Next iPhone Has Two-Way Video Chat
Hopefully AT&T's network is up for it
by Karl Bode Tuesday 25-May-2010 tags: business · hardware · alternatives · wireless
Tipsters confirm to Engadget that the next iPhone, widely expected to be unveiled on June 7, will feature two-way video chat. Actors are apparently being cast for the upcoming marketing campaign, and insiders confirm the ads will feature a mother and daughter chatting using the new front-facing camera seen on leaked iPhone prototypes. Two questions come to mind. One, can AT&T's freshly-revamped network handle the strain of both video chat and AT&T's plan to finally allow iPhone users to tether? Two, will people want to use the feature, given history has shown we humans tend to dislike displaying our bedhead -- but like the ability to lie about where we're calling from?

Video chat probably get light use

The younger users barely use their iPhones to actually TALK to each other. Mostly they just text like mad. I just don't see people who don't even want to talk to each other then using video chat instead. Texting will remain the main way the iPhone is used to communicate.

Negative. This will probably be free or at max $10.

Confused

The tipsters seem to have confirmed video chat or commercials that seem to verify it will exist, but nowhere in that article does it mention that video chat will be over the 3G network and not wi-fi only.

I would be shocked if any US Carrier could handle the influx of 1M devices hitting their network with video chat capability (not even VZWs map would save them)

Maybe if you live in NYC near the outdoor wi-fi AT&T is setting up...

Great point. Most likely it will be wifi only.

Also, will the video chat be limited to apple only chat clients (iChat or whatever) or will be it open to Skype and others?

Even if Skype mobile video calls were limited to WiFi, I think it would be great, as its relatively inexpensive.

It's a move to the future, but...

... We already have webcams on our computer and to this day they're mostly used for, um... "adult purposes" mostly... People also do use them to keep in touch with loved-ones over seas, stationed as well and the few people that actually send live video to grandma showing the new baby.

While I really doubt it will have a large adoption rate, it's still not bad that they're moving towards what everyone knows as "the future" anyway. Will this impact the 3G network? ... doubtfully. But I think AT&T knows that.. just like they know that tethering WOULD impact the network.

Either way, who cares.. If it's available and people use it, more power to them. If they don't, again, more power. But, having the option is nice, isn't it? Just the same can be said about what others feel about features that cable, satellite and phone offer people. Just becuase you may not use it doesn't mean others should - and it's not a democracy where a feature should or should not be made available on popular vote. To each is own.

Other than stating "two-way video chat is coming"... the added commentary from "the blogger" here is really just bating people into a discussion that's really a non-discussion in the first place.

"Video chatting" has been around for years... not really used... and the blogger knows it. Doubt anything will change with this.

Sprint will have it first in the HTC EVO

And I don't think it'll catch on much, especially if it requires both ends to have a compatible phone.

I tend to agree, but I also said this about the iPad, and they're selling those in droves....

Look, no matter what Jobs will sell sea container upon sea container of the Jezus phone to millions of adoring fans. It's inevitable.

Sometimes I think that guy could sell people cancer.

Let's see.

as much as i hate apple, jobs could sell a pile of horse shit as long as it had a shiny apple logo on the side. and its not necessarily because jobs is a good sales man, its because the fanboys 'must have' anything with the shiny apple logo or their pethetic existances wouldn't be justified.

There are no fanboys like Apple fanboys. Clearly you consider yourself one, which is why you will probably deny it. No other tech company has such a crazy following. Props to Apple for managing to do that; I won't buy their computers but I would buy their stock.

I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy, I do like there products but I also don't think they are always the best. Google is getting a very nice "fanboy" following do to Android. I have an Android phone since Verizon doesn't have the iphone. I like the Android OS and is very close to beating the iphone OS, in some case it does. I like competition, it makes us all winners. I use to hate Apple then I opened my mind and looked at them about 7 years ago and made the switch. For what I do Apple works best for me and that is what matters. I always tell people by whatever works best for you, I don't think that makes me a fanboy.

Re: Sprint will have it first in the HTC EVO

I would agree with those statements, actually. Googles fanbase is certainly growing, although their products are mostly free (so far) so that's not that unexpected. What gets me, is how the fanboys of Apple spend excessive amounts of money on their products, often simply because it is the new thing from Apple. How they managed to sell those crippled mp3 players without screens is insane to me. That product proved that people would buy anything from Apple.

Re: Sprint will have it first in the HTC EVO

You are talking about the ipod shuffle and at first I thought it was a dumb idea but when you think why most people buy them it makes sense, no I don't have one. The only people I know that buy them either run, walk or ride bikes. They are light weight, and hold up very well to shock and jolts. You simply load it with music and hit play. Not my thing but it fits that market which is pretty big.

What I don't understand is how Apple can be so smart and figuring out what the next big thing is and then choose to not open it up to other networks. By staying locked to ATT it has allowed Android to become very popular. But like I said competition is good for us all, so thanks to Apple being stubborn we are benefit.

oh_really

@uk.net

WOW!

So it'll have a feature that I've been able to do on countless phones since the UK got 3G in 2003?

(I can just see the press, particularly the ones sympathetic to Apple, wetting themselves for Apple "innovating" once again when it is something that has already been done before)

It was with any UK 3G network (replace with any European 3G network, if you like) and it wasn't entirely successful, due to the lack of 3G coverage back then, the sheer cost (the networks tried to claw back their multibillion licence fees by charging extortionate rates), and the gimmickiness of the whole thing.

The technology is and does work just fine - the coverage problem is solved, but our networks still charge far too much for it. That is the main reason I don't use it. If it was cheaper I might.

The idea that Apple doing it means success is really quite erroneous. Bear in mind also that outside of the US, Apple's marketshare is tiny.

I was wondering the same thing as my old Windows Mobile phone had this feature years ago (had 2 cameras, one of which was 'forward facing') and no doubt it will be marketed as an Apple innovation and patented as such (since the patent office is such a clueless bunch).

Yeah, I remember my cousin had a RAZR-like Motorla phone that had the two way video feature over 3G and that was about 5 or 6 years ago ... in Ireland - not the U.S. For what it was, it worked exactly how I expected it would. The video looked no better than a camera phone picture and the stream was a little choppy. Now, cameras on phones have improved since then but I still can't imagine this could work at say 30FPS+ at full resolution on a 3G network when we can barely get that over wired internet. Still, I'll take choppy video phone over no video phone.

would be fun for awhile

But not sure that it would catch on and get continued use. Especially if it requires IPhone to Iphone and not a 3rd party program that would support multiple platforms.

Cross brand compatability.

I know this would be a long shot but i wonder if it will work with outer manufactures phones, if att will even allow outer phone to use their video chat that is built in some of them, like the Nokia E72 for example.

I already use this feature just not on an iPhone

I have a Nokia E75 and use Fring to do 2 way video Skype calls on it. It works great on WiFi, or when AT&T's crummy network works good.

I'm All Alone

I rarely talk on my "phone" anymore. If there will be decent performance over 3G, I might actually use video conferencing, but most likely only to share what I was seeing with somebody, and not for a face-to-face call.

Re: I'm All Alone

First its not Jobs that sells the stuff, its Apple. Love 'em or hate'm Apple knows how to sell stuff and build hype. They are also great at making things work seamlessly with there other products which helps them sell. I think Google learned this also.

As for video chatting I don't see it taking off that much. My guess is they will make it work with Skype and iChat. They might even release a version of iChat for the PC, just what everyone wants another IM client to install. Or maybe they have teamed up with skype?
