Nintendo has joined forces with McDonalds to offer Nintendo DS users free wireless service at the fast food giant's stores. Access is being provided by Wayport, which will receive an "undisclosed sum" from Nintendo. The move is part of a larger effort to connect DS and the upcoming Revolution users to a Nintendo run broadband gaming network (set to go live November 14), something they failed at with their last console release.

Wow. This is Huge.

Does the DS have a web browser? Do we have to use a DS?

McDonalds already has WiFi hotspots available for use in most of its locations: »www.mcdwireless.com. $3 gets you two hours access according to their site. (free in Katrina-affected zones)

I imagine it would be difficult enough to use a laptop touchpad with french-fry greasy fingers...wonder what using that DS stylus would be like.

Re: Wow. This is Huge.

I think this is a good step for Nintendo. The sad part is McD's may get flack when all those fat teens are hanging out there. Then they will have to put in a DDR game to give them some kind of workout. LOL

Re: Wow. This is Huge.

Not everybody has a need for a wireless router in their house. And besides, this is for outside the house, not inside.

Gotta give points

Gotta give points to Nintendo for really trying to give their online service a strong push...because I admit that I expected them to be halfhearted in this attempt.

Original Props goto M$ though for showing Nintendo what they were missing out on by having Live up and ready to go at the launch of xbox.

Edit: This means that I'll have more places to play Mario Kart DS online ^_^

"Live up and ready to go at the launch of xbox."

Xbox Live was not launched when the Xbox was launched. You used to have to use software to spoof through your PC to get online.

Re: Gotta give points

No you didnt.

There has never been pc software to access XBL.

XBL is XBOX ONLY. NO PC.

Re: Gotta give points

Yes I did.

And I did not say connect my PC to Xbox Live. I clearly stated you would "SPOOF THROUGH YOUR PC" using software That is the way we were connecting before Xbox Live existed.

The main point of the post is that Xbox Live did not launch at the same time as the Xbox.

Does Nintendo still use WEP

If so, you will not need to step inside a McD's. Since it only takes 3 minutes to crack WEP, you get access tot eh network before the person on line in McD's gets his/her gruel (err food)...

The McD networks are open, but use a captive portal.

Article is biased...

"The move is part of a larger effort to connect DS and the upcoming Revolution users to a Nintendo run broadband gaming network (set to go live November 14), something they failed at with their last console release."
Wrong. They never attempted any kind of online service for their GameCube, but they gave the option to other companies to attempt one. Sega was the only one in the US to take advantage of the GameCube's online capabilities.

As discussed yesterday

The DS does not have WPA.

Does that mean that all McDonalds will have vulnerable wireless networks setup?

I am talking about the McDonalds network not the stupid DS.

Think a little bigger than a handheld gaming device.

And yes, it freaking matters.

Re: As discussed yesterday

The you follow the common sense rule: If its something sensitive that you don't want anyone else to see, then.....DON'T USE A PUBLIC UNSECURE NETWORK TO VIEW IT!

Public free hotspots don't need to support encryption.

Good idea.

I personally think this is a good idea. It's an excellent way to roll out a network, with the nations most popular food place.
