Maximum speeds of 16Mbps/2Mbps
(old news - 06:39PM Wednesday Oct 31 2007)
tags: bandwidth · cable · Charter Pipeline
Though Charter wouldn't comment to us that new tiers are coming (as PR people without authorization are wont to do), Charter phone support keeps informing our users when that the company will be rolling out a suite of new tiers from November through February. Obviously the more competitive markets (usually that means FiOS is deployed) will likely be upgraded first.

Charter's 3Mbps tier will be bumped to 5Mbps, the 5Mbps service will be upgraded to 10Mbps service, and the company's 10Mbps tier will be boosted to 16/2Mbps. No official word on pricing -- though Texas 16Mbps trial participants say Charter is charging them $69.99 for the service bundled with basic TV, and $79.99 without TV.

They told me November 2nd

Called in yesterday for the Victorville/Hesperia area of southern california and a guy checked with a supervisor and confirmed that November 2 would be their official date.

I can't wait, as long as the price is the same as what i'm paying for my 10mb plan.

*edit...I guess I didn't need to post this, I didn't realize that was my post they linked to in the article.

Re: They told me November 2nd

Charter upgraded me from 3 to 5mb yay. ZTMIKE, you are lucky with the speeds you are getting. Based on the speed tests »/archive it looks like Comcast is giving burst on both download and upload. For the average user pushing photos and downloading apps, this would be GREAT to have.

Is hesperia related to the Lake Arrowhead area (as far as upgrade dates)? Not that it really matters at the moment, I'm back in the stone age while Charter re-wires the burned out neighborhood. Something tells me upgrading customers up here isn't the highest priority.

Thought it would be a nice present to see 16M speeds when I finally get the electricity to turn my computer on... (posting from elsewhere)

Re: They told me November 2nd

I believe they are in the same market as far as Charter is concerned. We have the same channel lineup, and we all got our channels realigned on the same date, but I don't know what they will do as far as offering internet speed upgrades. I guess the best thing would be to call them and see.

Comcast?

Where the hell is Comcast at, at getting new faster tiers out? I would upgrade if they offered at least 1mbps upload.

Upgrading from 384 to 768upload is not worth the 10-15 dollars price hike.

Re: Comcast?

The 8Mbps download is satisfactory. The 768kbps upload is still good, but something more comparable to verizon's FiOS would be nice. 1-1.5Mbps upload would be a whole lot better.

I have Charter in Worcester, MA. Looking forward to the speedboost, I'll post when I get it.

Is there going to be a map showing the upgraded areas?

Comcast is investing in sandvine instead

also maybe when Comcast gets that completely implemented throughout their networks they will then give up an upgrade only to tighten sandvines grip on all traffic thus making the upgrade pointless.

Why does every thread about anything internet always revert back to Comcast?

ComcastRick was just accused, yesterday, of anytime something comcast is discussed that he brings up the TOS and Servers... Here is an example of a Charter thread and now we go off topic to something about Comcast?

Does This Affect Business HSI?

I'm wondering about that, as I use Business HSI.

I'm inclined to think not, since you have to sign a contract. Mine doesn't expire until May, though it's just as well since there's no DSL here.

I Called

I called yesterday and found out that Cali would be first week of Nov. (was told the 3rd), and the east coast (or Upstate South Carolina) would be Jan-Feb sometime. from what the CSR told me East coast would be pretty much last.

Re: I Called

I'm kinda confused..

We haven't had 3MB service for a while. We only have 5MB and 10MB service.

If we already have 5 meg and 10 meg service, does this mean there will be no upgrades in Worcester, MA?

Got a letter from charter raising the lowest tier to 5Mbps from 3Mbps. The top end is still 10 Mbps, but the price went up!

I got the same letter from Charter. So, I'm dumping them before the price goes up.

Re: Madison, WI

I'm also in Madison and I haven't gotten a letter yet, even though I just got my bill.

I talked to a lady at corporate CS today, and she said 16 meg would be here around the first of the year. She also said that the price of my 10 meg would DROP by $10. Making my current (pre-tax) monthly bill of $139.96 drop to $129.96 when 16 meg comes to town.

How would this work for me?

I have there 3mb plan but on the 5mb preview until Jan 08. But the thing is a month or so ago. I called in and told them to keep me on the 5mb plan. I didn't want to go back to the 3mb plan. So, would I be upgraded to the 10mb service?

I'm wondering the same thing. Don't know when my 5Mb preview runs out though.

Probably won't upgrade to 10MB if it's not a free upgrade anyway, as I'm to cheap to pay much more than $40 a month for just internet. My life isn't so hectic that I can't wait 2 minutes to download an album or maybe 15 minutes to download a Linux distro, or something.

5mb in Birmingham

I just signed up for Charter online today for my new place in Alabama and the lowest tier they offered was the 5mb tier. It was only $14.99 a month, too for stand alone for the first 6 months.

They've come a long way...

Since 3M/256K, but can they hold a stable speed this high?

They've come a REAL long way. When I started with them, I was on the 256/128 plan! Granted, haven't come as far as some others, but I've been happy with them.

Think they've bumped me already.

I was on the 10MB plan until last month. I dropped it to compensate adding HD to my bill. My speed never changed after going back to the 5MB plan and I was just waiting to see if they had actually changed it. My bill came and it shows I'm on the 5MB tier but I'm still getting the same speeds as before. (This speedtest is about my average even when I paid for the 10)

New Charter speeds this week

Very interesting ,Charter has provided Cable TV but not Internet service in my area.About three weeks ago the local paper ran an ad for Charter that cable Internet would be offered soon ,but no date listed for deployment.I have not seen any updates or ETA for deployment of new service, they sure like to be sneaky about things don't they.Still waiting to see what speeds they will offer!
