For most of the year, our forum users have been discussing and posting screenshots (many were in the beta) of the new interactive FiOSTV guide Verizon's been cooking up for the past year. A few weeks ago, Verizon released a preview that gives a rundown of the new features (there's quite a few). So far, our users are very impressed with the new functionality.

Click for full size
Verizon's John S. Czwartacki e-mails us to note Verizon has launched the new guide in Indiana, Rhode Island and parts of New Jersey, with additional markets on the way before the end of September:
Through a network download, FiOS TV customers will be upgraded to the new guide automatically at no additional cost, and they will continue to use their existing set-top boxes and universal remote controls. In the days leading up to the launch in each market, customers will receive a “driver’s manual” and other communications about the guide’s cool new features.
The company also let Dave Zatz of Zatz Not Funny have an early peek at the features.

I noticed that too.

As soon as I saw it I thought to myself, Microsoft.

Looks pretty slick, though. I'm supposed to be able to get FiOS TV later this year, if all the planets align, and the moon is in the 5th house of...whatever....

Officially jelous..

I'm officially jealous now.. FIOS is sooooo close to here yet so far.. Months away.

and to the Comcast fanboys: Enjoy your 30mbps nodes shared over hundreds of users!! FIOS = 622mbps (soon to be higher) per 32 person node.. Oh and did I mention, FIBER not copper. There is no stepping up from Fiber, it is the top of the line, copper is the bottom of the line.

Yeah, but while you gloat on it, just remember that Verizon will not GIVE you a 622mbps connection, only 30mbps by 2 mbps. You might try and justify how much better it is by saying "at least it's not shared like cable" when in fact, it is shared, but just happens to have a higher capacity at the moment. Cable would too if they got rid of all their analog broadcasts and forced people to go digital. Personally, I still haven't found anything useful to do with 30mbps down. Now the 2mbps upload would come in handy from time to time, but who needs all that download pipe? I don't even think you can find a site with useful info that will give you 30mbps down, except here, maybe. And even here, the speed tests are busy alot, so you probably won't even hit that speed. Now bring in the fanboys with all the claims of how consistent they get 30mbps. I will believe it when I see it myself.

For now, I bet "The Slowsky's" are pissed.

whoopdy doo dah...

so they're catching up to what cablevison and time warner and a host of other top tier cable companies have done in their set-top box/guides... instead of looking cloning (their original intended vision) a no-frills satellite-tv set-top it will look more users friendly.

I don't know what Cablevision you have, but my Cablevision Cable box interface/features is no where near as nice as this new thing Verizon is launching... and Cablevision has had years to implement new stuff... FIOS hasn't been around that long and they're already overhauling with results.

While the FiOS guide has a nice, pretty screen it seems to contain the same info and func as the TWC guide. Not sure what’s here to get all hot in the pants about...

You want results? See your cable bill.. it hasn't gone down I'll tell you that much. In just about every category of service for TV the prices have $$$ GONE UP $$$, you also need to realize MANY of the updated widgets & features ONLY work on the HIGHEST PRICED RENAL BOXES, so one way or another, your wallet will take a hit. The only services which are a good deal with Verizon are internet access and VOIP phone service (NOT POTS PHONE SERVICE).

FIOS TV DVR

Does anyone know where I can get the REAL low down on VZs DVR capabilities? I'm a current FIOS subscriber but I can't find out the real specifics about the box. For instance when I look at VZs site, it does not say if you can revwind a recording to the beginning and also, does the FIOS DVR force you to watch something within a given time.

I currently have two TiVo boxes but if the FIOS box has the same functionality, I think I'll ditch my TiVo boxes simply because I don't want a bunch of boxes using up energy unnecessarily and paying for so many different services.

Thanks

Re: FIOS TV DVR

The recording stays as long as there is space available or you mark it as 'do not erase'. You can fast forward and rewind to your hearts content. If you stop in the middle, you can pick back up where you left off. When you reach the end it effectively 'rewinds' it (keep in mind this is a hard disk based system and there is nothing to really rewind).

