After it gets done spewing porn and changing the Internet...
(old news - 01:26PM Friday Apr 13 2007)
tags: business · hardware · gaming · content
A few months ago, the fact that you could connect the Nintendo Wii to your Wi-Fi router and use it to browse the Internet terrified parents, thanks in part to sensationalist news reports portraying the happy device as a bastion of smut. A new Merrill Lynch report suggests that 30% of U.S. homes will have a Wii by 2011, leading some to wonder if the device is going to somehow change the very nature of the Internet. Why there must be a head rattling paradigm shift every time we connect another device to our home broadband networks isn't made clear, but the Wii's Opera functionality did leave beta this week.

I want one..

I have still yet to get one, I tell myself I should, but can never seem to get around to it (or find one for that matter I guess). They look like a fun toy with a lot of great functionality. I was in line at Wal-Mart the other day waiting to check out and they came over the loud speaker saying they just got 4 in stock, first 4 to the electronics department could get there hands on it. I was so close to doing it, but once you cross the video game playing line, its tough to come back.

I've only seen one once and that was at Toys R' Us. At the time, buying it would have been met with my wife putting my jewels in a jar with formaldehyde. As much as it hurt to pass it up, I passed. I have never seen one for sale except that.

Re: I want one..

Interesting.... My wife has offered to buy me one as an incentive to get a certain procedure done which will ensure that we don't have any more children. (Our second is due in less than a month.) A "Wii for a wee" so to speak.

(And no, she's not joking! )

I think once you get hooked into video games, that WOULD be the procedure, although, the Wii procedure could work to well and you will be drawn to move back into your parents basement and develop an 18 hour per day playing habit with a 6 hour sleep regimen.

It will just add

I doubt the wii can CHANGE the Internet and how we used. I can see it as an added value like the MCE and the MCE Plugins. Though Wii might be more effective for now.

True...

How many times over the years have we heard things like:
"It will change the way you use the internet."
or
"The internet will never be the same."

Seems like everyone wants to create their own news, and what better way to do it than to say how your device is going to revolutionize the industry or the internet. I seem to recall the same marketing style with the 3D0... 'nuf said.

Yeah but if you think about the "true" implications of the Wii-mote and internet pr0n...it REALLY could change the way people use pr0n on the internet.

excuse me....

By 2011 the Wii will be a thing of the past, along with the 360 and PS3 and there will be other consoles. PC wins as usual.

Re: excuse me....

The PS3 will probably get at most an aesthetic makeover and a slight power push for the PS4 when MS releases the next xbox.

Computer advances aren't exactly causing obsolesence like it used to. Hell, few people see a need to change to Vista or 64bit processing.

only cause Vista seems to suck. but seriously, consoles are obsolete a week or less after release. my computer right now can best any console with half its power tied behind its back.

I love vista but I seem to be one of the lucky ones with zero issues. I agree though, PCs will always have the upper hand in gaming. Consoles are good for what they do but a good PC will thrash a console any day. When I see a console thats able to run Supreme Commander then I may start to think differently but probably not.

Re: excuse me....

I have a Wii and I love it. Its hours of entertainment, not just a few minutes. I tend to play it when friends are over. Most people prefer that over the PS2 or the 360. Its a hellouva party favor and its about the only video games I can get my wife to play.

thats never been a reason NOT to get a system. Don't install ish, no compatability issues, everyones using the same rig.

Your PC is very different then mine. But your Playstation or w.e. the hell is the same as my Playstation or w.e. the hell...

Exactly. I'm sure there will still be Wii's around in 2011 just as there still original Playstations in use now, but to suggest that 30% of households will have them or that they'll rely on them for their primary source of Internet is absurd.

Heck, I still have an original NES and an Atari 2600 that both work (in addition to an original PS), although they don't get very much play these days. It's all about the PS2 and Wii in my house...

I've always been a console person -- I've never gotten into PC games beyond SimCity/Sims type stuff -- and my roommate is the same way.

So, can you get porn?

I havent even bothered to connect my Wii to my router. If I can get porn on it tho, I think I will. My laptop screen is too small to get the good smutty views a large screen would provide.

