Should show up over next few months...
(old news - 09:42AM Monday Oct 15 2007)
tags: business · bandwidth · cable
Charter has been testing a 16Mbps/2Mbps tier in Texas for some time, and customers in multiple markets will be seeing new speeds and prices over the next few months. Charter Vice President of Investor Relations and Communications Mary Jo Moehle wouldn't officially comment on the new speeds, but Charter's techs have confirmed the information to our users. These are the current speeds and prices for Charter broadband, though they do tend to vary depending on how competitive a market is:
•Charter HSI 3.0: 3 Mbps/256kbps : $39.99-$54.99
•Charter HSI 5.0: 5Mbps/512kbps : $51.99-$59.99
•Charter HSI 10.0: 10Mbps/1Mbps : $69.99-$79.99
Click for full size
Charter's 3Mbps tier will be bumped to 5Mbps, the 5Mbps service will be upgraded to 10Mbps service, and the company's 10Mbps tier will be boosted to 16/2Mbps. No official word on pricing -- though Texas 16Mbps trial participants say Charter is charging them $69.99 for the service bundled with basic TV, and $79.99 without TV.

Some users say they're being told they'll see the new speeds in November, while others are being told they won't see the new speeds until February. Users in uncompetitive markets are being told they'll be paying $54 for 5Mbps, though they are being offered a $39.99-for-3-months discount deal if they threaten to cancel service.

Finally

Good to see they are finally updating the speeds. They always seem to lag behind the others when it comes to speed. I haven't really had too many issues with them. I hope i am in a area where they update the speeds in November.

I think it's only in areas where there is competition from some competing service. All I had to do is ask them to match the UVERSE price, and they said they could give me 12/1 with powerboost for $41.95 a month for 12 months.

Invisible caps also raised

Invisible 1GB/month cap raised to 2GB.
Invisible 2GB/month cap raised to 4GB.

However, the invisible 10GB/month cap remains in place since anyone who downloads more than 10GB/month is a copyright terrorist who needs to be reported to Homeland Security for processing.

Charter has no caps at all. Stop spreading lies.

I just downloaded about 90 GB of data in the past 4 days or so, downloading off-site backups to a machine that recently had a hard drive failure. I don't know what caps you're talking about; Charter may lag behind the competition, but the one area where I haven't had an issue is in caps.

That assumes your connection can muster that much bandwidth!
Charter might be improving despite their financial woes.

People get wrong info

I'm 100% posistive the $54 for 5 meg is WITHOUT TV. Right now 5 Meg is $50 with TV so why dump 3 Meg and RAISE prices? If 5 Meg is the new 3 meg then the price should be LOWERED. And in areas like mine where DSL is available why would anyone get 5 meg for $54 when I can get 6 meg naked DSL for $48?

Im all about faster speeds

Im happy to hear about the faster speeds as its a step in the right direction for charter. It does seem they should try and fix other issues that they have. I guess they are working on that too though. Charter is slowing turning things around in my area which is always a plus.

Man,
I sure hope so!
Paying $42.99 now for freely upgraded (5/512) 3/256 speed.
Have always said $40 is MORE than enough for internet. No matter the speed!!

Yes,
I'm an ultimate cheapskate, for the most part.

NO CAPS

I have downloaded 3TB every month for the last 4 months on my 10meg connection with NO slowdown or capping. Charter is the best ISP for no caps as well as Verizon FIOS. Extreme speed with no caps is great!

Maybe they SHOULD institute caps. 3 TB is WAY too much. You are obviously downloading illegal stuff. It's people like you that make it hard on the rest of us.

Re: NO CAPS

Actually it was using muguito. If you read up on muguito, you will see that it is not illegal at all. It hammers fraudalent websites by reloading images and banners on them to deplete their bandwidth to take them off the web. I also downloaded a few DVD's which is only like 20gb a month. The rest was all muguito.

Re: NO CAPS

Wait, so did you just admit to a form of DOS attacks? Seems illegal to me to use a program to try and take down websites you don't happen to agree with, regardless of what those websites are. If those websites aren't operating illegally, I don't think you have the right to interfere wth them, despite their product.

Seems kind of vigilante. It seems like this has been discussed before here (in the form of a screensaver that attacked known spammers while idling)...

It sounds like DDOS but it is not at all. It just continually downloads an image or page banner of the website in hopes of the web host shutting the site off because of high bandwidth usage. It is not DDOS by any means. If you would search "muguito" you would see what I mean.

Ah, so. I see it's part of some Artists Action 419 or something. I also see they've dropped using it since Sept. 07. Or maybe they just want people to think that.

If they have these Caps then I would see a letter. In the last 45 Days I have downloaded Legal Videos and Software which tallied over 10GB. Have yet to see my letter from Charter. This is not the first month I have done this. My 10MB is rock solid. I get 1.1MB/S all the time.

i haven't a problem yet, i just upgraded to the 10meg the other night, i can tell you it has improved alot. I'm seeing 10500 and about 1.2 on average. before i upgraded from the 5meg package i noticed better speeds with that as well. on the 10meg package i tried a few months back i was getting about 8000-9000 download on average and only about 800-900 upload on average. Greer has problems from what i hear but maybe they will get better as time goes.

16MB!! Yikes

Bring it on I'm ready, especially if it is a boost without any cost. I'm already paying in the tier that was shown.

16meg is going to be slightly more than 10meg, no final price but expect at least $10 more. It going to be available in Jan in Missouri.
