No, The Internet Doesn't End In 2012
After promising sex for neutrality support, Belgian activist gets more attention
by Karl Bode 11:44AM Thursday Jun 12 2008 Tipped by robertfl See Profile
I've had roughly a dozen people submit this report (slow to load) that claims Canadian phone companies Telus and Bell Canada are planning to start charging customers extra to access certain websites by 2012. Given Telus's previous history of blocking their customers from accessing websites Telus didn't agree with, and the fact their wireless service already essentially does this, it almost sounds plausible. However, despite making the front page of both digg (11,000 diggs at last count) and Reddit, I've seen nothing to substantiate any of the claims made by the report. In the report's own words:
quote:
Click for full size
Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These 'other' sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet.
The article claims that someone named Dylan Pattyn was working on fleshing out this story for Time. I tracked down and called the 26-year-old Pattyn, who says he is submitting an amateur piece to Time based on claims he's received from employees within Telus, who insist the company is exploring per-website fees. However, no employee has gone on the record, and he wasn't able to provide me documentation. Not exactly substantive.

I've tried to reach both Telus and Bell Canada for comment, but have yet to hear back.

I did recognize the woman in the accompanying video as Tanya Devereaux, the same Belgian "Internet activist" who promised to have sex with any virgins who would support network neutrality. Devereaux last year failed to grab a seat in the Belgian Senate despite hinting she'd give voters oral sex. It appears she's engaging in a bit of viral net neutrality warfare. Or she's spamming whatever the hell this is.

If the claim is a viral hoax I suppose it's only fair play, considering the companies opposed to network neutrality aren't any more honest.

I agree...

Its time to cut the middle man out and decentralize the net. Day after day you hear about all these things that ISPs do like blocking, censorship, can't to this can't do that give us more money and so on. The fact that we as customers made the company's, its time to break the company's. Maybe then they will say "hey wait a minute! what are we doing wrong?" *lol* I know this is no easy task, but with technology getting better and cheaper it is at least a thought. Something like linking home PC to PC to PC. Now I realize there are ALL kinds of issue with this, but it really is getting time to cut out the middle man.

Video arcades are dead. Dedicated movie stores don't exist anymore, and for that matter, neither do adult book stores.

But the indegenous people of the America's had it before ever knowing about the Gregorian, so their date is still valid. Plus they were smarter.

Verizon didn't own TELUS ...

Verizon owned a percentage of BCtel, which merged with TELUS in 1999. They did not have a substantial majority of the shares (73.5 million shares in total).

It may be a hoax, but will come true if not stopped

Maybe the writer can't prove it because it's a hoax. Or maybe it's true even if the writer can't get proof. If it's really a plan, the telcos/cablecos are probably trying to cover it up as fast as they can now that it's leaked.

But it doesn't really matter whether it's literally a plan with a schedule. It is a possible and plausible future scenario. And it would be exactly in line with the interests and profit motives of the big ISPs.

In fact it is the direction things are already going. If the anti-neutrality forces win, a corporate-controlled, admission-controlled, fee-for-everything internet where there is no reliable, independent or free-flowing information is what we'll end up with.

Re: It may be a hoax, but will come true if not stopped

This would be basically committing suicide for ISPs, if you were only able to access websites with your internet connection, I bet somewhere around 90% of people would stop using it. No more gaming and etc. In fact someone else would probably start a new internet. Tough.

Re: It may be a hoax, but will come true if not stopped

In some places where you only have limited access to some providers, this could very well be the result. So it wouldn't be suicide for some isp's but an end reality to get the best bang for their buck.

Thread has been Godwined. All further comments are not here, Chronoss2008 loses the thread.

But seriously this is total crap, and I can't believe that any ISP would be stupid enough to do this.

Less ranting more cohesive thought. ISP are not national leaders, however they do have large pull on what information can be gained. With that, comes a level of personal responsibility that the average citizen has to take on their own.

Somebody is a moron

Since when has Telus been owned by Verizon?
Telus was formed by the merger of BC telephone company and AGT (Albert Goverment Telephone).

Cell service came by the acquisition of Clearnet.

Not to mention we have laws against foreign ownership of our media companies.

More internet blocking in Canada, than you think

Something called 'The Great Firewall of Canada' does exist.

So many sites in the States are blocked in Canada, or re-routed to the Canadian site..This has to do with greedy TV networks in Canada that think it's legal to do this, because they own the Television rights to whatever material they censor.

The internet is supposed to be free, yet in Canada, the population is either too dumb to notice or will not fight the crap that goes on..

'Freedom of Communication' is a right and not to be removed, so that some scum bags can make billions by censoring others.

Explain to me the difference between televised content and internet websites, how said companies implement television content broadcast rights to something like a wiki entry and the re-route idea is common in any country. Do a toplevel domain search in the UK, China etc. Same thing.

We've got a whole different set of legal irritants to deal with. Resisting U.S buyouts of our country being one of them, or so the joke goes.

So long as it meets corporate approved guidelines free speech is entirely up to the corporate citizen. And the "scumbags" have been doing the same thing since the advent of the net. Merchandising and media blanket marketting baby. Pretty soon ads will be everywhere you are..oh wait, they are already.
