New iPhone Dropping In June?
New HSDPA chip, more video-centric
by Karl Bode Monday 23-Mar-2009 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Rumors have been bouncing about to this effect for a month or so, but Boy Genius Report quotes an anonymous source at AT&T who insists a new iPhone will drop in June. The new phone could contain a new Infineon HSDPA wireless data chip that will come in handy, given that AT&T already has 7.2Mbps HSDPA working in the labs, and will deploy 20Mbps HSPA release 7 sometime in 2009. In line with previous rumblings, the next iPhone will take advantage of the faster AT&T network speeds by being more video centric (actually being able to record video would be a start).

Good Features, Not Enough Backhaul Bandwidth

That's cool and all, but AT&T is in no way prepared to actually offer that kind of bandwidth. As it stands the iPhone 3G can do 3.6MBps, but you won't find anyone getting it. You'd be lucky to find someone getting 1MBps.

AT&T simply doesn't have the bandwidth needed to feed the massive influx of iPhone users. Between oversaturated towers from a wireless perspective, to a lack of sufficient backhaul bandwidth from many of those towers, AT&T is already out of bandwidth for smartphone users.

As such no one is going to be able to get anything close to 7.2MBps out of a new iPhone unless AT&T starts playing tricks and throttling people or something similar. If the network is being fair, the new iPhone won't be any faster than the 3G until AT&T can resolve their bandwidth issues.

Of course iPhone owners in other locations (I hear O2 is doing well) will have different stories. They may actually stand to benefit from a faster iPhone.

Re: Good Features, Not Enough Backhaul Bandwidth

I just ran a speed test in the middle of Pittsburgh.... 472kbps on 3G.

It's a good night.

On Sprint, I get between 500kbps and 900kbps on EVDO Rev A. (Treo 800w)
On AT&T, I get between 500kbps and 900kbps on HSDPA (HTC Tilt)

Tethered, I got more.

Re: Good Features, Not Enough Backhaul Bandwidth

It's anecdotal, for sure, but it's about true.

I routinely get between 1 and 1.2 megabits down on my Touch Pro tethered. It doesn't even seem to be very signal dependent past about 30% of perfect signal, it just sits there. I consider that pretty good for Rev.A around where I am.

Out here, AT&T has been awful, (and I mean, AWFUL) until about a month ago when they decided they were going to upgrade everything. There are mini towers spread all over some parts of the foothills, others for areas where the dips in terrain make it absolutely necessary. I've never seen cellular antennas these small (they're about a foot tall, perhaps 3 inches in width), all over the place. Mounted on street lights, power poles, lonely poles, just about everything more than 10-15 feet in the air.

I'm assuming it's now a lot better around those parts.

Doesn't matter what it has

Apps apps apps along with a bit of 'ease of use' and 3.0 feature set will be selling the new phone just as apps and ease of use sells the current one. It won't be what 3-4G tech it has in it. Even with the current 3G issues the phone is a "hit".

Crap? Just because you don't like the phone, doesn't mean it's crap. The iPhone is one of the best phones on the market. I wouldn't trade this phone for ANY OTHER phone available right now.

I would, however, love to have 3G in my area.

Re: Just when I was thinking about buying one...

Why is it crap?

I'm not a big fan of cell phones so it'd be interesting to hear.

To illustrate my point, I have, please sit down for this, a Samsung SCH-A570 - think `klunker' ... and I rarely carry it around.

for the current iphone:
no copy-paste
no a2dp
no video recording
no voice-dialing
no mms
no removable battery
low res camera
no flash on that low res camera
no removable memory
no java

And last but certainly not least: locked to ATT's network.

Re: Just when I was thinking about buying one...

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I'm going to assume other phones offer the above features.

Given my disdain for cell phones, a lot of the above features don't apply to my klunker except for the `no removable battery' That is absolutely awful. What do folks do when the battery has memory-effect? Chuck the phone? Send it back for `repairs'?

Many of the most basic phones have the above features.
In fact, my dumbphone/featurephone w580i had copy-paste, a2dp, voice-dial, mms, the same quality 2mp camera, removable memory, and a removable battery.
My even older razr had MMS, copy-paste, and a removable battery.

Both of those phones cost me 10%-25% the price of an iPhone - so those aren't features that shouldn't be expected on a $500 device.

