But company still not actually telling anyone about it...
(old news - 05:00PM Wednesday Apr 23 2008)
tags: dsl · prices · business · bandwidth · telco · Qwest.net
Yesterday we mentioned that Qwest's new 12Mbps/1Mbps and 20Mbps/1Mbps ADSL2+ tiers must be getting very close to official launch, given the volume of chatter among employees and business partners. It appears the new tiers are now being displayed on the Qwest website, though Qwest still hasn't officially announced them. Users in Arizona, Colorado and Minnesota all tell us their zip codes show the service is available -- but to our knowledge nobody has been able to order the faster service yet.

Click for full size
For those who missed yesterday's news the new 20Mbps/1Mbps service (Qwest Connect Quantum) without phone service is $105, a price that jumps to $115 per month after a year. The price for 12Mbps/1Mbps service (Qwest Connect Platinum) is $52 a month, a price that jumps to $65 a month after 12 months.

We're still trying to get Qwest public relations to confirm that a tier that clearly exists actually exists (sigh) in order to get you some official launch markets, but so far they're not talking. We suppose their public relations ducks aren't in a row just yet for the official launch, but we assume they'll want to advertise their shiny new $300 million product at some point.

Meanwhile, if any Qwest customers have any success actually ordering either new tier, let us know in the comment section below.

Qwest speed tiers

I contacted Qwest today to see about possibly changing my services and was offered the new 12 and 20 Mbps service. I did not take them up on their offer since I am happy with the 7 Mbps tier. This was for Sammamish WA.

Re: Qwest speed tiers

appears to be available in Seattle, for a few bucks more i can go from 7 to 12 mbs, but my upload would dip a bit. screw that. i think the new speed tiers have something to do with the city of Seattle wanting to contract an all fiber network.

Re: Qwest speed tiers

I currently have Qwest 1.5/896 and checked today if they were going to offer anything faster in my area. No chance....in the near future. There is no competition in my area so they do not feel pressured to offer anything faster than 1.5 for each customer.

Still only 3mb.

Here in Idaho Falls, ID I can only get the 3mb still. So no love here.

Re: Still only 3mb.

The only place in Idaho where FTTN is being installed is the Boise area (Boise, Garden City, Eagle). I don't believe smaller CO's will be serving it, even though they do DSL, as most DSLAMs in smaller CO's are DS3 fed.

No Omaha

I just tried Omaha, I am 3 blocks from a 3yr old fiber fed RT, currently have 6/1. No Go.

Not that I would pay that, I already have Cox Business with 25mb speed boost and 12/1 + Static IP for $99.

Well...

I called them and got a 'not available in your area' answer. But, the crossover box is outside my house, and I've been speaking with the contractors laying the fiber and qwest personnel working on the box...and they said end of April/first of May for it to go live here.

...but, who knows.

The Most Obvious Non-Announcemenet Ever

Um...not announcing them? I'm a tad confused. Last Sunday I was at Valley West Mall in West Des Moines, IA, and they had promotional fliers/posters all over their booth for the new high-speed tiers.

Unless by official announcement you mean some kind of corporate mumbo-jumbo press release. But I mean, information is definitely out there. I was looking up the availability of the tiers in my area on their website days ago.

FAST

Their site also call 256Kbps 'FAST', and the 1.5Mbps 'FASTER'

Speedy, indeed.

Re: FAST

That's rather outrageous pricing.

For example, I pay for 30/5mbit cable from Cablevision Optimum Online which runs me $55 dollars a month. If I did not have Cable TV, it would cost $65 dollars a month.

They sure didn't increase their upload!

The upload for the 1.5 and 7 mbps tiers is 896 kbps. What a joke!

Live in Utah

Karl, a number of our subscribers have already ordered FTTN service. This is along the Wasatch Front in Utah, where is has been rather widely rolled out, and has indeed been announced.

Worth mentioning, this is a Qwest.net/MSN service only. Qwest is not allowing third party ISPs to host this connection as they have for DSL for the entire existence of the product.

Re: Live in Utah

Any ideas on when Qwest is going to allow third-party ISPs on their FTTN network? Or is there some reason that I'm not aware of that Qwest wouldn't want third-party ISPs on their FTTN?

whats really sad is a neighborhood that is barely 10 years old only has speeds as fast as 1.5 down! WTF

Qwest really bugs me to be honest. They just are not putting enough money into their network and it pisses me off.

I would rather give my money to qwest then to comcast any day of the week. Just wish they would wake up.

Re: Live in Utah

Give it a chance. They just announced they were rolling this network out like six months ago. There is a lot of work going in to rolling this service out. Here in NM they have turned up the service to about 15,000 homes, and the first turn up happend at the end of February. They have started where there was fiber in the ground already. I've heard they are going to work on the CO based DSL customers next year. This year it is all about upgrading remote terminals that have fiber run close by. I think they are going about it smart. I wish the 20M tier was lower, but I think the 12M is pretty reasonable.

@qwest.net

Noy On My Line

The Qwest website continues to offer me only 3mb down service. Probably because they are too bloody cheap to upgrade the 30 year old copper that serves my home. And there are no plans to install a closer remote terminal. They are busy cherry picking the new neighborhoods on the outskirts of Phoenix and ignoring the central city.

It is even worse in Newport, OR where I can only get 1.5mb down and there is little likelihood of improvement. I just may move to Charter pipeline for less money and faster speeds.

Basically this :
20Mbits/sec = 4000feet (more or less)
12Mbits/sec = 7900feet (more or less)

throttling

qwest just started to traffic shape my torrents.

anyone else have the same problem?

I thought they didn't do that.

wah

Nice 20Mbps but seriously why so little Upload. If it was at least 5-10Mbps sure fork over 100$, probably wont be buying this. Wish they werent so tight with it. I use more upload then what I download.
