Re: SweetI don't agree. It is poor design that kills them. Don't get me wrong cuz I love my 360s but they are poorly designed hardware. All of them will die...just a matter of time. Only way around it is either fix it yourself or MS does a redesign. Which I don't see happening. I would bet not until the next gen of the xbox.

Re: SweetI have 2 and only one, the first to buy at release, had the problem. Other than that no issues at all.
Out of the 45 in my friend list the max any one had to replace was two, but the norm since to be 1. and a about half never. So 6 is abnormal by all means

Re: SweetI know several people that have gone through at least 3 or more systems. Almost everybody I know has had to have their system replaced at least once. Personally, I am on my third system since I bought my original system back in March of 2007 and I can say for sure that my systems did not die from misuse or excessive use as I normally only play an hour or two each night.
The plain fact of the matter is the Microsoft, who can't design hardware worth a damn, decided that they would put the system's GPU, the hottest part of the system, in the NARROWEST part of the case. The resulting lack of airflow eventually leads to the GPU effectively burning out. Microsoft has been trying to solve the problem with a larger heat sink and more thermal grease but this is nothing more than a band-aid. No matter which way you cut it, the 360 runs way too hot and has too little airflow.

Re: SweetAnd I know 20 or so people with 360's who haven't had to replace a single one of theirs. Of course, they don't have them stuffed into a tiny little cubby hole in their entertainment center, or sitting on top of carpet either ...
There are problems with the 360 overheating, but when you get upwards of 3,4,5 or 6, I'd start investigating what *I* might be doing to cause the problem.

Re: SweetI agree...
Ive had mine sitting on a seperate table with lots of open airspace. THe power brick is on the table too. Not sitting on the carpet I was first shipment of the original xbox machines. Never had a problem with it. still going strong.
You need lots of open airspace, and not have anything impede its airflow. Its no different than a pc, its suppsoed to have x ammount of airspace arround it. typically if you provide that you should be ok.

It's not just MS. I learnt about these new gen systems running hot a while back. My original PlayStation 1 with a mod chip overheated on me and died because I rested it directly on the carpet. It was a newbie mistake because the air slits were at the bottom of its case. How did I know as the only other gaming systems I had before were NES, Super NES, and the Sega Genesis. None of them had heating problems. Long story short, ever since that time I've always put my gaming systems out in the open or if they need to be inside an entertainment system cabinet like I have now, I make sure the compartments are big enough to allow good airflow. Heck, I even removed the stupid cardboard type backing for the entertainment system so that my DirecTV-Tivo HD-DVR, amplifier, gaming systems, etc will have free airflow at the back to expel heat. During summer, I direct a fan at them especially on whatever gaming system I'm playing at the moment. It's all about taking care of your electronics. With the power of these devices nowadays, overheating is a very possible cause of death. You just have to take precautions.

I had an original 360 that I waited in line for 10 hours to get and it didn't get the RRD until about 2 1/2 years later. I had it in a wall unit with my receiver and I just didn't have adequate air flow which is what I attributed to the death of my first one. I replaced it, ripped off the heat sink and slapped some Artic Silver on there and an after market fan with USB readout to monitor the temps. When I play I play for 3 or 4 hours at a time and since getting better air flow and putting the aftermarket fan on I haven't had an issue.

Totally agree. Had ours since 12/05, never had probs, but RROD'd back in Aug. , guess I consider us lucky having almost a 3 yr run.
Since I had nothing to loose, I went ahead and fixed myself. Since being familiar w/ building my own PC's, did some research and went to Youtube, watched some disassembly vids and OUILA, had the thing apart in about 1/2 hr.
Really it's not just the aspect of the GPU placement w/ the airflow, it's also the crappy heatsink Xclamps that are the main cause. Overtime as these things begin to bend, as that happens loss of continuity from the heatsinks to the CPU/GPU, hence the failures.
Once I had it open, w/ mobo pulled, cleaned of the CPU/GPU, placed new good quality thermal grease, pulled the Xclamp crap off, re-seated HSinks w/ new connectors and put back together. Been runnin great ever since. Total cost was $25 for parts, plus the learning experience. No $99 fee for Msoft to send back another "defective" unit.
Have recently done same thing to our PS3, boy talk about a monster, geesh.
Peace! | |

I rarely use mine and I'm on my 3rd one. It's kept in a clean environment and is never moved. Just go to fire the thing up and dead. MS threw quality control out the window (no pun intended) just to shove the thing out the door as fast as possible.

