New Gesture Recognition Tech Uses Disrupted Wi-Fi Signals
Wave Your Hands in the Air Like You Just Don't Care
by Karl Bode 09:20AM Wednesday Jun 05 2013
Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a new gesture recognition technology that uses physical disruption in Wi-Fi signals around us to control household technology. According to the researcher's findings (pdf), this new "WiSee" technology they've developed uses a 4-antenna receiver and a single-antenna transmitter placed in the living room to detect physical movements anywhere in the home (unlike current camera-based setups like Kinect that require you stand in front of your television). With that set up, researchers say that can currently get 94% accuracy in about 64% of the household setups they've tested this in. There's a little more detail here, and they've also made a video of the technology in motion.

The hand of God

Just amazing. Seems there is no bounds for our understanding of physics and our ability to manipulate it.

I watched the video and...

was impressed. However, the idea of 1) being able to track where I go in the house as well as 2) looking like a fool waving my arms around, did take some of the excitement out of it.

new government surveillence method....

no longer need infrared goggles, you can just map their movements by mapping the wifi disturbance.

So, it will really be true when they say "I sense a disturbance in the Force...."

Cool Tech!

I can't wait till we are able to just talk with our homes. Like HAL did with the crew of the Discovery.

That would be too cool!

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Need to work on my

tin foil suit. This stuff is all around me I'm being cooked from the inside out. LOL.

Do wonder why anyone would want to tracked around their house in real time???

haha I could see it now, People walking near homes just to set off alarms like we used to do to proximity based car alarms in parking lots.(Some car alarms actually have proximity sensors and tell people to back away. So what is fun is to stand there until it sounds and pages the owner and go hide... And then do it several more times.)

Re: Need to work on my

I think for the most part they have been phased out once people learned that sounding car alarms are ignored. Today things tend to focus on tracking the vehicle after theft.

I mean my first job was shopping cart return at a supermarket and if a car alarm went off we always just ignored it as a false alarm.

If somebody suddenly showed up near a window, an autonomous automatic weapon could be activated.

Apple will soon announce they have been granted the patent

Once this technology is fully fleshed out and demonstrated as working and useful, that should be time for Apple to be granted the Patent on it.
