New York State Creates $500 Million Broadband Fund Tuesday Jan 20 2015 08:11 EDT New York State has announced a $1 billion plan to improve the state's broadband infrastructure. According to the government's announcement, the State plans to use $500 million in "capital funds from bank settlements to incentivize the private sector to expand high-speed broadband access in underserved and unserved areas." Companies interested in gaining access to this money will need to contribute a 1:1 funding match. Participants of the program must contribute 100 Mbps with the exceptions of the most rural areas, where 25 Mbps will be acceptable. FCC boss Tom Wheeler has been making the rounds lately noting that three quarters of Americans lack access to the choice of more than 1 ISP at speeds faster than 25 Mbps. “Access to high-speed internet is critical to ensuring that all New Yorkers can reach their full potential in today’s technology-driven world," Governor Cuomo said. "We’re launching the largest state broadband investment in the nation in order to make that goal a reality. This is a truly bold undertaking that will improve the lives of New Yorkers in every corner of the State, and I am proud to make it a priority of our administration’s second term agenda." |

History Repeats..If history is an indication of the future, the state of NY will have waste $500 million dollars, only to find themselves, 20 years from now, asking the same questions.

problem isThe problem is.. Most of that 500 million will go into areas already littered with broadband and the rest will simply disappear into ceo profits..
Until they put a mandatory prison time for misuse of funds on top of the bills, these pigs will continue to gobble up the money meant to catch this country up in communications.
