NextWave Sells $150 Million of Wireless Spectrum T-Mobile is the big buyer NextWave Wireless announced in April that it would be selling off a big chunk of the AWS Spectrum that it has had (but not been using) for years. That sale has been completed, netting over $150 million for NextWave. The company kept one third of its spectrum, primarily in Florida and California, but plans to focus primarily on product development (including WiMax chipsets) using the money gained from the sale. There were four different buyers for this spectrum but the majority of it (almost $100 million worth) went to T-Mobile which plans to use it to assist them in their 3G launch in areas including Pittsburgh, Sacramento and New Orleans.

 | | And, of course, ISPs never got a chance to buy it. Another example of broadband providers being locked out of ever owning spectrum.... | |

| Re: And, of course, ISPs never got a chance to buy it. The ISPs that have the money to buy it do not bid on anything or offer to buy anything.
If the smaller ISPs wanted to buy anything they could. They'd need to team up together and pull all their money in to one pot.
It wouldn't be a bad idea. TM and ATT do it for their Cali market. | |

 | | Good Move I applaud the decision to sell off the part their not using. That frees it up for someone to put it to good use. And they made a tidy lil profit. | |
| | | | Re: Good Move Next Wave is under pressure to sell because they owe too much to the FCC.. didn't they default on spectrum that they got years ago and now are trying to sell ?? .. Sounds like an asset that was written off a couple of years ago..and now it's a profit? I think Nextwave paid more for the spectrum than what they sold it for...so goes it !! | |
