story category New Dell Netbook Has Integrated 3G
Though it wasn't announced as deals are still being worked on...
(old news - 10:14AM Friday Sep 05 2008)
tags: business · wireless · hardware
The other day, Dell CEO Michael Dell predicted that wireless carriers would start subsidizing sub-$500 netbooks in an effort to sell more 3G wireless broadband connections. What he didn't mention is that Dell's new Inspiron Mini 9 comes ready for that future, with an integrated 3G card that wasn't mentioned in the initial release. Apparently, the feature wasn't announced because Dell hasn't sealed the deal with wireless provider partners yet, though an announcement should arrive in weeks. PC Mag suggests that given Dell's previous relationship with AT&T, it's likely the chip will support HSDPA, not EVDO -- though we'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks.

Verizon EVDO Card

I recently purchased several Dell laptops for a client, and they all included free Verizon EVDO cards. It was part of the RED series of laptops. So I wouldn't be too sure to say AT&T will be the carrier of choice.

And a built-in chip has the problem of obsolescence and inability to work with other standards than the one built-in. Just put a PC Card slot and/or a USB port in there and plug-in whatever cell providers card you want. Why lock yourself in to one std with new 3G/4G stds coming online all the time. And with Wimax, LTE, etc soon to rollout it would be better to maintain flexibility.

Re: Verizon EVDO Card

I think the biggest reason to have an integrated card is if this gets sold subsidized by cell operators with 3G service, as Dell is talking about doing- in that case cellular operators wouldn't want you to have flexibility.

Re: Verizon EVDO Card

I suspect that the chips were relatively cheap, and since UMTS is a bit more of a 'global' standard than EVDO, it is being promoted. At one time, the same statements went for WiFi. I do suspect that it is being subsidized by the wireless industry in general though.
Laptops typically have a life of ~ 3 years... not that much different than that of a cell phone.

They are just Mini-PCI cards. All you do is pop a cover off on the bottom of the laptop and install a new one. Same as adding memory to a laptop.

Re: watch this market fall

This is a "netbook", so you're probably not using it for online gaming or any latency-dependent activity to begin with, and slow speeds will be blamed on the fact that it's a $300 computer to begin with...

Huh? 150ms latency isn't that bad, ad 1.2 Mbit down and 300-500k up pretty much anywhere is really nice to have. SImply put, 3G > no 3G.

buying a new laptop, you have a selection of at&t, sprint, or verizon cards- if they integrate it, I would expect they would run with multiple providers and allow different chipsets at assembly so not to alienate customers.

I've used AT&T 3G and it is horrible. I highly suggest just looking for Wi-fi hot spots then wasting $40 - $60 a month.

Re: watch this market fall

As long as I am traveling within AT&Ts 3G coverage area I know my laptop will have decent internet connectivity. Can't say the same for wifi. The last trip I took without the integrated 3G card active in my notebook I was frustrated by hotels and airports that charge an arm and a leg for wifi access. Never again.

My AT&T USB aircard gives me about 100-150ms latency and up to 1.8Mb down.

So you're telling me the 1.2 Mb/s down, 500 k up, with around 100 - 120 ms latency to google via EVDO is horrible and slow?

Dell already did deal with Vodaphone for 3G integrated chip

Dell's new netbook, the Inspiron Mini 9, will be sold with built-in mobile broadband by Vodafone, the companies announced on Thursday.

The mobile broadband connection in the Vodafone version supports HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access).

Vodafone will start selling the Mini 9 later this month, but has not yet said in which countries it will offer the netbook. For now its "in key European markets", the operator said.
So, it does look like Dell has done at least 1 deal already. Here is their press release: »www.vodafone.com/start/media_rel···one.html

Choice is nice!

FWIW,

On it's larger laptops, Dell offers a choice of integrated EVDO / 3G cards. You can choose from Verizon, Sprint, Vodafone, Telus and AT&T.

I hope they never go the route of forcing you onto only one carrier.

Where? And do they have solid state disks? What is their size/weight?

I doubt that, unless its a 2 or 3 year old refurb model that weights 8 pounds. For what its worth, I just went to Dells website and configured a mini (for kicks) with all the options (bluetooth, 1.3mp camera, 16GB SSD, XP) and the total came out to $474. Thats more than $100 ($125 to be exact) less than an Asus Eee PC 901, and it has a much larger HD. I think I am going to be picking one of these up in the next few weeks because they are a really good deal at the current price.

** I should note that my price included a Dell "$55 instant savings" whatever that means. However, I didnt have to put in any codes it just happened automatically.

Re: Weak as water

What makes you think this is connected to the iPhone? I mean, there's been a trend of PC manufacturers coming out with these "netbook" things essentially since Asus created the Eee PC. Things like the Acer Aspire, the HP Mini-Note, etc... This is just the first one to get mentioned on BBR, since it's vaguely broadband-related I guess.

Just being snarky

I meant the built-in access card and possible bundling to a service provider as is AT&T/iPhone. The HW company sells its product cheaper while being subsidized by the carrier costs.

Well that's just been the normal cellphone business model for years... initially Apple was trying to challenge that model by selling the iPhone 2G (or 1G? confusing terminology -_-) unsubsidized, after all...

Anyway, we all know the iPhone was stolen from the design of the Dell Axim