Re: FIOS TV DVR

Yeah I know I used "rewind" incorrectly but I couldn't think of an appropriate word.

So, if you don't mine my asking, have you used TiVo and and the VZ DVR and if so which do you think is better.

I know everything I need to know about TiVo but before I give it up just to save cash/energy/space, I wanna be sure the VZ DVR can do just as good a job as my TiVo.

There is a Verizon FiOS store in the Fair Oaks mall where you can play with the box to your hears content. There may be other such stores in the area.

Re: FIOS TV DVR

I've played with a number of DVRs for as long as they've existed. Quite frankly none of them are on par with TiVo. The current generation of Motorola boxes given out by Verizon and the cable providers are just not the same. (I can go into a long list of details on the differences if need be.)

If you want the best, get a TiVo Series 3 - dual HD tuner (with dual cable cards). I'm running one for my FiOS/TV and nothing comes close reliability wise, or feature wise. (Proud TiVo user since 1999.)

The only thing that the TiVo does not do is video on demand. Keep in mind that the playback controls for most video on demand is so minimal(no 15 minute jumps forward or back, one or two forward speeds), that you could swear you were watching the video on a VCR.

Re: FIOS TV DVR

Yeah, I've been a TiVo fan for about three years now but was just wondering about the one VZ is passing around. Don't get me wrong I love my Series 2s but if I can find an alternative to having so many different boxes hooked up to my TVs I'd like to take it but not unless they have the same or better functionality as my TiVos.

Do you have HD? If so, you can record HD on the FIOS DVR but not a Tivo Series 2. You need a Series 3 for HD.

What do you use on the Tivo and we can tell you if there's matching functionality on the FIOS DVR. You can setup series to record or record a single show. You can pad the start/end times. You can tell it to record just first run or repeats, though it determines that differently then Tivo.

Re: FIOS TV DVR

I get some HD channels but I don't really wantch them. A Series 3 is not in the budget.

My concern is whether the VZ DVR has the same capabilities as TiVo. I heard that the VZ DVR won't let you skip through commercials but I don't know if its true. Little things like that.

Yeah, the current interface looks pretty crappy. It's not very intuitive and some often used functions take multiple button presses (with the furnished remote). The whole VOD interface is very cumbersome...

Isn't MS providing the OS for Verizon on this?

Re: Nice but

Actually, the FiOS 2.0 IMG was developed in house and is not MS based at all.

The new IMG will provide features that are not just STB based. It will combine network and stb capabilities. For example, the search capability will go beyond the 2 week time frame housed on the stb. The IMG will have the capability to search media on your PC and eventually interact with youtube. I've also heard it will support gaming, fantasy football, RSS feeds among other things.
Since the new guide combines network and stb function it will allow users to access features via their VZW mobile phone.
That said, who knows when all these capabilities will be available.

ACTUALLY, the newest IMG is being developed by an independent third-party. Verizon has had input to the customization but they are basically licensing the service from the developer. I could tell you who they are...but then I'd have to kill you.

Re: Nice but

Don't know where you got your facts but I interviewed with (and am still considering) a job with the company that did the work. As I say, there was customization, but THAT work was done by the third-party at their India facilities. But since I can't tell you who it is (I'm under an NDA), believe what you want.

BTW...you WILL be seeing very (VERY!) similar interfaces turning up with other major cable operator's STB soon as the third-party has a number of other licensing deals in place already.

When you fast forward a recorded show and stop...does it skip back a few seconds a la TiVo? Cause if it does --- I am switching to Fios ASAP.

I'll stick with Comcast who has none of the MS nonsense. If they go MS, I'll go back to Directv.

For many of us, the MS stuff is a turn off.

Yeah, okay Verizon

Verizon's John S. Czwartacki e-mails us to note Verizon has launched the new guide in Indiana, Rhode Island and parts of New Jersey, with additional markets on the way before the end of September...
September of what? 2008? 2009? Every time Verizon says something is coming and gives a target month/date, you best not hold your breath.

QFT. When I signed up in early March, I was told that the guide would be pushed out later that month. Some of us were promised a speed upgrade for our data service last year - nothing so far.
