Nordstrom Stops Tracking User Cellphone Location
Just As Press Notices Phone Tracking Trial
A local Dallas Fort Worth CBS Affiliate this week reported (via Consumerist) that Nordstrom has been testing technology from Euclid that allows them to track customer locations at 17 of the company's stores around the country using their cell phones. Nordstrom was hoping to use this data to track store foot traffic, but the public attention apparently made them nervous -- given the day after the CBS story aired, Nordstrom cancelled the plans. The company insisted to CBS in a follow up statement that the timing of the plan's cancellation was just a coincidence:
quote:
“We’d been testing Euclid since September and have said all along this was a test for us. We had been discussing what made sense in terms of concluding the test; after 8 months we’d felt like we had learned a lot and determined that it was the right time to end it," said (Nordstrom spokesperson Tara Darrow) in an email.
Nordstrom insisted that no personally identifiable information was obtained during the trial, though a study recently found that this data isn't as anonymous as companies like to pretend. Granted this isn't much of a "win" for privacy-conscious consumers, since malls have been tracking user location since at least 2011, and all wireless carriers track and sell your location data to everyone from marketers and governments to city planners and stadium owners. Still, it's nice that some users and news outlets discovered this is happening, even if it's several years after the fact.

mac spoofing

And this is why Wifi MAC spoofing is very important and should not be banned in wifi drivers.

Listens for broadcasted wifi packets from your smart phone. It does not sniff the cell network which is what I thought it did superficially.

I suppose it would depend on your phone being set up to connect to any available access point. I reall can't see what the fuss is about if it can't pull any real data from your phone.

Tracking

How many companies and agencies do you think are doing this now that we don't know about ?

Nordstrom discontinues cellphone tracking

Color me extremely skeptical of Nordstrom canceling tracking just as the CBS story aired.

The more the public learns of personal privacy intrusions, the more we will see similar corporate actions.

And thats why they have rewards cards and store credit cards. Easier to track and see what you buy.

And that is why you give misleading information when filling them out. Its not like they ask for proof of ID outside of store sponsored credit cards.

hmm...

Glad I don't shop there anymore. I'm already invisible to them - I wear L.L. Bean cargos, and an L.L. Bean Chamois shirt, and apparently their sales people are trained to ignore anyone wearing that. Apparently their sales people are trained to recognize only the "right" sort of person to assist. I'm sure their security people and cameras watch me though. I don't really care; there's nothing in their stores I'm that interested in anyway.

fear mongering

I don't actually care if they track where I walk through the store. It wouldn't be a horrible thing if they send me targeted deals. At least I'm getting bothered about something I looked at and showed interest.

Re: fear mongering

Yeah I don't understand what the big deal is. Some people are just overly paranoid and goofy. They can just as easily watch you on the cameras. If you have an issue with someone knowing where you are then don't have a cell phone or turn it or at least the wifi off. Someone walked from shoes to ties - oh noes!

Exactly but don't say that too loud or you'll be called everything under the sun including unamerican like I was a few weeks ago.

I doubt the issue is this clear

Obviously if you INTEND to do business with an organization your are comfortable with them having some of your 'private' information. That makes sense.

It's the other things they do with the information that people take issue with. What gives them the right to profit off you private data with a company that you may want nothing to do with, and shouldn't YOU be the beneficiary of any income generate from the use of YOUR data? Basically I consider this fraud and theft for personal gain, and should be a felony.