Why always a "paradigm shift"?

Because of writers. Writers, by and large, ordain something a paradigm shift. If they do so and it sticks, they become a "Tech Visionary" and get to be "Very Important Voices".

I used to see this same kind of stuff in the music business, with rock writers: They would write articles of great analysis, ascribing the mantles of Byron, Shelly and Keats to bands that were the biggest piles of kak on the planet?

Why?

Because if, by luck of the draw, that band became huge, the would be called a visionary.

Wii browser is nice BUT

First of all PARENTS ARE responsible for what their kids access on the Internet and it's OUR job to monitor what they are looking at! If you don't want that stuff getting through block it, or better yet TAKE AN INTEREST IN YOUR KIDS and their activities, that seems to be the better way to prevent such things from happening.

The Wii browser is nice and it's great to have the ability to browse on the TV. However, I don't really think it's going to revolutionize the net... The browser doesn't really connect to the Internet, it connects to the "internet" through a Nintendo server. Just try punching in your router IP into the browser, see what happens. Not going to revolutionize anything that way!

I see much more potential for people who home school, and for home work help. There are a ton of sites out there with educational materials galore. Being able to access that on your TV with a device that is cheaper than any decent PC is definitely an advantage. I know my kids like being able to explore them through the Wii and with a 65" TV much easier to see than a laptop screen.

Incorrect -- the Internet Channel browser makes direct connections just like a PC does. (I can hit sites on my LAN which are on RFC 1918 IPs and are not publicly accessible from my Wii, and WhatIsMyIP/etc. report my IP as my usual public IP...)

As a Wii owner...

Did you guys know that the Wii has parental controls which can prevent or allow videos games from playing.

Also Wii uses the Opera Browser, which needless to say does not come pre-installed, you have the choice of downloading it to your console.

Out of all friends I'm the only one who owns a Wii, and all of them who have played it, now want to go out and buy one. The wii is the first game console ever to make me sweat while playing a game. I've seen 360s & PS3s at Walmart collecting dust, you can't even find a Wii anywhere (except on ebay).

Wii and the Internet

I'm sure that the Wii will be in many, many Americans' homes. I'm even seriously thinking about getting one after trying out the Wii that a co-worker brought in one day. That would make it the first console that I've owned since the original Nintendo Entertainment System (and that one was bought for me by my parents). The Wii seems to appeal to both gamers and non-gamers alike and that's why it's hard to find one. Nintendo tapped a huge, previously untapped source of demand and just can't keep up.

That said, I'd wager that many of those Wii consoles will be used to play Wii Sports. Many more will add less than 3 more games to the lineup. I doubt that many non-gamers will even connect their Wii to the Internet.

At most, the only thing that the Wii will do to change the Internet is bump up Opera's market share. You might see web developers like myself testing in IE, FireFox and Opera instead of just IE and FireFox. Other than that, though, I don't think that there will be any huge change.

Well

I have a 360 and the Wii is pretty sweet seeing I have tried it out at my friend's house. With that being said I think the only time I would take advantage of a Wii is when I have a bunch of friends over. Other than that, 360 and PS3 blow the Wii away.

Ohh pahleeease

Sure i can see the whole web reverting back to 640x480 and/or 320x200. Other than a few specialty sites for mobiles where does one surf at such resolutions? Heck, most of the web is a pain on this old box stuck at 800x600 when 90% of the sites assume 1024 and up. When it works it usually puts a little narrow article surrounded by ads, i guess it could fit if you eliminate that little narrow article in the middle.....

Besides, as someone said isn't 2011 about time for new box again that will revolutionize the web......although true of course if the current one revolutionizes it back to 640x480 first

Im writing this...

From my wii. The browser is displayed at 1024. With the newer zoom controls you can zoom in and out to resize to whatever size you need. Also with the auto-complete typing in easy. However I don't see a shift because of this due to zooming and how it's a full featured web browser.

Is it just me or did they get rid of the auto-complete typing with this new browser release? It doesn't seem to be there anymore, unless I'm missing an option to turn it on.

1024? The Wii can only output 480p at best. 720x480 widescreen is still pretty crappy on my 1080p set.
