Nintendo has announced they've signed on more than 200,000 users since the launch of their broadband gaming network. Accessible via home broadband connections and hotspot partners, the network aims to connect users of both the handheld DS, and their upcoming next-gen Revolution console. Speaking of the Revolution, Nintendo felt the need to issue some serious PR this in response to leaked data on the console, and suggestions it was under-powered.

Who cares?

Who cares about Nintendo anymore anyway?

Most gamers have grown out of their GC to Xbox 360 and the Sony stuff.

Re: Who cares?

I do. Nintendo (or whatever team they decide to license to) always manages to make a stunning game with their franchises that makes the console worthwhile. Metroid Prime 1 & 2 made the GC worth every dime I paid for it. The new Zelda is looking hot, too.

For some of us old-timers, now that Sega is pretty much gone all we have left to care about is Nintendo.

Besides, the last really "great" game I played was RE4 on the GC. Plus Nintendo makes some great games, I'm really looking forward to Twilight Princess.

Xbox 360 is just too expensive. $400 for a console and $60 a game is just too much. You're talking ~$500 just to play one game and there aint any games out there that I can see that are worth $500 to play. Maybe that will change in a year or so, but until then...

You are kidding right? I'm definately upgrading from my cube to the revolution, when it comes out. Screw the Xbox 360 and PS3, I have a computer for the things available on those same-old same-old systems.

Nintendo has the largest share of the handheld game market. The various incarnations of the GameBoy have sold millions and Nintendo has the best games on those systems. Sony's PSP sure does look and play great, but the price point will keep it from overtaking Nintendo for years to come. The GameCube might be number in the market, but that in no way counts Nintendo out.

But can you imagine how many late-adopters are going to be picking up a Gamecube once the new zelda comes out? I think with that Nintendo will be able to overtake the at least the xbox in consumer presence.

200,000 indivdual users? i doubt it. more likely that is how many times their servers have been accessed by nintendo customers. in other words their numbers of customers is likely 20,000... pffftt.

if Nintendo thinks their customers have their product for anything online, then they are fooling themselves...if they were serious, they would have had it available 2yrs ago. Real/serious online gamers own XBOX or PC.

Serious PR?

quote:
Finally, playing games with high definition graphics requires a system with loads of RAM and costly high-end graphics chips, both of which make it prohibitively expensive for most consumers.
Translation: The revolution will have a small amount of RAM and a mediocre graphics chip.

And I'm disgusted by their comments about high costs of developing high definition games. Game makers have been designing multi-resolution PC games for decades. When everything is 3D-rendered, scaling is not a big issue.

Re: Serious PR?

You don't need a sweet graphics card to make an awesome game, there are some games that had only mediocre graphics but are considered the best games of all time. Most people think FF7 is better then any of the current FF games, and they have kick @$$ graphics, Why Count nintendo out just cuz you can't see your pimples in the reflection? Sides, Resident Evil LOOKED SWEET on the rebuilt egine for GC so you know that Its gonna at least be sweet for the REV.

As far as The other guys comments about the 360, yeah they really made perfect dark better. NOT. Perfect dark for n64 still kicks its ass. I ownj all 3 systems GC still has the most replay value for its games. Metroid Zelda and Such

FF7 only looks mediocre by today's graphical standards. It was considered pretty amazing back in its day! The gameplay and the story have stood the test of time.

PC is different. On a console, there is a standard resolution that you MUST follow if you wish to compete with other console games. You don't create a game that is 480P and upscale it to 720P. It won't look as nice and your product won't be as competitive.

Take the DS for example. There are probably twice as many games released on the DS than on the PSP. And the software lineup for the DS is much better than the PSP's. With the DS, developers don't have to worry about the budget or whatever because it doesn't take a lot of money to innovate.

Most Xbox 360 games cost $60. Smaller developers are disappearing because they just don't have the money to compete with EA or UBI or other giant developers/publishers. And we all know that small developers innovate more than giant developers. Monopolies such as EA play it safe. EA's upcoming lineup is 98% sequels. Would you like a gaming industry like that? Would you? Do you want to play the same games over and over again with better graphics, sound, and little bit of new gameplay?

New and innovative games are rare in this generation(PS2, Xbox, GCN). Imagine the next generation. Companies don't have the financial security to innovate. You'll just get your same Madden every year.

It's really sad that the gaming industry is moving toward that fate. If Nintendo is out, I think the industry would collapse.

It's not upscaling when something is rendered at a higher resolution. If I design a 3D model of Mario, that vector model can be rendered at any resolution.

Textures. A game designed for 480P will not look as good as a game designed for 720P.

How are you to blame EA for that? What sequels has EA made that are basically the same exact game. You can't count sports games in there, becuase the roster changes, and most of the time, they add in a bunch of new features.

as for your "same game" bullshit, take a look at the mario party games, you nintendo-fanboy. How many mario party's are there? Six now? I don't even know. They all look exactly the same. Mario? The mario on gamecube today looks dead on the mario for nintendo 64.

