New Windows could solve age-old format puzzle--at a price
(old news - 08:13AM Wednesday Mar 13 2002)
By Mike Ricciuti - CNET News.com

To achieve the long-elusive goal of easily finding information hidden in computer files, Microsoft is returning to a decade-old idea.

The company is building new file organization software that will begin to form the underpinnings of the next major version of its Windows operating system. The complex data software is meant to address a conundrum as old as the computer industry itself: how to quickly find and work with a piece of information, no matter what its format, from any location.

What is this?

At first glance, I can't tell whether this is supposed to be for a new file system, or some new way of archiving things.

Sorry if I seem dense, but i just don't understand what this is all about .

Re: What is this?

I've been wondering the same thing. When one of us finds out, please let the other know

Re: What is this?

Maybe it is where Windows can open any file extension? Perhaps Word could open any file?? I'm in the dark too

Sounds to me like a new file system that is based off a database deal.

If they go through with this, they'll have to pretty much rework everything - Windows kernel, all their programs, etc.

Doesn't this breach security?

Doesn't this mean that they are building a file system where they can EXTRACT hidden info?
Perhaps bypassing any security?

Unless they mean to eliminate file formats... but why would they do that? We can already visualize sound!

How I take it....

What I see here basically is combining a database with the file system. It wouldn't really be something you'd notice per se, like you'd still cruise around the hd and different files would be in different places, not all in the same group, but their actual locations and functions would be stored in the computer like a database. It's kinda like a self-journaling file system (and maybe that'll be a feature they'll add with it, since while you're doing one might as well do the other)

I think what'll happen is if you save a text file, call it foo.txt, it'll also note in the database what the file type is and all that other information. The main difference is that instead of this data being attached to each file (like the timestamp and extension are), it'll also be noted in the database. This way if you're fully assimilated into .NET and you want to do something the server can just query the database and find out where things are without having to ask if the expected path isn't the correct one. Kinda scary IMHO. But if they really go that far, it'd be more efficient to make these notations part of the fs itself rather than a seperate application, at least faster, and if they do that then they might as well make it self journaling too.

Failure is not an option. It comes standard with every Windows installation

I took it to mean

I figured they were talking about standardizing all file types so that you could go into windows and tell it to search for everything on john doe and it could look through all your spread sheets, e-mails, word docs, and whatever else you have.

It might be good for people who have a problem finding things on there computer or govenment investigators searching corprate mainframes. Bad idea if your worried about companies or government searching through your computer through back doors to get info on your personal life.
