Genachowski came to the Commission in 1994 as Special Counsel to General Counsel William E. Kennard. He became Counsel to Chairman Hundt in March 1995 and Chief Counsel to the Chairman in December 1996.
At the FCC, Genachowki was responsible at various times for mass media, cable, wireless and international issues.

| Re: What happened to "change"? "Wheeling and dealing" does not always equate to being in somebody's pocket. The point is you need someone in this position who knows how to negotiate, present the case to people who know next to nothing about technology, and be able to see other aspect other than the technical side.
Remember the FCC just isn't about deploying the latest Internet protocols. They have to keep the balance between the needs of the public and the needs of the communication businesses. They need to keep the balance between regulation and market trends. That takes somebody who can make deals. An engineer would ONLY look at the technology and the ways to deploy it. There is much more to do than that.
If you ask me a lawyer who knows the technology, but isn't geeking over it is the best choice. For too long we have had mini-politicians head the FCC who know next to nothing about the technology they are peddling other than what the industry tells him. This is a step up. | |

| I don't think so. This guy went to Harvard law with Obama, as have a whole bunch of other appointees. They aren't Clinton cronies, THEY ARE OBAMA CRONIES!
And no, this isn't a gig for an engineer - it's for a wheeler dealer pol - especially now that tings are so diverse.
Anyhow, you need to wait and see what this guy says/does before deciding what his deal is. Generally Obama's IT policy is pretty good.
So relax. Wait a few weeks and see.

| Julius You all speak from that most dangerous of places - ignorance. I have known Julius for over ten years. Yes, he is a disciple of Hundt, who ran the FCC on the basis of a simple set of guidelines: study the economics, know the law and do the right thing. Of course, those that disagreed with the reasonable outcome of that mantra will whine and cry that he was in the pocket of whichever constituency lost out, but given the hand that Congress dealt with the Telecom Act (yes, a deeply flawed law), his FCC did a remarkable job of minimizing the damage while maximizing the economic opportunities.
Julius is a brilliant lawyer, an extremely competent administrator and we will be very fortunate to have him at the FCC should President Obama select him.
Why is the presumption that someone who helped raise money for a politician is corrupt or is being paid back for his efforts? Isn't it possible that they share a vision for the future of the country, and that Julius is so dedicated to the promise of Obama, his friend for 20+ years, that he would be trusted by the President to take on this important role? Julius made a ton of money with Barry Diller's IAC. He wouldn't be doing this for the power or prestige, but for the opportunity to make a difference in service of the people.
How many of you cynics and critics have made the sacrifice of public service? Or do you just sit on the sidelines, whining and pointing fingers, ignorant of the tough decisions that must be made that adhere to the law, policy goals and common sense? | |