I am not blaming EA. Face it dude. In fact, besides movie tittles EA create, 100% of their upcoming games are sequels. 100% dude. New features? Without competition from Sega and 2k Games, the new Madden for Xbox 360 is fucking shit. What new features? Besides better graphics....

I am no Nintendo fanboy. I own all three consoles and I just got a highend computer that I built. Mario and Zelda games are legendary franchises. Flops of players want sequels.

Tell me how Mario 64 is the same as Super Mario Sunshine? Tell me how Ocarina of Time is the same as Wind Waker. Nintendo does make a lot of sequels but they also create many new fun games. The most recent is Nintendogs.

If you want to play the same games again, fine. If you don't care that small developers are disappearing, fine. But you cannot bash me because you don't like Nintendo.

Nintendo Wifi

200,000 is pretty good for only one major game on a handheld. However, I'll bet $$ to donuts that as Animal Crossing matures and Metriod hits next year, the Nintendo's wireless users will increase dramatically.

Nintendo's wireless is very well done. It's transparent, easy enough for a child to set up and best of all, free.

I wonder...

I haven't owned a console since the late 80's and early 90's when I had a Nintendo ('NES').

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc.... they were all awesome games. I'm not one for the complicated games these days with 20 buttons and 500 moves.

That being said, do you think that I would like the newest versions of the three aforementioned games? .. or should I just bid on a NES on eBay and forget the newer consoles?

Seems to be alot of market speak for saying that they are basically not going to pack alot of RAM and are you going to not use that powerful a graphics chip.

Considering that any machine is best when it gets the support of many third parties, and since the other two consoles are headed into HD labd, wont the games already be made for HD?? Plus, since when is Nintendo substantially cheaper than its competitors, except when their sales are down or they are cutting costs in like with competitors? PS2 sold more, AND cost more than Nintendo.

Why cant they just do BOTH?? Innovation and massive HP? Make it cost the same as the other consoles...we already know from the 360, that cost NEVER stops adament gamers, and if the kid wants a Nintendo, he/she will get a Nintendo no matter the cost >P

I have been with Nintendo since the beginning, got all the consoles (even Virtual Boy) (Anyone remember Game and Watch? or the Nintendo Disc system used in Japan? oooold school), and their vapid selection of third party games is sickening me. Of course stellar 1st party will help this gap, but not rehashed sequels over and over.

Nostalgia may be a near unlimited bank account...but its also subject to inflation. Use it too much, it becomes worth less...

Problem for XBOX and PSP3

Nintendo is far cheaper to buy at $99 and has a cult following. Personally, I think eventually XBOX better start generating positve news AND profits. Playstation and Nintendo makes money. XBOX makes money only on licensing (if it does--Microsoft won't reveal numbers). XBOX has the right idea about technology, but like Windows, fails to execute and bring a quality product EVERY time causing update after update and update (or patch after patch after patch to fix the stupid software that should've been tested in the first place).

Nintendo is perfectly happy dominating the kiddie market and Playstation already dominates the adult market.

The problem with all of them: lack of games. Personally, I don't have oodles of time to devote to learning every stupid thing or nuance about a game. I want to plug-n-play and not have to spend stupendous amounts of time trying to figure everything out. I don't mind a challenge, just not a 30 hour challenge. I want to escape for a few hours now and then and not have to constantly think.

My 2 cent$: Virtual Reality is the next step. When VR becomes available, say goodbye to all 3 of them. Wouldn't you like to BE the character not just play it? VR is where the money is at in the future. Some already exists. Of course, once moved past porn, then the fun begins.

innovation

all the other companies these day are all about having the newest hardware and best graphics but then just recycle these tired old games with slightly better graphics.

Nintendo is where it's at as far as innovation goes. their games have always been the most fun, and that's what is really important in a game.

i have a top of the line PC and a bunch of good games like half life 2, doom 3 and other hot games but you know what i play on it the most? my NES, SNES, N64, and arcade emulators. can can get lost in those games forever. the PS1 emulator gets some good time also, and flash games on www.addictinggames.com

bottom line for me is function before form, a game has to be really fun and have a lot of replay value before you worry about making the graphics better.

MarioKart DS is amazing!

Nintendo has set the bar very high with MarioKart DS! I encourage everyone to borrow a friends copy and see just how fun this is. Kart over WiFi is amazingly easy, fun, and there are no loading times and very few if any networking issues. All it takes is an open WiFi node, and you can get online and play with four players with minimal hassle.

I don't know about you, but configuring networks and buying $50-60 enet/wifi adaptors or running additional enet cabling to my xbox/360 simply isn't a fun preliminary to playing a game.

Nintendo has made internet gaming dead simple and the other consoles are going to have their work cut out to match this simplicity.

I'm going to buy my girlfriend a DS for Christmas as this is just too cool!