Given my disdain for cell phones, a lot of the above features don't apply to my klunker except for the `no removable battery' That is absolutely awful. What do folks do when the battery has memory-effect? Chuck the phone? Send it back for `repairs'?
They have to purchase Applecare (for $70), and send (you pay shipping) the entire phone in for repair. You're covered for 2 years, but if the battery is not more than 50% depleted, (which you can't measure ahead of time because you can't remove the battery), you're not covered.

Anyone who thinks the iphone is "one of the best phones on the market", either:
1) hasn't looked at the market
2) has fallen victim to the marketing
3) fallen victim to the fad
4) doesn't know what they're missing
5) gauges what's "best" by what everyone else has and probably also thought the Razr was the "best phone on the market" because everyone had that too.

Re: Just when I was thinking about buying one...

Excellent response. Thank you.

I suspect if I ever get rid of my klunker, I'll be posting on here for recommendations. The one thing I like about my phone (the only thing actually) is it has the ability for me to plug in an external antenna.

I have a Yagi antenna at my cottage and use it to get reception on my mobile phone. We don't have phone service there so that's how I get it to work.

You would think that these would be some of the first features put into the iPhone, I mean... c'mon these things are a no brainer. Whoever is in charge of this stuff should be canned.

On another note; I can't wait until the contract between AT&T and Apple is over and they release this on Verizon -- and the sweet thing is that by that time most of the improvements should have already been made.

Right. The above poster is right. The current phone can already outrun the network it's tethered to. Sounds like the next iPhone isn't going to offer much other then another gallon of kool-aid for the dedicated fanboys.

I'll hang on to my "slow" 3G.

Poor At&t

Driving to work, listening to a nationwide radio-talk show. The guest, calling from Los Angeles, got dropped twice when brought up to talk with the host. On the third try, the caller started by blaming the previous dropped calls on her iPhone. The guest interview (on politics)was preceded by comments on the 'surprisingly poor' cell service on her iPhone.

That was in L.A. Try it in Barstow.

HSDPA vs. 3G vs. WiFi?

I hope there is more than HSDPA to the new version. I have decent 3G in my area and I can't tell the difference usually between 3G and WiFi. And my iPhone WiFi speed test shows 9Mbps vs 3G at 600Kbps.

Agreed. I suspect the iPhone will have to have a significantly faster processor (which rumors say it will) in order for it to take advantage of the faster network speeds available to it.

the current iphone 3g supports HSDPA. It's just 3.6mbps HSDPA instead of 7.2mbps HSDPA. Anything above the basic 384kbps UMTS is HSDPA...

I'm still curious of whether this phone will support faster HSUPA tho...

More lines...

Looks like I'm gonna have to stand in line for 5 hours like I did the iPhone 3G release!

On a side note, How come people think I'm an Apple fanboi?

Why stand in line? Wait until the next day and walk right in and buy one. The days of the "lines" were over after the 2G phone.. and all those people got were "bragging rights" and 2 days of their life they won't get back.

... unless there is some kinda party going on in those lines we don't know about.

Re: More lines...

Well I know with the iPhone 3G release they were "sold out" for at least a few weeks, at least where I got mine from and AT&T stores in the surrounding area. There was no party but I met some interesting people and get to bullshit for a few hours. I really doubt I'll get this new one anytime soon though. I thnk iPhone os 3 is were the meat and potatos are so I'll just stick with my 3G. If they change the form factor I definitely won't get one.

Re: More lines...

Well, if the new one does video and has the better processor and ability to get the 7mb speeds up to 20, then I'll definitely wait as I'm thinking about getting one.

My attitude is pretty simple at this point.. the Next Gen iPhone they're about to release will have everything I'll need for a long time.. so at that point, let them throw out the incremental hardware releases.. I'll stand back at that point.

Right now, I have the touch 2g and like it.. The next iPhone should have the best of all the features I'll ever care about for some time.

I paid nothing more then what my brother paid who got his almost 6 months later. There were some instences were currect AT&T customers weren't able to get the subsidized price. If I fall under that category this time around theres certainly no way in hell I'm getting one until I can get that price. I payed the same $199 as everyone else.

Dude, just go on eBay or craigslist and get an iPhone 2G for around $200-$250. Then jailbreak the thing like I did. I use my iPhone on T-mobile with no problems. My Blackberry data plan suits the iPhone just as well as it did my BB. Not to mention all the perks that come with having a jailbroken iPhone.
