| What's really funny to watch is people at Best Buy extolling all the virtues of Vista. They even a HUGE sign with "The Vista Center" when you walk in. "I can't get a maching with XP?" "No, but why would you want to. Vista does so much more!"
As far is this thing, stupid people will buy anything.

Actually, mine is. The new TV is much sharper than the one it replaced. (Only an NTSC tuner and I haven't found an ATSC box cheap enough yet - and only a few shows that I ever watch are even available in HD anyway. The cable co. wants $15/month for their HD box which is also a DVR. Not worth it). Looks great with a well-encoded DVD too.

| snake oil What about all the other HOPS NICS and routers and switches that your packets pass through on their way to the destination.
This is like replacing 1 link in a rusted chain.
May work if you have 2 computers connected together with a crossover cable both using this nic.

| Just Get A Real Network Card If you're spending less than 50 dollars on a network card it's most likely that it's a softNIC just like a winmodem. It uses your processor to handle your packets.
A server class NIC does everything on chip with fast ASIC's.
Now it only applies if you use static or dhcp for your internet connection.
If you're using any kind of encapsulation such as PPPoE then you really need a faster firewall. The firewall inspecting the packets and doing the MTU changes between a Ethernet 1500 packet and a PPPoE 1492 Packet takes processing time and I do not know of any consumer routers that have ASIC's for this.
So it's sometimes better to take a 1ghz pc and turn it into a router with software such as Pfsense or ipcop. -- Ubuntu Tips »www.ubuntutips.org

| Re: Just Get A Real Network Card Unless you are in a broadcast storm the amount of "work" your CPU has to do to accomadate such a NIC is irrelevant.
If you are encrypting/decrypting it would certainly help as that is a lot more CPU intensive but still would have barely any effect on any game. However, I don't know of a game that uses encrypted data between the client and the server (not that there isn't one, I just dont know of it).

$25 nic = softnic = crap. I still would not spend $200 for a gaming nic.

The NIC has it's own extensible Linux OS. I remember in DAoC radar programs to find people in the zone by sniffing packets before it reached the Win OS....
They also note that you can change the speed that the NIC reports it's ping to outbound servers as... not really sure how that works or if adding 41ms to your ping would really allow you to cheat...
They also suggest a possible native Teamspeak client or possibly a NIC only Bittorret client/server with packet prioritization.
Not that I'd spend the money... but interesting...

| I have one... Luckily I didn't pay for it. It has neat blinking lights (like aircraft anti-collision strobes) that blink regardless of connectivity (although since they're on the bottom side of the card and mine is mounted in the bottom slot you can't really see them).
I'm not convinced this card does anything real. Sure it offloads from the CPU but any good NIC does that.
I would not pay more than $25 for this card.
