New MSN VideoHoping to battle AOL, Real Networks ( old news - 10:46AM Tuesday Oct 14 2003) tags: Video · businessHoping to out-maneuver competitors AOL and RealNetworks, MSN offers up a free broadband video service. The difference is that for the time being, the MSN broadband video offering won't have MSN exclusive content, though they will offer news, sports and weather to customers. The system will offer some content from NBC News and MSNBC.com at launch, according to PC World. The service will be supported, says Revolution Magazine, by selling 15 second broadband ad spots, appearing once for every five or six minutes of content. MSN has traditionally been somewhat of a money-pit for Microsoft, and posted a $346 million loss in the first nine months of fiscal 2003. Related:- WSJ Thinks Verizon Could Buy DirecTV

| Doesn't Look Good If all they initially plan to offer is NBC and MSNBC Content, they're going to have a real hard time gaining any share of this market. Besides, who wants to watch news feeds online (even pay for it) when I can just watch TV or read the news on wealth of sites. Plus, you have ISPs like Comcast with their "invisible" limits, which will have people nervous about streaming anything for more than 5 minutes a day.

Also, I am pretty sure quality will be sub-par.
I hate registering also - I don't know how many times I have clicked to see something streaming and you either have to register or download some damn player or both.
I can almost guarantee you the quality is poor; but I'll put up with it for free (sorta like those 128K mp3s;) )

| Gosh... Does this just work over some MSN Broadband network, or the Internet in general?
In any case I'm sure its use violates our "acceptable use" policy at work: bandwidth issues. [text was edited by author 2003-10-14 11:21:18]

I don't believe you'll be seeing that, if they use Microsofts Media 9 Player as the streaming software, like they already do at their NBC/MSNBC websites, you'll see buffering for a few seconds, but then after that, great quality streaming. Media Player 9 has better streaming quality then any other player. Your "Buffering 1%.............................................." is characteristic of Real Player and sometimes Quicktime.

| More commercials I hate commercials, save that crap for billboards & newspapers & magazines, which I can opt not to look at or subscribe to. I'm tired of all the control that commercials have on our daily lives.
Did you know that our TV shows could have more content time if it wasn't for commercials. You thought that 32 minutes of your "hour long" show was good, Imagine if they could actually give you 45 or 55 minutes of content instead?
To HELL with commercials. I don't watch TV anymore because of that. I play videogames instead. If a videogame has a commercial at it's opening screen other than for that game or it's sequel, it's history, I don't even consider playing it anymore. If a website has one of those damn annoying ads that blocks your read 10 seconds into it, I stop using that page for good and find a new news source.
I don't have to put up with that shtick, and neither do you.
My 2 cents, is actually worth 10! -- SuperMicro P4QH6 w/Quad Xeon 3.06Ghz, Gainward FX Ultra 1600 AGP 8x Video 256 DDR, 1GB DDR memory, DVD-RW, Audigy II Sound, 180GB SATA Hard Drive, 27" Flat Panel or Independent 3D Glasses. It may be a bit much, But it's the ultimate in gaming experiences!

You hate commercials? ...you wouldn't feel this way if you had to pay $74 for "regular" TV channels just like you pay for the premium networks.
I know we all want everything for free, but believe it or not, we are a market economy and these companies gotta make money. I for one would rather have them make that money from advertisers than off ME. -- ::: Do, or do not, there is no try:::»www.kapilville.com

Exactly right. Is is that hard to just watch a few commercials? or would you rather pay 50 dollars more a month for your cable/dish?`I for sure rather watch the commercials...They aren't that bad for the most part.
So i guess we have to put up with that "shtick", and you should too.

Exactly...You are not paying for the tv station, you're paying for recieving them. So you only pay the Cable company. The channels themselves have to make money somehow, which is why there are commercials.
edit: and if they had versions of it without commercials, you would be paying a lot to watch them. [text was edited by author 2003-10-14 14:10:23]

| Never watch TV commercials again quote: To HELL with commercials. I don't watch TV anymore because of that.
Anyone who can figure out how to:
- run a PC - install/manage/use broadband - start and view an online video stream
should be able to never watch TV commercials again by:
a) either using a TiVo or DishDVR and fast-forwarding through the commercials
b) watching Premium channels like HBO or Showtime, which have better programs, like Carnivale and Jeremiah, which I can watch in digital 5.1 sound with no commercials. Well worth the $10 per month.
Some people complain about the bad values promoted by TV programs, but I find that commercials are much worse - a majority of the little "dramas" in TV commercials are based on promoting or celebrating unethical behavior.
A prime example is the one with the father teaching his son to swim and then pushes the son out of the way (and into the water), so that he can retrieve $0.25 - with the punchline "Our Kind of Customer".