Nintendo dominates the kiddie market? Please.

I never see kids with a Nintendo DS or a GameCube - they all have a PlayStation 2 or an Xbox.

You know who I see with Nintendo systems? Adults. Mature adults play Nintendo systems. Immature children go out and buy a PS2 and 50 Cent's game.

Performance over sells

People want speed, people want performance, people want more than necessity.

Sure the Revolution may have very popular games on it, but they are not going to be as successful as Halo. I don't own an XBox, but I hear people talk about them and their 360 all the time. They all ogle over the graphics. They buy for the performance. I know these people own some Nintendo before now too, but they play Halo, so they will play what ever that is on.

And, from what I heard, Halo is also going to be on the PS3, which is going to destroy Nintendo.

Did people forget about the bill passed that requires all signals to be HD before the end of 2009? By then most people are going to have HD sets. People are going to want to have console that is USING the TV as it supposed to be used.

The Revolution NEEDS to have the performance, they are going down a very risky road, sure they will be bought, but not with anything near the success Microsoft or Sony will have.

Plus that controller is the crappiest thing I have ever seen.

I bought ps...

and I did and ps2 when it first came out...and I had my sorta fun with them..hate xbox period.

Anyway, ps2 for the last 2 years or more can't really say for how long actually. But I have only bought or bought mostly used 20 games(for ps2) because all the games have really sucked imho for many several reasons and most of it is because they DON'T DO ANYTHING NEW or bring anything to the table and its plain old.I hate sports, serious race/driving, 99% of all war games and retarded violence.

As for the ds and GC I did not buy GC system but that cause 300 of it went to ps2 and I don't believe in owning more than 1 system to myself and your a glutinous whore if you do. So I play the gc and ds cause my g/f is teh shit and has them.

I won't ever go back and as for the next upcoming Revolution has my vote JUST because Nintendo is outstanding and are bringing something new to the table and that's goin to scare alot of ppl cause they just want their gore system and nothing to change except how much better it looks to shoot someones head off like some kinda roman.

Why do I say that? lets see GTA where u go around being a black hole of a person doing crap. what system? ps2 and xbox..and imho is a nice representation of 87% of the mindless bs that I see for those systems.

GC Resident evil series and that's about it and its mostly scary not mindless. So with all that in mind and of coarse just my opinion is why Revolution has my vote and they will do great things so eat it. Also if I want blazing retarded gfx I just go to my pc cause its not a console so I can spend whatever I want on it.

Maybe...

Maybe on this one, I won't have to blow into the slot to get it working each time. =S

Also, we bought my son a new slim version of the PS2 for Christmas last year. Since then, we've had to replace it TWICE for the same problem (it loads to the configuration menu upon turning on or resetting w/ a clicking noise within the drive). And, it just did the same thing last week (just a week out of warranty). They obviously have a problem with it, and we'll never know. Fact is, with this experience and the fact of Sony's little DRM trick... this household will never buy another PS, period.

XBOX, I agree! WAY over-priced and COMPLETELY over-hyped! People are always bitching about Microsoft and their products, yet they're lining up to brag about owning one of these and standing by it? What gives? My brothers both have one of the older ones, and I personally didn't see the big who-ra-ra with it!

Nintendo though... if it's more affordable, and is as slick as it appears in that link with decent specs, I'll choose that as my gaming console! (Also depends on the copy-protection system they use... as I'm a big believer that backups are grace, especially in CD/DVD-styled games). After all, it's main purpose is game playing, right? If I spent $500+ on a gaming system... it better come with hardware to do my dishes as well!

Re: Maybe...

Totally OT but just had to comment on the exorbitant amount of TX posters on here. As mentioned in another thread, maybe TX is the broadband mecca of the U.S.

To steer it back slightly on topic, Sega was the first console to incorporate networking, with the inclusion of a dial-up modem in the Dreamcast itself and NIC add-on that never really took off. Phantasy Star Online was all the rage at one time...poor Sega, buried by their own mistakes.

HD in gaming makes me laugh.. Sure when you have it hooked up it may look great, but then again you should consider this. Studies have shown that something like 75% of people who own an HD TV don’t even have the HD connection hooked up...and are still using the old RCA or even the Coaxial cable. I can say I agree with this because I was a satellite dish installer for Direct TV. Every time I got called out to a place for a problem, I saw that every person that had an HD TV had it hooked up using old connectors that were not utilizing the HD technology. When I told the customers they should upgrade their cabling to get the best picture, most of them replied “well it works and looks good as it is, so no thanks”

So like I said, HD has a beautiful picture, but most don’t even know if they are using it or not and a lot of them don’t even care. So if the parents don’t care, most likely the game systems are not going to get hooked up HD anyways.

I’m happy to see lower priced games from Nintendo along with great games. Maybe on the system they put out after the Revolution they should go HD, because by then HD will be more widely used. Right now though, it’s just not needed.
