New Wide Open West Speeds This Week?
Ohio-based ISP preps new 15Mbps tiers
by Karl Bode 11:37AM Monday Sep 15 2008
The past week or so has seen our Wide Open West forum filled with chatter about the company upgrading their speed tiers starting tomorrow (September 16). Tipsters suggest that customers will not only be seeing new bundles, but most tiers will see significant speed hikes as well. Employees had stated new speeds have been in testing for a while -- but suddenly forum gossip is providing greater accuracy. It's a welcome shift, given that currently, the fastest standalone broadband service WOW offers is 6Mbps/1Mbps for $63.99.

These new rumors suggest that "Value" customers will be going from 768kbps/256kbps to 2Mbps/1Mbps, "Basic" customers will be going from 2Mbps/500kbps to 4Mbps/1Mbps, and "Advanced" customers will be going from 4Mbps/500kbps to 8Mbps/1Mbps. The company is also (if rumors are accurate) significantly boosting their top speed, moving "Ultra" and "Ultra Plus" customers from 6Mbps/650kbps and 6Mbps/1Mbps to 15Mbps/1Mbps and 15Mbps/2Mbps respectively. So far, WOW isn't willing to comment (usually the case with new speed launches), but you don't have long to wait for confirmation.

No fair!

If WOW does do their upgrades, their ultra tier will be significantly faster on download speed than is available here through anybody except Comcast Business.

Honestly though I'm glad to hear that WOW is moving into 2007-2008 with speeds. Problem here is Comcast is stuck in last year.

I wouldn't say Comcast is stuck in last year. They do have markets with 16/2 mbps packages. And the rest of the country 8/2 mbps is the top tier. I would say WOW and Comcast are pretty neck-and-neck here.

Re: No fair!

Okay, let me rephrase: WOW will be upping their top speed to 15/2 in ALL markets, with no PowerBoost tomfoolery. Comcast on the other hand only implements 16/2 service where there's FiOS pretty much. The Denver area is stuck with 8/2. So while some areas aren't so bad, WOW's top tier would be a significant improvement over what I have right now with Comcast. Basically the difference between speeds for the first 50 MB of a download and speeds for the full download.

No FiOS here and Comcast offers 16/2, for less than what WOW will be charging for 15/2. And yes, I am a WOW customer.

all this means...

is that the company finally began upgrading it's outside docsis 2.0 plant to offer proper docsis 2.0 speeds while the rest of the industry preps for docsis 3.0 rollout.

what a triumph!

Re: all this means...

What are you babbling about? Very few ISPs are even moving past max DOCSIS 1.1 speeds. I don't see the point in your post.

Not bad

The tiers are not really that bad i dont think. At least they are not trying to stick you with one package one size fits all deal.

Re: Not bad

Not sure about taxes and fees (only tax on my bill I get is for modem rental, and that's sales tax) but those prices are slightly less than Comcast's. Modem rental over here is $3/month for what amounst to a $20 modem, and installation was $49. But maybe taxes and fees go on top of that.

Compared to cox, those fees are pretty cheap.
I don't see the digital gateway fee that cox hits the havenot areas with either.

That's your opinion, but for those of use who like Fox News, and there are millions who fit into that category, this would be welcome news.

Re: Still weak on HD though

Regardless of people's thoughts on Fox news, I'm taking news in general. For me, I just don't see the advantage of HD news. I'd rather see a movie channel or something more entertaining taking up the HD bandwidth.

Fair and balanced entertainment, brought to you by Roger Ailes. In fact it's so fair and balanced, they tell you it's fair and balanced.

It's good for a laugh. But no one I know calls it "news".

Re: Still weak on HD though

You are entitled to your opinion, but those of us who disagree with you and who really do regard Fox News as "fair and balanced" are happy to see it go HD. If MSDNC, or excuse me, I meant to say MSNBC, goes HD that would be fine with me too even though I consider them nothing more than a propaganda wing of the DNC.

and they don't even have ESPN2 HD or the full NFL network.

Will they get the TWC HD when the new HD weather star comes out?

I could care less about ESPN 2. And NFL Network doesn't do HD all the time anyways. That's another station I don't care about though.

God I hope not. Just like all the "news" channels in HD, weather in HD is just a waste of bandwidth.

Re: Still weak on HD though

On the other hand the DOCSIS 2 spec allows for 30 Mbps and WOW's speeds are only half that with the upgrade. There is still plenty of headroom for non-D3 expansion even after the upgrades. Especially with uploads.

ESPN2 shows over flow stuff at times.

They don't have CSN+ HD, SCIFI HD, SPEED HD, SPKE HD, USA HD, VS / golf HD, SCI HD, APL HD, BIO HD and more also they only HAVE 1 HD ver of SHO, MAX, HBO, and Starz.

TMC HD.

mlb extra innings HD.

Direct TV does with lower prices and the HD channels have the same # as the sd ver of them.

Also the there hd extra pack only has HD only channels in it. Unlike wow there they put HD channels that have a SD one in it.

If FX actually provides real HD programming then I think that would be a fairly good addition. Their original series IMO are pretty good not to mention they show lots of movies. Faux News on the other hand is pure trash.

I thought this was offical news since it was making front page. Either way it's still great for the new speed updates and HD channels. Yay for FX HD!

When tomorrow

I wonder exactly when the speed changes will take place. Whether its when the clock strikes midnight or if it will be later in the day sometime. I would imagine it would be at a random time during the day.