I think the new Xbox Live is great and much more enjoyable then the old blade setup. The Netflix deal is also great so I don't have to mess with the buggy VMC plug-in to stream to my 360. The plug in still works great though if I want to use Media Center on my PC to watch movies instead of the Netflix player in my web browser.

Very Good UpdateThe NXE is a great improvement to the console. It makes the entire system feel new. The Netflix streaming works wonderfully (although the HD selection is pretty pathetic), the new avatars are actually pretty slick (I thought I'd hate them), and being able to install games to the hard drive is killer.
The UI as a whole has been dramatically improved and is much, much faster. The media browsing interface (for streaming media from your home media server) screens are lightening fast and are much easier to navigate.
Overall a top notch update from Microsoft. I'm surprised they did so well on their first try.

New layout is a lot better though. The xbox seems to be a lot quieter. Well, as I posted earlier, I setup an account via Xbox Live and do already have an account with Netflix. I did not know that you had to have a Gold account to stream Netflix. Screw that, I'll wait until December when Tivo adds Netflix streaming to their subs. No Gold sub. needed. The movies on Netflix play now list aren't that great to begin with.

Looking forwardI am looking forward to this upgrade when I get home.
I bought one of the original XBOX360 systems when they first came out, the ones with the power issues and never had a single issue with it. It has been dragged around other people's houses and even hooked up outside over the summer.
I bought the Best Buy warranty on it originally and still have yet to use it. The simplicity and and the ability to deliver has made this the best system I have ever owned. It also looks fantastic in 1080P on a 47" TV.

nifty!Very cool they finally put netflix on. REALLY wish this were possible for "silver" level users, and I don't see why one must have their paid membership to access what I'm already paying for - that seems like a total scam.
Because of this, I may not even bother with netflix via the xbox. Convenience factor sounds neat, but you still have to pick movies from a regular computer, right???
I have a perfectly good laptop that has video output. It may be a better choice for me to just use that. I've done it before, and it works decently well...
If they can't/won't make this an option for "silver" level, I think that's sad. Was really hoping they might change their minds closer to release, but I guess not.
Either way, it'd be nice if there were also a better selection. The studios need to realize that this is the future...

Re: nifty!I think the whole point is to try and get more Gold subscribers and Xbox 360 owners, not just get existing Gold members to purchase a Netflix subscription. Only about 50% of the ~10 million Xbox 360 owners are currently Gold members.
I'm sure with Reed Hastings, the founder/CEO of Netflix, sitting as one of Microsoft's board of directors, they worked out a sweet deal that will squeeze the maximum amount of money from everyone.

Question - and a CommentFirst the comment.
I had gold but I always let it expire. The reason is that there's really no value to the casual gamer who doesn't like to game online. Microsoft doesn't get it. If they really want more customers paying for Gold, make it lucrative for ALL gamers, not just Xbox Live gamers. As it stands, it's little more than an obligation to a part of the audience: "if you want to game against your friends, pay this money". It should be marketed as a cost benefit: "if you pay this money, you get access to a variety of features AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE".
Example:
One free 24-hour NetFlix SD movie download per month when you subscribe to Silver. Three free 24-hour NetFlix HD movie downloads per month when you subscribe to Gold.
That's for the movie goers. For the gamers:
One free Xbox Live Arcade or Originals download per year just for being a Gold subscriber.
Anyway...on to my question.
One thing I'm worried about with this "Experience" is the loss of what I consider critical features in the current experience. Namely, custom soundtracks and networked files(music, videos, pictures, etc). All of the previews are focusing on those ignorant avatars and the look, but what I want to make sure is that all features that were in the current experience, are still in the new experience, hopefully enhanced (i.e. the music player not having better navigation and playlist controls).
Also, is Media Center still there (even though I never used it)?
Lastly, I noticed Microsoft taking off demos, which doesn't make me happy. Have they butchered any other content that used to be readily available?

