks at another Domain registrar. Below is a sample e-mail communication between me and the fake owner:
