The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly melt. Batteries returned to Nikon under this recall will be replaced free of charge.
The Nikon EN-EL3 battery pack is provided as a supplied accessory with the purchase of Nikon's digital SLR D100, D70, and D50 cameras. It is also sold separately at retail under Nikon's model number 26265. The EN-EL3 battery pack involved in this recall was first distributed by Nikon in May 2004 and is still being sold at retail. Re: battery
I'd like to send mine in but since it's my only battery I doubt I will until I buy a spare. I've never seen the need for a spare since the silly thing lasts for weeks with my shooting style.
I didn't want to be without a battery so I opted for Nikons optional plan. If you provide them with a credit card number, they will send you a new battery. When it arrives, reuse the packaging to return the old battery. If you return the old battery within a few days, you will not be charged anything. They even provide you with the UPS label and a shipping bag. It took about four days for me to get my battery.