As far as netflix goesA) No movies by Columbia( owned by Sony ) are available via XBL. Hmmmm.
B) PlyOn also work streams Netflix. ALL netflix not just some. It's $30 one time fee vs $50 per year with XBL. PlayOn also streams NetFlix via the PS3. So Netflix on XBL isn't really much of an advantage.

Still no word...and still no word yet on the bit-rate of a HD movie with quality maxed out...hoepfully time will tell....and soon, at that. edit: update! » gizmodo.com/5093323/the- ··· treaminglooks like it'll have 2 bitrates: 2.6 meg and 3.8 meg. » blog.netflix.com/2008/11 ··· ing.htmlfurther info. Sadly, only stereo, but they're working on a way around that. Supposedly, according to them, the titles (with maximum bandwidth) will look better than SD, but not as good as Blu-Ray....obviously we all already knew this...I just wonder how close to Blu-Ray it is? 25%? 50%? hopefully, one day, they'll offer the ability to stream at even higher bitrates---I'm sure the picture would look fairly good if it was 5 megabits or higher.

Better Than PlayON?I'm curious to know if there is any improvement on selection or picture quality using the XBox solution vs. PlayON. I already paid the $30 for PlayON and find it OK. Just wondering if there are more movies available through XBox Gold and if the HD content is strictly available through the XBox.
Personally, I would pay for the Gold if it included the network on-demand programming that is currently being sold for way too much.

We have yet to see real high def anywhere1080P looks awsome and is probably all we'll ever need (really be able to see) but it is far from perfect and far from where things will be going. Bluray will poof out sooner than later and we'll see much better quality in the future (not that distant). To expect perfect video over todays US limited speed connections is a dream some may see come true but probably never enjoy with the imagined bandwith crunch and caps we now see. Don't get to drunk on HD 75% of what we think is HD isn't lol

It's pointlessThe only useful feature is the 8 person chat. That is it. The avatars are dumb and not even nearly configurable as nintendo miis. This clearly is a feature set up purely to sell accessories for. Not set up in anyway to go nuts and be creative on your own like on the wii. Everything new just seems like a way to sell stuff on top of your live subscription or a way to show advertisements. Loading games onto your hard drive and netflix is pretty pointless when you have a 20gig drive. Maybe they will cut the price of the 120gig drive by 2/3s to make it closer to affordability. That thing is priced at only 50 dollars less than a brand new xbox and 100 dollar more than it should really cost.

NXE ProblemsI downloaded and installed everything just fine, but on every other boot now my Xbox freezes during a few minutes of general use, and this is the first problem I've ever had out of it, not even a single RROD.

Kinda on the fenceNot sure about the NXE yet, while I like the new format per say, I could do w/o the Wii looking avatars, need to have more geezer gamer stuff for guys like me.
Not into the Netflix thing, so just gotta get used to it.

unlimited? If I pay the $50 for a xbox live gold account, and then sign up for the $8.99/mo. Netflix account, how many movies and tv shows can i stream on my xbox 360 per month? is it unlimited?

Re: unlimited?I think you can only queue so many movies at a time but there isn't a limit to how many a month you want to watch. Once you finish watching one or two just remove them from your queue and add new ones. Also, not every movie that Neflix has is available for Instant Watching but they do have a lot that are. I did it the other day and was up an running with movies streaming to my new Xbox Live Experience in 5 minutes.
